Why do you tweet recruits?

I'm actually not @Donttweetkids though I work closely with him and point out those in our fan base who need a message. Thanks Patrick and STL

I think recruiting process would be a lot smoother for fan bases, coaches and players if fans do what they're supposed to do and spectate. Recruiting is a big aspect of a program. Fans want to get involved in a program they pay money to watch games. A diehard fan doesn't put pads on for the Irish they watch. I feel they should do the same in recruiting. Watch. I'm not in a position of power, its just my two cents but I wish fans would realize they're not involved or helping programs by tweeting.

Good lord. I just read through this thread.

1. Grubal is a d-bag in the biggest fashion. Nobody is that d*mn clueless about how bad tweeting recruits can be. I think he took you guys for a ride on this one. He'll be tweeting Jaylon Smith before the end of the day.

2. While we all know the impact, I don't think it does any good to call a guy like this out. Why waste the energy?

When it comes to tweeting, don't do it anyway. it's the destruction of our language and why young people are such idiots these days. Nothing like ruining our chances with a 5 star guy in 140 characters or less.

Sheesh

You thought Grubl was bad? Get a load of Actor Danny Hayden.

Danny_New_Headshot_2008.jpg

He even introduces himself as "actor Danny Hayden":

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p>@<a href="https://twitter.com/autrydenson">autrydenson</a> please accept my friend request. U r my football hero, the greatest college RB ever. I'm actor Danny Hayden.</p>— Actor Danny Hayden (@DannyHaydenSAG) <a href="https://twitter.com/DannyHaydenSAG/status/296071031808987136">January 29, 2013</a></blockquote>
<script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

Literally does nothing but tweet at our players and recruits all day long.

I actually did create some offer-based rankings:

2014 Football Player Rankings « Rank By Offers

Much of what you say is true. Offers do go unreported. I think that's because there isn't any incentive to report them. If offer-based ranking became popular, there would be incentive. Offers from some schools are definitely more valuable than others, which is why I weight them:

College Football Team Weightings « Rank By Offers

What you end up with isn't a ranking that measures pure talent, it includes a bunch of other things that coaches have to consider like academic ability and character. It's more of a measure of how valuable each recruit is to college programs in general.

I'm still looking for a way to adjust for early commitments.

Stop tweeting recruits

I realize this is hostile territory for this opinion, and that Nick Watkin’s thread is not the appropriate place, but I’m going to give one response. If you’d like to discuss it further, please DM me on Twitter. My ID is @NDIrishManiac.

I realize that many Notre Dame fans believe tweeting to recruits is tantamount to murder ever since the video came out from ND Compliance. I’ve seen the video several times, and I’ve considered this issue at length. I disagree. If regular fans tweeting to recruits is indeed a violation (this is debatable), it is one so minor that the NCAA has never hinted at enforcing it even though it is violated openly thousands of times every day.

What do the recruits think about fans tweeting to them? They expect it and encourage it. In my opinion, Notre Dame fans have handicapped themselves in this regard. It does the Irish fan base no favors when a top recruit tweets, “Where are my Notre Dame fans?” with no response.

I see this as a difference of opinion. You think I’m a criminal, and I think you've overreacted to a video that Notre Dame wisely created to protect itself in the event the NCAA did come calling.

You’re certainly entitled to your opinion.

Please don’t hate me. I am not a monster!

Exactly right...and let me add that there are plenty of kids who report offers that they never receive. They (or there parents) straight up lie to reporters, just to make their kids seem better than they are and get them more attention in the hopes of getting REAL offers. The schools cannot comment publicly, so many kids get away with it. It's only when coaches tip off reporters that kids get caught lying.

Also, don't forget the schools that offer so many kids that most their 'offers' only mean that they are interested in the recruit and that they will continue to recruit them. But their offers are anything but commitable. Alabama is one such school. Whenever a ND fan says that we got a guy that Saban offered, take it with a grain of salt because they offer anyone they feel like they should continue to recruit and evaluate. Think about how incredibly hot that program is, and they have probably close to 200 reported offers out (don't quote me on that #, havent done the research and only heard that #), and yet they have so few verbals. Why? Because they will only take commitments from certain recruits, regardless of offers.

At this point, data quality is the biggest concern with the offer-based approach. Although I agree it’s likely that some recruits exaggerate their total offers when talking to reporters, I doubt there are significant numbers of recruits who lie about having specific offers. This would tend to damage their relationship with the school they lied about.

As for the “uncommitable offers” … as you say, those offers “mean that they [the schools] are interested in the recruit and that they will continue to recruit them”. The recruit should certainly get some credit for having the offer. In addition, very few programs are in a position to play this game the way that Alabama does.

If you are who we think you are and you tweet recruits, then you are a complete idiot. Frankly, you aren't welcome here either. You should really sit down and think about how pathetic of an existence you have.

I can't begin to explain how much I don't like you.

Do u really think a ND recruit thinks more highly of Notre Dame because u tweet at him or that if u don't he thinks less? If a recruit is let down by the lack of tweets at him from ND fans then he can go to UK or Tennessee because ND isn't right for him

And I'm just going to tell you that this will not endear you to folks on this site and you may not find your opinion met with kind reactions. It IS a problem says the school you allege to be a fan of.

I understand if you're always positive and accurate, it is USUALLY harmless. But the reality is, if you actually think your tweet as a nobody (no offense) does anything good, you're, well, not living in reality.

I say leave it alone and find a new hobby. Like me, I'm getting my *** handed to me in online poker.

maniac, if you break the law and don't get caught you still break the law, so even though the ncaa may not discipline for the actions it doesn't make it right.

i would consider maybe hanging out with friends to discuss nd football/recruiting

I will say it more diplomatically. We believe as a "group" that it is pretty lame and immature to tweet at 16-17 year old kids. We feel that time would be better served if you were to go out and serve your own community and give back to the younger generation. Go serve at a local homeless shelter and feed some underprivileged youth. Another option would be go to your local church and join the choir or ministry team. But you like to tweet so maybe you can tweet and organize rallies for the poor? Tweet for peace? I have many, many more ideas that I will be willing to share if you're interested. Otherwise have a nice night and please refrain from tweeting recruits if you can.
