Had a lot of 1-1 time with LaFluer on his visit and thinks LaFluer and ND like him a lot. It would be tough for him to turn ND down.

Brownsburg HS is in Brownsburg. Avon is just south of Brownsburg. Both are on the west side of Indy.

I get why they are offering freshmen and sophomores, but just another example of the decline of youth and fun in sports.

I totally agree with you on that. We don't allow these kids to have the fun they desire out of our athletics. BUT look at those measurables already....

Dude just finished his freshman year. Stahp.

Lionel Messi signed a professional club contract with Barcelona at 12 years old and moved from Argentina to Spain to train.

The Bruins courted Bobby Orr for over a year before owning his rights as a 14 year old.

Olympic gymnasts like Gabby Douglas make their national debuts as early teens and compete as worldwide superstars at the Games at 16 or 17 years old.

I always chuckle when this subject is brought up. It's really not a big deal that rising high school sophomores are visiting campus with some of them being offered meaningless verbal scholarships. What's the big deal?

I agree. My daughter is a soccer goalkeeper and plays for a soccer club in TX. We gave up rec soccer 4 years ago. She is only 11 years old but goalkeepers are in high demand and great ones even more so. She will be targeted in another couple of years and though it will be stressful at times, I think it would be even more so if she wasn't getting that attention. Especially at her position where colleges like to snag the great keepers as early as possible. She has more stress because of the position she plays and knowing her peers are as die hard about winning and being the best as she is but she is genuinely having the time of her life. If it stops being fun and only about winning then she won't play anymore. I won't let her childhood become nothing but stress and worry and anxiety. If she is having a blast then some stress is worth it.

Raised five, been there done that, see it all the time. Parents are at the root of it. They stop letting their kids play several sports and focus on one in hopes of landing a scholarship and maybe even a pro contract. Most of the time they can't tell the difference between a very good player and a great player. Then add the club coaches who want to use the kids for their own benefit and will drop one kid from the team for a better one at the drop of a hat. Kids are afraid at times to speak the truth for fear of disappointing the parents. I have a granddaughter who plays bball and will be a sophomore this fall. She plays ball year round and started getting letters last year. She decided to try volleyball and is even better at it then she is at bball. Coaches are always griping because she misses one event for another. I'm much happier now that sh'e playing two sports so she gets a really good perspective and has a real decision to make instead of being funneled down one pipe. Not saying you're one of them, but that's where the vast majority of this falls IMO.

I had a longer reply since this is a recruit's thread I will keep it short. We just make sure she is having fun and wants to play. She chooses to only play soccer and we are here to support her dreams. When the parents forget they are no longer the kids and it's not their choice, that is when there is a problem IMO. If the kids have their goals and dreams and they choose to work hard to get there then I don't see any problem with that.

Any idea what he thought? I wonder if he was downtown early to take in the activities? It was packed, so if he saw that he had to be impressed by the following.

Nothing really that cool

“I talked to Coach LaFleur about a week before the game and told him I was planning on coming to that game,” recalled Johnson. “He said that was good. He just wants me to come to a home game at some point so we can actually talk to each other again and see each other.”
Johnson is still planning to get back to South Bend for the Irish’s game against Northwestern in November. Johnson’s brother is a redshirt freshman linebacker for the Wildcats. This weekend, he plans to see the Boilermakers in action again this weekend, when they host Southern Illinois.
