So is there no serious chatter about ND negotiating for new a DC? Either Jack S and Kelly are doing a really good job of keeping things hush-hush.....or they aren't talking to any candidates.

Kelly is coaching not only for his job but for his career. If he bombs next year, he is going to be fired and have difficulty finding a P5 job. I, and many many others, have little faith in him making substantial changes. However he is up against the wall now and I think he realizes he doesn't have a choice.

apologies might have spoke too soon.

It legitimately seems like UC has no idea what to do among two or three candidates, so they're going to have all the heavy hitters meet on Sunday to talk about a final decision.

From what I've heard, they've got numbers in place for Fickell, which is why negotiations were being reported, but there is a push for another candidate(s) that is still pretty strong coming from somewhere.

Wouldn't blame him one bit considering Kelly seems to favor Denbrock as a playcaller. BK might be one the worst staff managers in all of CFB.

Is Sanford is interested, I dont think Ed Warriner being there or not being there would make any difference.

It does, though, because Warriner is their current offensive coordinator. Unless you're saying that they would replace Warriner with Sanford if Sanford wanted in, which I don't think would be accurate.

If I am not mistaken, Tom Herman was Co-OC with Warriner when he was there.

Plus, Urbie hired Schiano as DC even with Luke Fickell being there.

I guess IDC if Stanford leaves, other than I do not think Phil Jurkevic would like it. BK doesn't use Stanford. He's just like sitting there watching BK make poor decisions with Denbrock running the offense.

On a completely unrelated note... I wonder where Mark Helfricht (sp?) ends up?

I would think he would be a valuable commodity as an OC.

The rapid unraveling of the ball of yarn is imminent. I cannot believe Kelly's perceived/actual ineptitude regarding staff. Big League type stuff is happening all around college football right now yet we are still running tryouts for 9th and 10th grade JV. Maybe there's some magic taking place behind the scenes, however after this past season, my gut says not a chance. Let's just sit back and count on the cronies to take us to the promised land. Thanks so much BK for your stellar service in year 7.

At this point, BK would be lucky if Urban didnt steal his lunch money, give him an atomic wedgie and stuff him in a locker.

Jesus, if that ain't the truth. How embarrassing.

If the rumor is true, and as if we needed another reason to question Kelly's thinking. Now we have Urban wanting one of our coaches to call his offense and we don't let him call our own.

Incredible

Word out there is that UCLA will make a run at Sanford as well for its vacant OC position. Kind of disconcerting as it seems other schools think he's poachable.

To be fair, when haven't our coaches been poachable in recent years?

True, some have gone on to HC jobs, and that's understandable, but I'm talking about the few that have done mostly lateral moves.

Has someone been straight poached by a "lateral" program?

Meyer and Saban are the guys in college football right now. So if you hit the ceiling at ND, but don't have the pedigree to get an OC or DC job yet, it makes perfect sense to get that on your resume. In other words, position Coach at Ohio State or Alabama is a better launching point than ND or any where else right now.

Also, if you are stagnating, a lateral hire to a situation that fits you better with a great HC (Stoops, Sweeny, etc) might be a good solution for everyone.

If UCLA gets Sanford, it will be because Kelly isn't really using him as an OC, not because ND assistants are easy pickings.

This is sort of what I'm trying to get at. Sanford shouldn't be poachable by ANY program for a lateral move unless ND isn't giving him what he wants. This is starting to remind me of Alford's move in that he jumped ship largely because he was getting passed over for expanded coaching responsibilities by coaches from Kelly's inner circle. I could be way off base here, but no one is exactly banging down the door for Denbroock the way they seem to be for Sanford.

Florida Atlantic in talks with Lane Kiffin to become head coach - FootballScoop
By Zach Barnett - December 9, 2016

Clearly an issue would be economics of the deal. LSU is thought to be offering to make Kiffin one of college football’s highest paid coordinators with a multi-year deal likely to be worth more than $5 million. At FAU, Charlie Partridge made approximately $600,000. Logically, one would think a hire with the name recognition that Lane Kiffin carries would allow FAU to raise additional funds allowing them to get around the $1 million annual mark; but that remains to be seen.

If Brian Kelly has any balls he would name Mike Sanford the OC right now and give him full control of the offense. But it's Brian Kelly
