Nothing like a good conspiracy theory to go along with this fall's new line of tinfoil hats.

It's a strange claim, but it's not the first person I've seen saying that Wisconsin threw the game. I don't believe it though.

I have a Question maybe so of you guys that are really in the know might be able to help with.

With the playoff system in effect do the winning teams get pay outs from both bowl games?

So what if we had an 8 team?

#1 Bama vs. #8 Michigan State... Bama much better suited to defend MSU... Bama probably wins a close one.
#2 Florida State vs. #7 Mississippi State... probably a very close game, FSU gets lucky to dodge TCU
#3 Oregon vs. #6 TCU... two best offenses in the same game. Onions.
#4 Ohio State vs. #5 Baylor... I don't know what happens in this one either, two teams with great spread offenses.

It's very possible you get the same 4 we had after playing those games. Without a doubt, this year was so much better than hypothetical Alabama vs. FSU.

Wouldn't it be #2 Oregon vs. #7 Miss State and #3 FSU vs. #6 TCU?

Regardless, it's only a matter of time. I can't wait.

After these games I prefer 4 teams. 8 teams would be too much, for me. Do we need to see crappy teams like Mississippi State in this? 8 teams would just give ESPN a better chance to stack the playoffs with SEC and southern teams.

Oh shoot, was Oregon #2? Got it mixed up in my head. That would change a ton. Oregon would smoke MSST and TCU would wreck FSU. So then you'd have a semifinal of Oregon/TCU instead of a quarterfinal of that.

And I likewise can't wait for an 8 team especially if it's 5 conference champs by default + 3 at-large.

It's going to be awesome. That would have been such an interesting thing to see.

CFB Playoff

There's irony here...

The Big XII title game would have been Baylor vs. K-State. We got that game on Saturday.

They declared both champs when there was still a mathematical possibility of both getting in. If the B12 knew they would be shut out of the CFB, I guarantee they would have circled the wagons around only Baylor.

Agree. I think TCU is better right now, but Baylor won the head-to-head. That has to mean something. And they should have been in over Ohio State. Obviously, Ohio State has proven that they're good enough to be there. The question is whether or not they earned the spot.

All of this will be easier with 8 teams.

TCU was the better team, and I think the B12 knew that, but really had no leg to stand on promoting them, so the dual champs was created. They slit their own throat trying to promote their best team instead of their "champion."

Sure. And TCU only has themselves to blame for blowing the lead to Baylor.

Big thanks to the Carolina Panthers for making my point about how a playoff is a lousy way to crown a national champion. At 8-8-1, the Panthers are in contention for a Super Bowl while the 11-6 Steelers and 11-6 Cardinals have been eliminated. Is there anyone out there who would seriously rank the Panthers ahead of either of those teams if the question to be answered is "what team was the best in the 2014 NFL season?"

Big thanks to Oregon and Ohio State for proving that a playoff is what CFB needed.

The BCS 'chip this year would've probably been Bama vs FSU lol.

I said "I don't like the playoff." I didn't say "I DO like the BCS."

In my preferred system, the historical bowl rivalries would have been preserved and you would have gotten the game you wanted. The Big 10 champion would have met the Pac-12 champion in the Rose Bowl like they've done for decades. Ohio State would have played Oregon.

Are you suggesting we go back to just voting for a champion? Because the winner of an OSU vs OU Rose Bowl would not have been crowned the champion of college football.

Carolina, ultimately, will not win the Super Bowl and Arizona doesn't deserve to win the Super Bowl if they can't beat a 7-8-1 team...

Wizards doesn't think there should be a national champion post in 3...2...
No need to repeat myself, I've made my argument clear in that regard. Today's bump was in light of a new piece of information (Carolina's win over Arizona) that I believe illustrates my point.

Funny how the two things people go after me for the most stand in stark contrast to one another: I'm too pro-ESPN and I also hate the playoff too much.

The NFL never made college football's claim that their regular season is superior due to the fact that "every game matters." In the NFL, not every game does matter, and certainly not equally. However, if we're operating under the premise that part of what makes CFB great is that every game DOES matter, we shouldn't accept a system in which we crown a national champion that is clearly inferior to a team they defeat in a single head-to-head matchup, ignoring the evidence of the previous 12 or 13 games.

Example: If the 18-0 Patriots lose to the 12-6 Giants in 2007 under an "every game matters" system, the Patriots still get my vote for National Champion, assuming our goal is to equate "National Champion" with "best team that year."

Did you watch the games? Carolina's win doesn't prove anything. Carolina is currently a clearly better team than 'Zona. You can't make a case for the team with Ryan Lindley as QB....

That's my point, and it all gets back to what you're trying to accomplish in crowning your champion. The Super Bowl does a fine job of crowing the best team CURRENTLY, but it does a poor job of crowning "best team for the 2014-2015 season." Going back to "every game matters," college football has always been about the entirety of the season, not a back-loaded what-have-you-done-for-me-lately postseason hype-fest.

Well said and couldn't agree more. Currently they are a better team. As for the CFP I believe last weeks games prove that this is currently the best option for college football. I just don't want to hear the argument about expanding the number of teams.

Every game does matter in CFB. Not to necessarily to be crowned the champion, but to have the opportunity to become the champion. A 7-8-1 team will never have the opportunity to win the college championship. Completely different scenarios.
