The best pick for the type of football they want to play is in-state. Thankfully, they won't lure him away from MSU.
Doesn't Gruden's name come up every year when elite program's need a coach?
By all accounts, Tressel is a genuinely good guy who made a HUGE error in judgment, at Ohio State. His subsequent work, at Akron University, was performed at (as far as we know) high levels of both efficacy AND integrity. I'm not saying that he should just be forgiven or anything. I won't feel sorry for him if he never gets another coaching job. But lets not act like he was running a Miami-esque program, in Columbus. I think of Tressel in a similar vein as Hayes and Paterno; great coaches who were tremendously positive influences on countless numbers of young men, who will forever be remembered more for their flaws, than for all of the good that they did.

Not sure if this was posted earlier.
Michigan football: Top Ten Replacements for Brady Hoke If He Gets Fire
7. Chuck Martin, head coach, Miami (OH)
Who? We thought the same thing when this name was thrown out as someone to keep an eye on, but when you look deeper, it makes sense. Martin spent a decade in the state of Michigan as DC then head coach at Grand Valley State, the first 4 seasons as DC under Notre Dame HC Brian Kelly.
After assuming the head coaching role in 2004, Martin won NCAA D II National Championships in his 2nd and 3rd season. He reunited with Kelly at Notre Dame in 2011, and was OC during the Irish’s run to the BCS National Championship appearance following the 2012 season. Martin is in his first season as head coach at Miami (OH) – the same school that Michigan legend Bo Schembechler coached at prior to Michigan. Some have compared Martin’s background to Jim Tressel.
Ahhh, missed that.
So, this guy:

Your earlier post makes more sense now too.

If Miles were offered the job, he would 100% take it. In this interview with MLive this summer, Miles makes it very clear that he wants the Michigan job.
I like how Jim Harbaugh still makes lists as a possible replacement at Michigan. I wonder how deep/far back these writers even research candidates, they must have missed that last Wolverine coaching search.
Whatever they do, I don't want them to take Chuck Martin. I want him when Kelly retires.
I'm not sold on Martin as the future post-Kelly. Let's see if he can turn Miami around, then we'll talk. I think his OC work left a bit to be desired personally.

Jones maybe but I doubt they would pursue Franklin...Would Butch Jones or James Franklin make UM's short list of potential candidates?

If Jones was hired I imagine UT would take it very well.
I agree with whoever described him as being in the mold of The Senator, who went straight from NC's at the FCS level to NC's at the FBS level. I am not sure Tressel would have done as well as he did if he had taken Martin's path instead. Some people are born to be coordinators (Mattison, Weis) and some are born to be head coaches. His lack of success to date at Miami doesn't concern me; many coaches who start off poorly wind up doing very well in the long run. Kelly lost to Navy and Tulsa. Saban was smacked around by Louisiana-Monroe and Utah. Heck, Pete Carroll lost 4 of his first 5 games at USC.
Rodriguez did a pretty good job of eviscerating a program in record time. He didn't run the dead wood off. He chased away prime talent and then failed to produce with what was left. He also brought NCAA baggage with him and generated new infractions during his short stay. And I seemed to recall he engendered animosity from players, former players, alumni, faculty, administrators, and fans.
Did he have the worse record in UM history or did it just seem that way?
Other than that, yeah he got a raw deal.
Is Grantland really that hard off that they employ children to write their articles now? This is the author of the linked article above...
