I'm for deferring, but only because we've been very productive in the 3rd quarter thus far and have reliably screwed up almost every opening drive this season.

I think part of the problem is defenses are flying to the ball against us in the opening quarter and half. They're somewhat more winded by the 2nd half, and we've made adjustments at that point too. In the first possession you have no idea how the defense is really going to react and how they're going to attack you. We really should think about deferring.

Also that we're cosmically incapable of opening a game without some combination of timeouts and delay of game penalties.

BK stated he will always take the ball if we win the toss...this was like 2 years ago when he was asked...

Yeah, I really will be kind of stunned to see him defer, ever. I think his preference is to try to get a lead and then just keep the foot on the gas. He likes to have the whole playbook available; he hates to have to play from behind when the other side knows you are going to try to get the ball down the field quickly.

I would take the ball if we win the toss for a couple of reasons. The wind is supposed to be out of the west, so no real advantage either way. Golson can drive the football through the wind. I suspect kelly will still try to push the ball downfield. Putting points on the board first OR moving the chains a couple of times and pinning them deep would be a gamble worth taking. I think our odds of winning improve dramatically if we score first. Put that pressure on hogan to come from behind.

I'm not debating the advantage of scoring on the first drive. The problem is Notre Dame never seems to do it. Starting with the ball in the second half is great because you a) always know what you need and b) You have the ball AFTER making half-time adjustments. The first half is all about your initial gameplan...which could be a poor one.

Sorry man I disagree here. You're forgetting the best reason to take the ball. Our defensive adjustments have been consistently lights out in the second half this year. If you asked me which half I would rather have our defense have an extra possession I'd pick second half every time.

I'm kind of freaking about about the bug going around the football players.

Me too. Sheldon and Jarron are two guys we can't afford to play sub-par against a team like Stanford...or not play at all. They need to be healthy and play solid. Not be shells of themselves because they've been sick all week and still recovering... or worse, still sick.

Hopefully it's nothing major cuz we need those guys. Ronnie too.

I was feeling super confident about this game but if those 3 are out or play poorly then I am very concerned. I was thinking we'd win by a solid 2 possessions but if those guys are not themselves then I think it's a toss up. Changes everything about our D.

As Whiskey already pointed out our third quarter offense has been incredible...So at a minimum it's a wash in that sense.

Not to derail this great thread but just wanted to post an update: our son was born at 9:13. 8 lbs 3 ozs, 21.5 inches long, healthy and asleep next to mom.

He said he wanted ND to kick Stanford's ass for his birthday.

You're doing it wrong! You're supposed to create a thread in the recruiting forum that says "2032 [Insert State Here] Athlete [Insert Name Here]"

Seriously, congrats! Sounds like a Linebacker to me. My son was born over 9lbs in June, future ND TE. My other son is 2 years old, he was over 11lbs, he'll be RT next to my youngest. Looking forward to seeing you at the banquet in 18 years :smilewink

Congrats man! Glad to hear all are heathy. Now, all that's left to do is to saw down those freakin' trees. Go Irish!

One other thing about deferring that people forget about is that by taking the ball first, you have the ability to run a scripted drive with no pressure from the rest of the game. You can test certain theories, be aggressive and do so without any amount of game behind you telling the opposing DC's what to do. The opponent doesn't know what is working and what is not yet, so that is a clear advantage to the offensive play caller. Something you cannot get after playing a half of football.

That point, I assume, is very appealing to an offensive guy like BK.

That's actually a great point. If Golson is calm and the rest of the guys can control their nervous energy i.e. no false starts/mental mistakes it gives the players and staff a feel for what will and will not work early on and it also identifies mismatches in personnel.

If a tree falls in the middle of ND stadium just after the final gun, but no fans are left to see it because they all left once the game was decided in the first quarter does it make a--- oh, you get the point...

I see the listed start time, can anyone confirm that the game is still going to start at 12:30PST?

I'm going to SC v ASU game, and hopefully I can watch the start of the ND game before I leave for the Coliseum. I'll have to watch the rest of the game thru a tablet, but its better than nothing.
