I think early reports were California, not sure if that was ever made official.

All I've ever read is that season 2 is Cali. I'm rewatching season 1 and cannot get over how great it is. It'll be hard to top season 1, but the writer director duo is definitely one I can get behind.

Yes, it's Cali. Two more leads or heavy support actors will join. Rumors are Elizabeth Moss and Taylor Kitsch.

As we previously speculated, Vince Vaughn will be portraying career criminal Frank Semyon. The character is said to be “in danger of losing his empire when his move into legitimate enterprise is upended by the murder of a business partner.” Colin Farrell, on the other hand, will star as Ray Velcoro, one of the three main police officers. Velcoro is a “compromised detective whose allegiances are torn between his masters in a corrupt police department and the mobster who owns him.”

Regarding Moss... aside from Mad Men, Top of the Lake was a good miniseries and she was central to it's talent.

More on the plot...

Plot details have been revealed for True Detective season 2 along with the news that TV network HBO is considering Mad Men's Elisabeth Moss for the female lead.

Following the news earlier today that Vince Vaughn is in talks for a lead role in the second season of Nic Pizzolatto's small screen crime drama, The Wrap has revealed the storyline.

“The second season of True Detective will follow the death of Ben Caspar, the corrupt City Manager of a fictional California city who’s found brutally murdered amidst a potentially groundbreaking transportation deal that would forever change the freeway gridlock in California.

Three law enforcement officers from different cities and branches of the government are tasked with finding out who did it. They soon discover their investigation has much broader and darker implications than they initially thought.

Caspar’s 52-year-old corpse is found on a lonely stretch of the PCH near Big Sur - his eye burned out, genitals cut off and satanic symbols etched on his chest. It turns out he had a penchant for rough sex and may have been involved in the occult.”

The Wrap also reports Elisabeth Moss (pictured) is under consideration to play one of the three law enforcers, Ani Bezzerides. Described as "a tough, no-nonsense Monterey sheriff whose troubled upbringing has driven her to gambling and alcohol" it could make up for criticism of the first season's lack of strong female characters.

If cast, The Wrap reckons Vince Vaughn would play the show's antagonist Frank Semyon. A "former thug-turned-businessman" he's connected with the local mayor and together with their cronies they're trying to push forward the construction of rail links between South and North California and skim off the cash from federal grants.

On Semyon's payroll is bent cop Ray Velcoro. Colin Farrell is in the frame to play the "barely functioning coke-head" who has suffered "years of turmoil in both his personal and professional life" and is battling his ex-wife for custody of their son.

As previously reported Taylor Kitsch is circling the role of the third law enforcer. Military veteran Paul Woodrugh has "seen his own share of violence and destruction" and is now a California Highway Patrol motorcycle officer. When the series begins Woodrugh is "on leave after soliciting oral ex from a beautiful girl he pulls over for drunk driving".

Hmm, Cali will be interesting. Have they said whether it will be one of the bigger cities or a small rural town?

Regardless it will be hard to live up to season 1, but I am pumped nonetheless.

I really can't wait. Collin Ferrell will have my support with anything because of In Bruges, one of my favorite movies. Vince Vaughn I am more iffy on, but being a Notre Dame fan I can give him slack. Elizabeth Moss is a great actress, and Taylor Kitsch is a big name, although I haven't seen him in anything recent. Hopefully a strong female lead will help the show be more balanced. I loved Season 1 and the casting rumors/confirmations have my hyped for Season 2.

So is it going to air at the same time as Game of Thrones? If so I'll probably get HBO for the spring.

Vaughn is actually a pretty good drama actor IMO. I like Ferrell as well. They should be able to carry the show. I'm a big fan of Mad Men and to me Moss can be up and down as an actress. She definitely has the "assets" to carry a role.

Check out Top of the Lake for a closer look at the assets. She does a fine job of acting. Carries the show IMO.

True Detective returns for eight episodes this coming Sunday. A writer for the Variety thinks it falls short of season one. If it's half as good as season one, it should be worth watching.

Pretty hard to equal S1. The chemistry between MM and WH was crazy good. Like you said, even if it's half as good, I'll be more than happy.
It's got a great cast. Even the supporting actors/actresses are pretty impressive.

Vince Vaughn is the bad guy in this one. He's famous for his comedy, but he's usually been stellar in any serious roles he takes on.

Like Woody's dynamic and track record. Interesting choice.
The 20 weeks of GOTs and TD are by far my favorite weeks for TV.

I watch most anything with WH. Both Woody and Vaughn have the ability to take on most any role.

Thoughts?

I thought it was okay. I went into the first episode with the assumption that it would not be anywhere near the same level as season 1, and that seems to be accurate. That being said, there was enough substance to keep me watching. I'm hoping that they are simply "moving the chess pieces into place" and following episodes will start getting things going.

Yeah the first episode of shows like this tends to be more confusing than exciting. But I thought the acting/visuals/music were awesome. We'll see about the plot.

Anyone else think the early scene with the divorce lawyer was something like the interviews with the detectives from season 1 at first? That got me pretty excited but I'm assuming it was done like that on purpose to fool us.

Yup. After seeing that again in this episode, I thought it would be something they would do throughout the entire season. They definitely fooled me

I thought the first episode was a great start and like others have said, this is a chess match and the pieces are being set.

So far, we have:
1. A PO with hatred/drinking issues
2. A PO who clings to a job that provides concrete borders which helps counterbalance an early childhood with no definitive framework.
3. A PO with a death wish who appears to be a "good guy" but may have more percolating beneath the surface.
4. A kingpin attempting to bolster his status and fortune and who obviously doesn't wrestle with morality when it crosses his ambition.
5. A city with corruption issues and...
6. A symbolic corpse that had it's eyes removed which begins the motif guessing game. Was he supposed to be found? Is this a symbolic see no evil?
7. What am I forgetting?

After what Nick P produced in the first season, I'm giving him a long leash to bring everything together. I imagine he's only set the table and not even started to serve the meal.

Was really disappointed with the theme song this year.

Also: Call it a hunch but I'd be willing to bet Aspen didn't do anything to the son's shoes. He probably just stopped wearing them/destroyed them himself because he was getting made fun of. Classic kid move to blame it on some nameless bully. When his dad basically threatened to beat it out of him the kid probably just said a random name. Sucks for Aspen's dad though.

I think e2 will continue to set the table and give us a tiny bit of action. As said above, more than happy to extend a long leash. If it's half as good as s1, I'll be very happy. There's so much opportunity already with all the f'd up characters. Really enjoyed Farrell and Kitsch. McAdams and Reilly are hot. Not a lot to dislike so far. I think VV has the opportunity to show some new depth. It's been a while since he had a good serious role.

I want to know what the hell the McAdams character asked her presumed boyfriend to do that got him all fired up. That whole family is the most intriguing thing about the season for me.

I keep waiting for VV to tell a joke.
