I root for the U.S. first, but for some reason I have always also rooted for England and the Dutch in the World Cup. Not sure why. In the past those squads have had the right mix of skill, physicality and flair for me, maybe.
Certainly with the English, it's partly the common language and shared cultural history (I mean, as a kid I grew up reading a lot of books that take place in England, like every Anglophone kid).
My friend jokes that rooting for these teams as well as ND shows that I am addicted to heartbreak. The English won the World Cup in 1966, and they have usually failed to meet expectations since. The Dutch have been runners up three times and never won. So, yeah. Maybe it's that.
I'm an Italian-American, so I want to like Italy, but their style of play is just too often too boring for me to really get excited about the Azzurri. And unlike gk, I'm a couple generations removed from an ancestor who actually lived there.
