They're hoping to have something announced today, and since this is the only smoke that's been out there, it's probably a done deal.

If there isn't an announcement today, it means there's a hangup on when/how they both transition from Ohio State.

You guys are letting your disappointment with the season get the best of you.

New offers are going out on the recruiting trail now, which means the staff is at work, which also likely means that they have at least something to tell the new offers on defense about the future of the unit.

Saw a quote from BK that he was going to focus on recruiting up until the dead period(12/12) and then he would turn his attention to the DC search.

Good move by both parties. You're up and coming coach didn't land a big job so get your pay day this coming year (Fleck) and secure a good buyout for whatever school poaches him next year (WMU).

plus there is a huge shop window about to open for fleck with his 3 of his next 4 opponents being Wisconsin, USC and Michigan State. If his teams perform well in these games then it will go a long way to boosting his stock.

Makes zero sense unless you are recruiting offensive recruits only. What defensive recruit would be interested when they have no idea who will be coaching them or scheme that will be used?

I would think he would want the horse in place first.

You still gotta maintain contact. This happened after 2013 as well. BK had taken over Nyles Morgan's recruitment and was still talking to him, even though there was no DC in place. It's just that we shouldn't necessarily expect any new defensive recruits to commit without seeing the scheme. Graham is already super comfortable with ND and so is Paschal.

Houston has promoted offensive coordinator Major Applewhite to become the school’s next head coach, the school announced Friday morning.

A source told 247Sports that Applewhite won the job over interim coach Todd Orlando and Alabama offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin.

The 38-year-old Applewhite had been the Cougars’ offensive coordinator the past two seasons under Tom Herman. Prior to that, Applewhite spent six seasons as an assistant coach at Texas, where he earlier set several school records as an All-Big 12 quarterback.

Kiffin was at one point thought to be the leader, sources told 247Sports as late as Thursday, but Houston administrators ultimately went with an internal candidate due to hesitation regarding Kiffin’s ability to bond with Texas high school coaches.

Continuity was also important after Herman and his staff led the Cougars to a 22-4 record in two seasons. Applewhite’s offenses finished an averaged of third in the American conference in scoring and sixth in yards per play.

Houston (9-3) plays Mountain West champ San Diego State (10-3) in the Dec. 17 Las Vegas Bowl. Applewhite will coach the team in the bowl game, per the release.

Kelly is coaching not only for his job but for his career. If he bombs next year, he is going to be fired and have difficulty finding a P5 job. I, and many many others, have little faith in him making substantial changes. However he is up against the wall now and I think he realizes he doesn't have a choice.
