ND coming off a bye in the Kelly era:

Beat #15 Utah by 25
Lost to USC by 14
Beat Miami by 38
Beat USC by 4
Beat BYU by 10

So 4-1 with a couple blowouts against good teams.

Syracuse is the best team on the schedule so far, true or false? That alone, considering how mediocre the Irish have looked for stretches of games, should stop all blowout predictions.

I don't think they are any more talented than Michigan.

I was so confident about this game coming into this week, now you all have me terrified. Losing to Syracuse would be absolutely awful. Even if they are a solid team, that would be the sort of embarrassing loss because no one gives Syracuse any credit as being a solid team. Just like losing to Navy. You can argue that Navy is a solid team until you're blue in the face, but people will always just say "It's Navy! They're a service academy! They suck!" Same thing would happen with Syracuse.

I feel like a bunch of you are hedging right now in case we lose or play poorly. Really don't see it and you all know I'm generally a pessimist/realist

It's Friday so my normal concern pops up and I become convinced we could lose to Prairie View A &M.

I'm scarred from previous debacles to think we have victories locked up.

Fear not. We're not in the SEC so we'll never play them.

The Michigan team we faced was not the same Michigan team Utah faced. Michigan came into our game with all of the confidence in the world and every reason to be hopeful for their season and game against us. We beat the hell out of them, and they went home and laid an egg and will likely do that from here on out.

Point is, while Syracuse may be better than Michigan is now, Syracuse is not better than the UM team we faced, IMO.

You're absolutely right. The only way I see Syracuse having a chance in this game is if Hunt has a career day (against ND, that's definitely possible). But the staff has done such a great job of getting faster on defense and I'm just not as worried about facing a dual-threat QB as I was 2-3 years ago.

Notre Dame always seems to play better away from South Bend and they're coming off of a bye. I think we're gonna see a ND team similar to the Michigan game, a team that will be coming in very focused and will do the little things right.

All I have to say is that my twin sister and her hubby have degrees from Syracuse. How a good Irish Catholic could consort with anything Orange, other than citrus, is beyond me.

Syracuse over ND in basketball I can accept. I'd grumble but understand the result. Football is a whole different kettle of beans*. I went into hiding after The Irish lost to The Orange. I'd rather keep seeing the light of day for the next few years.

In defense of my twin, she transferred to Syracuse to pursue a degree in Television Production. Bob Costas was a classmate of hers. Syracuse has an excellent program.

Bottom Line? Fück Syracuse. Squeeze the juice out of them!

*A mixed metaphor I heard from someone years ago that still makes me chuckle.

Being from upstate NY I have many friends who graduated from the 'Cuse. Can't deal with another loss to them.

Just watch. In four weeks, some scrub RB will run for 150 and make us look like a MAC team. This is Notre Dame.

Totally believe that's what's happening but I don't buy that this will be a close game. I've watched about 6 quarters of Syracuse games this year and they look awful. Has nothing to do with the excuses you mentioned. For this to be a "close" game Syracuse would have to hold us to less than 28 points. I don't see it, especially since we are coming off a bye.

My single biggest fear is that we're going to be looking ahead to Stanford and this is the biggest game of the year for Syracuse.

Allow me to amend this statement to my own previous beliefs:

"My single biggest fear is that we're going to be looking ahead to Michigan and this is the biggest game of the year for Rice."

After taking care of Rice the week before scUM, and watching ND beat Purdue soundly despite a lackluster performance, I'm finding it hard to worry about outmanned opponents finally.

I get where Lax is coming from because it is the thing I worry about as well. And I am starting to fall into the line of thinking that maybe were past that as well.

But, not being too far removed from having to prepare weekly for games. They are still kids, and kids look ahead/lose focus. So I ultimately try to not set expectations.

Hoping for a quick start...It always goes better when we dont trip over ourselves for the first quarter and a half.

Agreed. It is time for this team to justify all my kool aid drinking. I can see the D totally stoning them in the 2nd half.

Two cents: a]. Syracuse football site has about eight experts [?] who pick their games. All but two see a two touchdown or better Notre Dame win. They are absolutely terrified of Everett. One picked Notre dame by less than a touchdown. The other picked Syracuse by one point with tongue planted firmly in cheek. As far as I could read, no one there thinks Syracuse will win;

b]. Their hopes are founded upon the idea that their running backs are good, and they have at least three of them. Their quarterback also is a good runner. However, no one seems to think that their quarterback is a good passer, and if ND stuffs their run, they see disaster.

c]. They are also at least semi-terrified of Notre Dame's speed which they see as markedly faster than anyone they've yet played particularly on defense.

d]. My own comment/intuition on whether we do not take them seriously and look ahead: I have great difficulty seeing this, as our OLine is restructured and they and the whole rest of the team should be edgy about how that's going to go.

e]. My other guess is that the Syracuse DBackfield has no chance covering our receivers, and if the OLine does at least a moderately good job, Everett is going to kill these guys [just as their predictors fear.]

f]. one semi-ridiculous hope that I read they were holding out was that we won't get any pass-rush, so that the inaccurate run-first QB will be able to sit in his rocking chair and get relaxed enough to throw accurately. Sheldon, Romeo, Jalen, and the dynamic freshmen duo [Hill/Tranquill] will probably severely disappoint them.

Yeah. Settle down. We have way more talent, and are well-rested and (hopefully) well-coached enough, especially with a bye week, that we beat these guys easily. I'll propose 42-17.

I think we will move the ball easy and have lots of yards

My biggest concern is how we deal with turnovers....they haven't happened yet and surely will at some point...

I think we start fast but sloppy and eventually pound them into submission.

Golson finally looks human
