He has the chance to get a good chunk of that 5.5 in the first 2-3 games. Rice shouldn't be too tough for him, he'll be facing a true frosh LT against UM, and Purdue shouldn't be to tough either.

Imagine how jacked we'd be if Trumbetti starts those 3 games with 3-4 sacks. I'll be running through walls.

More than likely he will come over the field on 3rd downs though. that might eat into his opportunities. If he's stout against the run though that's all we can ask for, anything else is a bonus

For perspective, I looked at Lynch's first year sack total, which was 5.5. Different scheme, different player, different schedule.

But, if he did go over that total, it would probably place him as at least the 3rd best freshman year DL in ND history.

I think it's very possible that he could have 4 sacks through the first 3 games. He won't be demanding double teams right away, which will help him a lot.

That would be fantastic but the real story is the ripple effect on depth up front. Just assuming he is a capable every down player now, that gives us two solid options that can play in a number of positions depending on down and distance in Rochelle and Okwara, a hidden kind of multiplier like how the Seahawks create advantages.

So if of Utopo, Hounshell and Matuska we can get something approaching replacement level our depth concerns should decrease considerably, especially with the other freshman giving us a rotating cast of situational opportunities.

So I mentioned this the other day. In the Aug. 9th UND.com practice video Ishaq took two 1 on 1 reps lining up from the DT position and I thought that was interesting and maybe indicating something to come. Here's what TJ had to say about Rochelle but also about that situation.

Rochell likely will play more SDE in both even and odd fronts, but he'll also play some DT (3-tech) situationally as a scheme-versatile DL.

Like Ishaq, he can kick down inside from SDE to a DT position in obvious passing situations and against certain offenses spreading the field widely. That gets more of the situational pass-rushers and upfield edge guys -- Rabasa, Williams, Hill, etc -- onto the field in such circumstances.

Very similar to what the NYG did with their Nascar package. I like it.

So this part of the article really gets me excited. The call it and haul it approach will allows us to hopefully play fast and in college football you can catch these teams sleeping so often. Part of Oregon's success isn't these magical plays that they have that nobody can decipher. Its because they put speed on the field and are always going. Teams get tired and make mistakes.

“In 2012, obviously the defense was the strength of our team,” he said. “We played more conservative to not mess it up too much, let the defense win the game for us. Now, it’s definitely more of an aggressive mindset.
“Coach Kelly has confidence in me, to allow so much on my plate now to where we can spread it out and attack different things. We can sit down and watch film and have an actual back-and-forth dialogue, where back in 2012 it was more him telling me what to do.”

I'd be ecstatic with a 3 or 4 sack year for Trumbetti. Pre-season hype is fun and all, but he is still a freshman. If he can pick up four sacks in his rookie season, I'd say that's a huge success and bodes incredibly well for the future.

Yeah let's temper expectations on Trumbetti for now. Heck even Clowney "only" had 8 his freshman year.

I'll be ecstatic if he can hold his own against Cam Erving and Andrus Peat.

I don't view setting the O/U at 5.5 sacks as unrealistic.

Lord Daniel Cage is massive. He will be definitely playing this year.

Some of the DL techniques being taught are something I have looked for since forever ago. Maybe they did teach them and I missed it but this Defense looks like one primed for some mistakes but a lot of action and forcing play/turnovers.

Let's hope the mistakes happen on first and second down in stead of 3rd and 4th.

I know DL vs OL 1 on 1 is a major disadvantage to OL but 2 on 2 starts to tilt that advantage a little. Not all the way, I understand. However, the DL was manhandling some of our OL studs handily. Not sure if the DL is that good or the OL is that bad right now....

It's About Depth

It's About Depth

I've never heard Coach Kelly as optimistic as he was at yesterday's press conference. He's clearly delighted about the number of defensive players who'll see action this year, including seven-----seven!----freshmen.

We haven't had this kind of depth, on both sides of the ball, since the Holtz era. Kelly has built this program methodically over the past four years and I think and hope it's going to pay big dividends this year. Maybe it's wishful thinking (I don't think so) but we're a hell of a lot better than the media is projecting.

Depth is the key. The SEC is not better because it has better #!'s. It predominates because its top teams have significantly better #2's and 3's than everybody else. We're not quite there yet, but we're a lot closer than we were two years ago.

Good things are going to happen this year, I think. It's critical that we beat the s**t out of UM. Not only to give them a well-deserved going away present but to solidify the team's confidence, particularly Golson's. If we beat UM handily, we'll be a 10 or 11 win team. I'd love to think we could run the table but that's unrealistic at this point.

I"m more excited this year than I have been since 1993.

Day's developed physically. It's obvious he's putting in some work. He's going to be fun to watch this year.

Pleased to see Ishaq's upper body catching up to his lower. He always looked to have a strong base but spindly arms. No more.

I love how far Sheldon Day has come. From Warren Freakin Central to a leader of the Defense at Notre Dame. Just outstanding.

These vids got me so updog, I can't wait for the season.

Show me a defensive lineman that doesn't look good. Their basics seem to be better. Most have a great first step, and good, violent hands off of the ball.

None of the freshmen showed look like freshmen to me. Trumbetti could be mistaken for a returning starter in his best video.

Williams has unbelievable upper body strength for being as "slender" as he is. Ironically, he looks the most freshman-like of all of the '14's, but his strength and speed are brutal.

I get what you're saying and appreciate your opinion. I am in no way saying you're wrong because we can't know one way or another. But I think there is a big difference between "depth" and "quality depth."

To the extreme, quality depth is having Councell/Jaylon Smith as your 3-deep behind Spond last year. Or having a Kona Schwenke as a reserve.

If Jarron Jones and Sheldon Day got hurt I have no confidence in their backups playing to their level or close. None of these freshmen are 5 stars, although Morgan was close. In 2015/2016 our depth will be absurdly good. It's already great on offense. On defense though, I think Diaco fucked us at LB and DL and we'll need some time to get these freshmen playing at a high level. They'll be able to pass rush right now to a degree, but they will make mistakes and struggle defending the run. Just the nature of freshmen being freshmen.
