I hear this argument a lot on our IE forums, and I think it's a bit awkward.

Guys, we're not on the team. 99.999% of us have nothing to do with whether the team wins or loses. I understand saying it if you're trying to help someone not get their hopes up. But other than that, it really doesn't matter if a discussion is geared toward this week, next week, next season or next decade. It's just an internet discussion. And, having dreams is what makes life tolerable...

Lol, great point. Sometimes people seem to think that if you are talking about a later game, you are assuming something you shouldn't about the team and any games in the interim, but more often you are assuming nothing of the sort or, if you are, it is totally irrelevant to the conversation about the later game. So that's annoying but I at least get that.

Other times, people seem to fear they'll jinx ND in the next game if they get too wrapped up in a discussion about a later game. Trust me, you won't. It also doesn't matter what shirt you wear on gameday, what chair you sit in, what beer you drink or what brand of tortilla chips you serve. Virtually nothing we do can affect the outcome of any game, unless we get to go to a game and cheer, and even then we're not doing much.

It's just a way for people to be contrary with others. Notice how it's almost always the same people who say it?

Actually I think that it is a notion that if *we* the public and fans are thinking about the future, then perhaps the players are too and if they shouldn't be doing it, we shouldn't be doing it (contrapositive).

What the **** do you mean I'm not on the team? You got a lot of balls coming in here saying such a thing. Just like I have told my wife a MILLION times over the years while I am sitting on the couch watching the Irish, "YES HONEY!!! The goddamn coaches CAN ****ING HEAR ME ON THE SIDELINES!!!"

You are trying to tell me that on Saturdays my eating lucky charms, drinking coffee in my nd mug, picking up a south bend tribune, not opening and drinking a killians and eating jalapeño Krunchers at kickoff while being Irish spring clean doesn't affect the outcome of a ND game, C'mon man, you gotta be crazy.

you got this idea from my reply to someone earlier today didnt you... :)

100% agree, I dont need to focus on Miami, because this is a forum, I can focus on every team on the schedule just enough to discuss and nothing bad happens to the team. I find it irritating as well when people come in and say "we need to focus on TEAM X first..." No we dont, the team does, the fanbase can do what they want. :)

College football players don't read the internet and exist in a vacuum.

I just think it's idiotic to try and compare teams like ND and USC right now when no one has any idea what either team will look like in late November. I have no problem with the revised predictions threads. I always read through them. Fair play to whoever wants to speculate two months into the future, but some people take a different approach.

Not that the media needs any help running wild with asinine stories about "being back" and crowning this team after 4 measly games, but IMO looking ahead perpetuates the image that ND fans are delusional and insufferable.

I agree with you 100%. It's the coaches' and players' responsibility to stay focused, not ours. Should we not be drunk during games as well?

Of course we are. That is exactly what the term means. Look it up.

Wait... so who's the .001% on here that does? We need to hear more from that guy.

Fan comes from fanatic, which might mean somewhat delusional, but it does not mean that ND fans need to be seen as ALL being insufferable idiots...like Alabama fans are. ESPECIALLY now.

totally agree with the OP, but i guess the one argument you could create is that we as fans dont need to make the hype machine any bigger than it already is. I mean we know that some players do check sites like this, and seeing articles on b/r (ik its awful but its there) that say things like WHY ND WILL WIN THE BCS CHAMPIONSHIP IN 2012 could put uneeded pressure on our guys and dont make it any easier for them to "focus on this week"

anways, I for one think thats a bunch of BS and that college football players should know (with the help of coaches) how to not get sucked into all the hype.

Our reality should be:

"Focus on the off-season, and hope there aren't a dozen defections, flips, and dismissals" every year from January to September.

I have "nothing to do with whether the team wins or loses"?!

I must take issue with that, unless you're among the non-believers who say I wasn't responsible for telekinetically holding back Kevin Harper's kick from hooking through the uprights!

I telekinected that damn ball so hard I pooped a little!

For some unfathomable reason (it was some Nun who did not speak english) you've been granted an IE grammar hall pass. Just don't push it, young man. Sister Mxyzptlk won't always be around to protect you.

Are you telling me I wore the same underwear for 5 months for nothing?
