It's disappointing that he is not coming to Irish Invasion, because he has the versatility to provide depth on both sides of the ball at a number of positions. As much as I really like him though, it's important to note that as an overall athlete he's largely inferior to someone like CJ Prosise on every level (smaller, slower, less explosive)... so it's relatively easy to see why major programs might be slow playing him a little as he doesn't have your prototypical "NFL" measurables for any position.

He seems to me to be the type of all-purpose "tweener" that a program like Stanford will take and end up turning into a WMD.

Of course, Stanford's tweeners are usually the d-line/linebacker/nomad/going-rover type of front 7 guys, but my point stands in that Justin looks (to me, at least) to have nearly elite athleticism and good size. Considering ND's consistent failure to actually reach the limit of 85 because some dumb shit always ends up happening, I'd take a player Justin Tranquill all day.

Totally. The Vinnie Sunseri comparison is also really spot on, and shows how play recognition/intangibles can make a B+ athlete an A level safety, and an A+ athlete a B level safety. There is so much more to the position than being big/strong/fast and able to lay the lumber that you really want to recruit guys with a great head on their shoulders.

Having seen Justin play in person, he's certainly more athletic than his brother......I know they're different in body types, but I'd like to see him get an offer.

ND will hold out until October/November or even later to offer. They will be making a huge mistake if they don't extend one. The work ethic in this family is unreal and both won't disappoint. IMO

Agreed with most of the recent posts. Justin's size might put a lower ceiling on his potential than other recruits we're chasing, but his other attributes likely give him a very high floor as well. Put another way, guys like Justin seem to have a very low chance of busting. Would love to see him as a part of this class.

Let's try this again...

As I posted in the II thread, made it to campus but has to leave for the 7-7 tourney.

Told Loy he may return on Tuesday for camp.

Somewhat interesting quotes:

“Most colleges I’m being recruited by are recruiting me as a defensive back,” said Tranquill. “Notre Dame saw my film and most of it is offensive film. They originally thought they’d recruit me as an offensive player. They didn’t really know I was a defensive recruit as well."

“I think that may have changed their mind, potentially safety or corner. I just sent them a link to my defensive back film that I’ve had with (Athletes With Purpose). I hope to hear back from them soon.”

That's..... odd.

I love his upside as a nickel. Physical presence in the box, but good potential in man coverage.

How does that happen when they were at older bro game s and he is on campus

My thoughts, and pardon me in advance, is this is a strategy of slow-play. Oh, you can play defense, too?

You mean to tell me that they haven't been over all the film, with a microscope? Isn't this the staff that excels at finding the position, and then maximizing on player development?

I think they are waiting to pull him in late in the process.

I'm having a hard time believing it as well. While most of his highlights are on the offensive side of the ball, you can't tell me that ND wasn't aware of the defensive stuff as well. To me it seems more of an excuse to buy time while ND waits on higher rated recruits to decide.

Edit: Bogs beat me to it.

Agree, they know all they need to know. It depends on how others higher on the board fall. I get that, but I swear, no matter how hard we try, 85 never happens. It's a curse.

According to Justin's quotes Coach Cooks really had no idea Justin was playing CB and told him that he only works with experienced DBs at camps. All film ND had was on offense. (Ultimate slow play?) Also commented that ND plans to take 2-3 more DBs.

I know a few well informed posters here has said we will have some upcoming transfers due to new defense but damn I am preparing for a max exodus. Seems class will hover around 25 with a kicker to boot..

I've been rooting for an offer for Justin, but I would be shocked if he gets the offer after some bad news.

I saw on a couple of articles about the 7 on 7 Championship that Justin had to leave the game because of a knee injury. I was hoping for the best and that he just tweeked it. Instead, it looks like he tore is ACL.

As some others have said earlier, he could've skipped the 7 on 7 and came to Irish Invasion and earn a scholly, but he chose to stick with his teammates because that's the kind of guy he is. Great kid.

This seems like a good opportunity for Preferred Walk-On offer...low-risk for ND, high reward for Justin.

I would think he will be reaching out to see who honors and who pulls scholarship offers first. I am sure that the PWO might have an appeal since it is in-state and with his brother, but who knows if he would consider that a slap in the face.

I like it! If there is a spot available come the fall give him the scholly. I really feel bad for the kid now as I believe he was on the fringe of getting an offer, even if it were to come late in the cycle.

Can the family afford the tuition? That would be the big question if he was offered as a PWO.

There are always student loans though that would be quite expensive if he never earned a scholarship. Maybe some type of financial aid if he qualifies. Would hate to think money could be the reason he doesn't get a shot at his dreams. Assuming other schools pull his scholarship offer. Most schools do not honor them when a player gets hurt.

Besides Hilliard, there wasn't anyone I wanted more in this recruiting class. Damn. Really sucks for him AND ND.
