Quiet day at work so far, so I spent a few hours reading up on USC’s recruiting situation. As of today, they have 16 commitments, four of which will be early enrolling. As I understand it, they have room for three more in the 2014 class. Their current commitments are as follows (ratings are 247 Composite):

O Line
  • OG Viane Talamaivao (4*)
  • OG Toa Lobendahn (4* EE)
  • OG Chris Brown (4*)
  • OT Jordan Austin (3* EE)

O Skill
  • TE Bryce Dixon (4*)
  • WR Rahshead Johnson (4*)
  • QB Jalen Greene (3*)
  • WR Shay Fields (3*)
  • WR Ajene Harris (2*)

D Front Seven:
  • SDE Claudeson Pelon (4* EE)
  • SDE Malik Dorton (3*)
  • SDE Austin Maloata (3*)
  • SDE Don Hill (3* EE)
  • ILB Olajuwon Tucker (3*)

D Secondary:
  • CB Jonathan Lockett (4*)
  • S Uchenna Nwosu (3*)

That puts them at 9 offensive commits and 7 defensive commits. Remaining targets include:

  • S Juju Smith (5*)
  • OG Damien Mama (5*)
  • CB Tee Shepard (4*)
  • CB Adoree’ Jackson (5*)
  • WR Michiah Quick (4*)
  • DT Josh Frazier (4* Bama Commit)

It sounds like Shepard is a lock to Troy at this point. I think they end up with Jackson and Mama as well. Unless I’m missing something, that puts them at their signing cap. Decommitments are a possibility, and I’m sure USC fans wouldn’t mind seeing someone like Harris back out. I’ve also heard talk that someone like Johnson could end up with a track scholarship and walk-on the football squad? Does that work? If so, it’s a sneaky way to get around their sanctions.

As hard as it is to believe, it’s not a complete stretch that Juju could end up Irish due to USC filling up. Unlikely, yes, but interesting to think about. Anyway, thought I'd share my research with you all.

word is they've gotten cunningham's kid to do the track scholly thing...may be sneaky, but it's smart. if i were them and i could get away with it, i'd do it too

Isn't it a rule that whatever sports makes the most money, that's the sport the a scholly counts for?? Otherwise every shady school would have football players on badminton schoolies left and right...

Yes, but only if the kid actually plays in a game in the higher revenue sport. I think he can be on a track schollie until his sophomore year if he doesn't play his freshman year.

I found the relevant NCAA rule:

NCAA Division I Manual said:
15.5.9 Multi-sport Participants.
15.5.9.1 Football. [FBS/FCS] In football, a counter who was recruited (per Bylaw 15.02.8) and/or offered financial aid to participate in football and who participates (practices or competes) in football and one or more sports (including basketball) shall be counted in football. A counter who was not recruited (per Bylaw 15.02.8) and/or offered financial aid to participate in football and who competes in football and one or more sports (in-cluding basketball) shall be counted in football. (Revised: 1/10/95 effective 8/1/95, 1/9/96 effective 8/1/96, 1/15/11 effective 8/1/11)

(Source: http://www.ncaapublications.com/productdownloads/D114.pdf pg. 208)

So if, for example, Adoree Jackson was to be given a track scholarship at USC, he would still count toward football scholarship limitations. Some folks on other forums seemed to think that after two years, a student with a track scholarship (for example) could join the football team without counting toward the football scholarship totals, but I think they are mistaken. In fact, the NCAA Manual covers that rather explicitly.

taking Tee's spot?

No, they want/need a lot of defensive backs, especially corners. They're going to try and get 5 of them, which includes Juju and Adoree Jackson. They apparently are still

There are mixed feelings on Plattenburg. The old staff saw him up close and passed on him, but he kept in contact with the UW coaches, who are now at USC. With USC being his dream school, he made the switch. He's a tweener though, too small to play safety but not with the most fluid of hips to be a great corner. But he's physical, and he might be a very good nickel DB for them as they will be running that defense a lot more than this past year.

9-3 sounds about right, though I wouldn't say "at best"

Should win 10 games against that schedule, might only win 8. UCLA, Stanford, ND, ASU, and Arizona could all get them. Dodged a bullet with no Oregon.

They also don't go to Corvallis... which has been a nightmare for them.

I bet they lose to one of Fresno St., Utah, Wazzou, and Oregon St.

2-2 at best against ND, Stanford, UCLA, and ASU.

Pullard, Allen, and Shaw all coming back. Great news though that Reynolds from Stanford is going pro.

USC just dropped Shay Fields as a commit. Another spot open for them.

officially visiting to colorado this weekend and cal next...easy way for them to cut ties....surely was told he'd be dropped if he visited so that doesn't make them look like the bad guy

at least that's the theory i'm going with.

Did he not like Kiffin? Or did he not like what he believes Kiffin will do on offense?

That would explain why he went to Bama and not USC in the first place.
