James Franklin explains the #1 thing affecting recruiting right now

Mainord [Kentucky wide receivers coach Tommy Mainord] said, "I knew there was excitement (at UK), but I didn't know the level until I got to the office and felt it. You can't imagine when you're recruiting a kid out of high school and his twitter account jumps a thousand people in 2 hours because the fans found out who he was."

He added, "It is overwhelming to me and it really brings a new excitement that I didn't know we had to myself because I know what it's doing for recruiting. We can only do so much. When they feel the Big Blue Nation out there doing that... I can't tell you how many letters I write, how many phone calls I make, or how hard I work, the fans can pour so much into it that we can't see. It's awesome to see."

Franklin [Vanderbilt head coach James Franklin] said, "Social media has completely changed recruiting. What I mean by that is if you have a crazy fan base, if you've got a fan base that has 105,000, they love their team, and now they are all involved in social media, and they are blowing up these kids on twitter all the time."

"These kids are all about twitter followers. You get offered from a school, and the next day you have 4,000 followers from that school, and they're all saying you should come to that school and this is the reason why. That's not supposed to happen, but there's no way to control it. It has a huge factor."

Franklin concluded, "It's not just in our conference, but also across the country. You see that being a major factor."

This is the new reality. The Notre Dame fan base is the only one so averse to contacting recruits using social media.

It’s like uniform changes, Jumbotrons, field turf, or standing at games. The times are changing. We can change with them or get left behind.

Now, get out there and tweet at some recruits. Let's let them know Notre Dame has one of the largest fan bases in college football.

He actually has insulted us, just in a passive-aggressive way. Read his posts carefully. I do agree though that at least he responded and didn't cower away.

OK, first of all, enough with the dramatics. You sound like you should be trying out for a Broadway play. Everything you write about us here is so over-the-top it's annoying.

And we've been saying this BEFORE the video came out. The video had very little to do with members of this site telling dorks like you and grubl and domelover3 to get a life and leave these guys alone.

So the people that get paid to follow the rules are wrong, and you are right. And therefore, it's OK for you to do it because you disagree with the rule??? And also, it's a minor violation, so that also makes it OK? My Lord, that is some twisted logic.

THIS IS MY PROBLEM WITH YOU DORKS!!! We haven't handicapped ourselves AT ALL lol! First off, when we are producing back-to-back top 5 classes (as it looks), how are we handicapping ourselves? 2nd of all, you have NOTHING to do with these recruits choosing ND. Nothing. We all laugh at dorks like you and grubl when you take credit for getting players to sign with ND, as if you had anything to do with it. I already know, you're going to say that you never take credit, but you know you feel a part of it. You're not. Like, AT ALL.

And make up your mind. In one breath you say that tweeting recruits plays no part whether a recruit signs with ND or not, and in the next breath you are saying ND fans handicap themselves by not tweeting recruits enough. Which one is it?

For me, it's not hate, it's pity. You think you are part of something that you aren't; you think you are helping ND but you aren't; you think you are friends with these guys but you aren't. And man, you believe it to the tilt.

No, you do a lot more than that. You're playing the innocent here, but read your own tweets. ALL OF THEM. Nice try.

Most of us here follow the recruits FROM A DISTANCE. No contact or very little contact. You take it to an extreme. You get at them when they don't even ask you to, and you do it with a lot recruits. That's creepy. What we do here is completely different.

Do we really need to look up your twitter account and post all your tweets? You know, the ones where the recruits are not asking for your input and you just bug them and make us all look bad? Stop lying dude. You're delusional if you think that is all guys like you and grubl do.

No one paranoid, except seemingly you. Most of us are saying stop doing it because you look creepy, you look foolish, and it makes the university look bad when fans like you go overboard. And it's even more pathetic that you completely ignore a university you supposedly love just so you can pretend to be a part of something that you are not.

Personally, I don't think it's a problem when a recruit asks fans to "get at them" and fans oblige. Or after a game when a fan tweets 'good job bro'. Not my cup of tea but whatever. My problem is when the dorks go overboard and annoy the recruits and get into twitter wars with other fan bases over recruits and act like they have something to do with them choosing ND. THAT is pathetic is hell.

This loser ignored my first post to him so I re-posted it.

I wish someone would just ban this dork whom has never touched a girl in his life so as not to embarrass this site even further. This loser doesn't just tweet recruits, he then further embarrasses our fan base by getting into twitter wars with other dorks from other fan bases.

I liked it better when you idiots just played Dungeons and Dragons and didn't try to inject yourself to something that wants no part of you...

What is this Twitter of which you speak? A twit is a twit is a twit. Why should I have a mouse on my desk – top or drawer? I don't need no rodent eating my cheese. I don't need no cursor doing my cursing.

Good Gravy! Leave them kids alone. All and all you're just another brick in the wall.

The real issue here, as another poster is fond of saying, is the "Pussification of America!"

Seriously, every time I see a capital "lol" when I don't have direct information that the loler was doing that for effect . . . let alone the kind of recruits that respond.

How Social Media Has Transformed College Football Recruiting | Bleacher Report

Garrett, who is rated as a 5-star linebacker by 247 Sports and is considering schools such as LSU, Tennessee, Ole Miss and Florida, enjoys interacting with fans and developing relationships with fellow recruits on Twitter. He says posting messages such as “Rocky Top” to Tennessee fans is bound to get bushels of retweets to his Twitter account (@CG340) and earn him more new followers. “People definitely pay attention to stuff like that, but I just love the whole process,” Garrett said.

Matt Elam’s approach: Enjoy Twitter, recruiting and have fun with once in a lifetime experience | vaughtsviews

Five-star John Hardin defensive tackle Matt Elam has enjoyed every aspect of the recruiting process, including interaction with fans and recruits on Twitter. “This comes around once in your lifetime, so have fun,” he said. “I love Twitter and going back and forth with fans and watching people do that stuff. I just enjoy all the crazy fan bases, and I plan to keep enjoying that.”

None of these recruits or players give any shits about you. I hope you realize that. They don't know who you are and never will. You are not friends with them. You are pathetic.

“That's a nice red bar you got there. LOL”

A colored bar on a message board means nothing to me. This is the new reality, regardless of whether it’s popular on this board.

“None of these recruits or players give any shits about you. I hope you realize that. They don't know who you are and never will. You are not friends with them.”

That’s the way it should be. I’m not looking for personal recognition.

So what you are trying to say is that based on some idiotic logic that you tweeting at recruits is a benefit to the program and the university?

It’s really quite simple and logical … the recruits want to know what the different college fan bases think of them.

You're a creepy pederast.

You're favorite hobby is tweeting 17 year old kids that you don't know. What does that say about your character?

I truly wish you were a fan of another school. Your lack of understanding, critical thinking and general moral fiber are all terrible.

The logic that recruits might enjoy an active Twitter fan base is no different than the logic that recruits might pick a school for hot girls. And the act of tweeting a recruit is really no different than sending them direct mail (and likely just as inconsequential). And honestly, I can see how having a bunch of fans follow an athlete and show them "love" might give you a leg up on a place like Stanford that simply has zero fans.

The problem is that by the letter of the NCAA law it's not permissible contact. That's problem #1. Problem #2 comes from people who cross the line and either ask creepy questions or insult a recruit.

I follow about every recruit we have for news. And I'll occasionally retweet one of their tweets if it's funny or meaningful or otherwise deserves a retweet for some reason. But acting like an obsessed creepy stalker is not going to win anyone to Notre Dame... well, unless you look like Adriana Lima. And frankly, if a recruit chooses Notre Dame because of the Twitter love there is probably a 95% chance they're not a fit for the culture of this program.

Agree with LAX. If a recruit picks a school based on fans tweeting them, that tells me that recruit is a "me first" attention seeker and isn't going to cut it at ND. I can maybe buy that UK recruits like the attention because UK sucks and isn't a first option for anyone and the extra love from the fans may make the kids feel better about picking UK. That shits is unnecessary for ND recruits though. ND is a first option and kids don't need extra incentive or attention to make that pick.

You say you're not seeking personal attention? Bullshits. That's exactly what you, Grubl, and the rest of your douche bag cronies are doing. You guys think you are making a difference. You're not.

I used to be anti-tweeting recruits, but I've changed my stance a bit on it. I don't have a problem with people tweeting recruits as long as:

1) You're always positive.
2) Never ask recruits questions, only answer them accurately.
3) You don't mind wasting your time.
4) You never dog the school, coaches, decisions, administration, QB, etc.

The reality is some recruits enjoy interacting with fans. But you have to be intelligent, rational, and mature to do it the right way.

Regardless of the circumstances and how much recruits "love" it is creepy as sh*t and most random fans shouldn't be seen as a representation of a school. And like someone said before if someone picks a school because of Twitter they probably aren't the best fit for the program, regardless of the school.
