I'd love to see Tommy have unlimited access to 5 star players. The talent at ND just doesn't compare and frankly him getting a bad rap for his 'play calling' at ND is an indictment on what he had to work with here.

Well, Kelly was able to beat Alabama in his first try at LSU. I guess these coaches get tired of getting their teeth kicked in at ND.

I'm going to assume that Coach Saban and his remaining coaching and analysis staff are no fools.

Secondly, I'm going to assume that they have watched the entirety of NDs last couple of seasons play-by-play.

Thirdly, I am going to assume that when they evaluated Tommy's playcalling and play-creativity, they really liked what they saw.

Then they decided, despite all the IE insights available on the Internet, that Tommy was one helluva fine OC candidate.
They decided this rather than the opposite position "Oh Hell This Guy Stinks! We should never give him the Bama offense!"

Now, it absolutely shocks me that the Bama staff and Saban are so incompetent yet compete for Titles every season.
THAT is a very great mystery indeed.

Fortunately for Tommy Bama also got turned down first 4 or 5 times.

For the "this proves Tommy is a gangsta" crowd, I would like to know what other options do you think Saban has?

When you look at many of the best offenses, they have a HC that is heavily involved. Think OSU, USC, Tennesse, etc. Now think of how many other OCs have already moved on this year...too many to list out. There are probably a dozen candidates that have already taken new roles or turned Saban down.

This isn't a Tommy bashing note. I think ND could do far worse than Tommy. But to ignore the impact of the landscape is negligent.

I think he’s a very good play caller and mediocre at every other aspect of being a college coach. He’s made for the NFL.

The optics of him going to Bama + potentially losing Carr are the worst parts of him leaving. We’ll find someone else.

Why would Saban not have other options? Plenty of coaches have been hired away during an offseason only to end up somewhere else before the season started. Alabama OC is probably one of the most attractive positions in all of college football. You have an endless amount of talent to work with, the best HC running the program, and a stellar defense always backing you up on the other side of the ball. It's why a number of coaching careers have been revitalized in Tuscaloosa. I doubt there's been a dozen candidates that have already passed the job up, and I'd be curious who has turned it down already.

Pretty much where I am. I've listened to all the griping about Tommy the past couple of years, but I'm going to assume Saban knows what he's doing and likes what he sees in Tommy, if that's the hire that he makes.

Bruce is crazy, but how wild would that be? Can't see Alabama bringing in a brand new HC with no experience, even if he was a Saban protege. The job probably goes to Dabo still.

Now this...this I could handle. Let Rees learn Saban's ways, then bring him home. Day probably doesn't get fired though, not without someone better lined up. More likely he ends up in the NFL.

Not to bring up what has been said a million times, but Rees and Kelly simply are not “elite” recruiters. Their talent disadvantage is partly their fault

Offensively Rees has brought in better talent since he became OC, especially since BK took off. All things being equal it seems like BK was too hung up on RKGs.

The last guy chip long was a better recruiter than Rees and overall a better OC except unpopular apparently.

 Is that why he left huge holes at WR? RB wasn't much better there for awhile, with the exception of Kyren. Jury is still out on a few of the OL guys he brought in, guys that haven't panned out. Next year's Junior class was Rees' first. Alt, Fisher, Estime, Diggs, Styles, Colzie, Buchner, Thomas, Evans in small samples, a lot of players that have already proven themselves as underclassmen in at least one season or more. That's a pretty damn good first class.

What was Long's best class? Seriously? Look at the 2018, 2019, and 2020 classes. The offensive talent is pretty damn spotty, a handful of decent players in each or maybe just a few guys and that's being generous. The 2020 class was just Mayer and Tyree, unless you want to include Pyne as a win for Long too. Your statement is just silly..

Didn’t people want him fired during the season? So why are people upset? Is it because it’s Alabama?
I think for a lot of people here it's like dating a girl you are about to break up and she breaks up with you first and it's for a guy that can offer her alot more.

I never had a big problem with him, especially since the offense would have been much different with another QB. He had to use the tools he had last year.

Yep, Chip was so good he's now....unemployed? Or something like that? And Tommy is apparently on his way to Bama? Wait, that can't be right. Chip was a better recruiter? So he's a recruiting coordinator where now? Or which recruits has he gotten commitments from in the past two years? And Tommy has received commitments from which QBs over the past year?

What were you saying again?

I'm a Tommy fan but I just don't see him as head coach at a big-time program. Neither Notre Dame or (certainly) Bama.
He'll probably get a shot at some low/mid P5 jobs before long if he keeps doing well, but being the face of a program like that just isn't his game. Dude's a born OC.

It’s sucks for ND but I can see why Tommy would want this, go work for the greatest coach alive and soak everything up. People leave Jobs all the time for that very reason. My main complaint about him leaving is the timing of it all

I can’t help but feel the optics on this if he leaves are terrible. If finances weren’t going to be an issue, it looks bad for an alumni of the program to leave for the same job elsewhere a year after the HC. I know they are different scenarios, but what does it say about the program if the grass is greener elsewhere. Yeah yeah I know it’s Saban and all, but unless there is an underlying issue between MFMF and Rees, this is a bad look to me. If he leaves, best of luck. But damn this one bothers me more than baloney tits leaving last year.

Alabama and ND are farther apart than ND and North Carolina in blue chip ratio. So he will have access to talent he never had and will never have at ND. He can run whatever he wants there without limitations.

Also, his fiance loved Tuscaloosa and the visit. Also, Saban.

The only thing that would keep him at ND would be it is his alma mater, but at a certain point that stops mattering.
