I've consistently argued that if the process was as slow as it's been because "the committee meeting is already on the calendar" and "they are just like any other students," then ND was being self-righteous and ridiculous.

But if they actually did something that deserves punishment and the process has been moving as fast as reasonably possible from an insider's perspective, then it is what it is.

In other words, there better be a good reason that this is taking so long (acknowledging that a good reason might exist)...

This is got to be some kind of record. No rumored updates, conspiracy theories or threats of ferguson in the past 32 minutes.

I see where you are coming from in that scenario, but are they really going to hold these innocent kid's out longer for potentially not playing "whistle blower" on a teammate? They have already missed the opener and if this is the case, holding them out any longer is excessive. I mean Tommy Rees missed less time assaulting a cop on a drunken bender. It's a travesty these kid's are not playing against Michigan if this is indeed the case.

Pretty sure Tommy's case was more nuanced than that...

If we beat Michigan and some/all get reinstated next week, it will be old news.

If we DON'T beat Michigan and some/all get reinstated next week, stand by....

But seriously, how can anybody at this point believe any of the 5 is going to be exonerated? I suspect this was open/shut by the time Kelly was informed of the investigation on Aug. 14. I can't imagine holding the press conference on Aug.15 if this wasn't for all practical purposes a done deal. If it wasn't, then it's conclusively proven that the President and Athletic Director of this great university are idiots (and does anyone really believe that?).

The self-flagellation going on all over the 'net on ND fan sites is pitiable.

Win the f***ing game tomorrow night and it's all good.

Amen! Win the game tomorrow, get the players back next week, and take it out on Purdue.

Maybe there was movement that predicated no announcement this week. They may have been told that their punishment is time missed through this week and they will be reinstated Sunday or Monday.

I'm fine with nothing really getting out and reported. If stuff was being leaked, misinformation, rumors and speculation would be everywhere and the media would have a field day hammering us.

This is true, I meant it more like "no change in their status"... you're right that there totally could've been some stuff going on behind the scenes last night or today.

I would say It myself, but I'm just not that good with writing.. Keith Arnold pretty much sums this thread up with a few good dagger's! He does have inside info as far as the inside is concerned.

"So while many fret about some alleged injustice being put on the in-limbo players, it’s also a reminder that the blame for this delay isn’t on any academic bureaucracy, but rather the five students who put themselves in the situation to begin with."

Logical fallacy.

Players are responsible for their actions, administration is responsible for theirs. The players "putting themselves in this situation" on no level excuses or explains this administration acting like fucking Comcast with their level of incompetence, inaction, and inefficiency.

If a person is arrested and charged with a crime, but then the courts hold them without bail while taking perpetually delaying their trial for years on end, and then the person is found innocent... would we all not agree that would be injustice? That presupposes innocence, but in this non criminal case the players being limbo is preventing them from transferring, which is an injustice even if they're guilty.

If they're innocent then what situation did they put themselves in?

Right? It's like when the cops round up a whole bunch of persons of interest... but instead of cutting them all loose after questioning they were to say "nah, we're going to hold you in this jail cell for a couple weeks while we run down all the other leads, and then after that we're going to hold you here another couple weeks just because we can't be bothered to rubber stamp you as innocent."

Clearly, this would be unacceptable in our society. So ND administration apologists have no leg to stand on.

I have defended Notre Dame for staying faithful to whatever process they had in place to deal with this situation, and for not changing the procedure just because there were football players involved. I've also said that complaints that the process takes too long were probably fair but not all that relevant to this instance, because you can't expect them to change what is probably a longstanding process just because some football fans think it is taking too long.

But, having said all of that, this has officially taken too long. I was willing to be understanding because school wasn't in session when this started and I felt it made sense to give the university time to get back to normal operations before they could be expected to deal with this situation. I was willing to make excuses for the administration up to a point, but to have this week come and go without any determination is inexcusable.

the system is bloated and ineffective, it cannot get business of the day done in a timely matter. time to clean house, and get updated to the 21st century. Ultimately, this inefficiency translates to student achievement, its time for new leadership.

Not correct with my research

This is kinda why it's so hard to believe some of us are fans of the university as well as the reason ND is so cherished, but hated for the reasons some just can't get a grasp on

My new working theory is that they did it and the university knows it but can't prove it. Missing the Michigan game is a way of punishing them without punishing them.

It's like being unable to prove a murder case so you hit the guy with all kinds of drug charges. Or Al Capone getting convicted of tax evasion.

Ha this is pretty much exactly where I am. I have been calling for patience, but at this point it is officially difficult for me to imagine why this could reasonably take this long.

Minus a confession, or turning in the same assignment as another student, it's vritually impossible to PROVE anything here.

Even send an email that says "here's the essay" you could argue you wrote it, gave it to her on a flash drive, and she just edited it. How do you prove otherwise? Especially when this shit happened 2-3 years ago.

The whole situation is just stupid.

It's very possible that the College of Arts and Letters didn't even have an honesty committee in place when this all started. Thus, rather than this being an issue of scheduling or rescheduling a meeting, they first had to nominate and vote on who would even be in the committee in the first place.

Just a thought.

Exactly. No one is going to put "yo write this paper for me and schedule a BJ in for this afternoon. Kthanx go irish. -(player)" in an email. It's gotta be impossible to prove any of that.

Talked to someone who has background agrees with you. You would be surprised how many people do. Maybe not!

There are several plausible theories about what may or may not be happening with the process at the moment, but the fact of the matter is that we don't know what we don't know. None of the early conjecture was accurate based on ND's formal statement to the media, and there's been no credible leaks since that statement. So all we know for certain is what ND has publicly stated. No matter how plausible the theory at this point, it's all conjecture and speculation. Best thing to do would be to root for the team on the field and hope for the best for the five suspended kids. It's plain to see that the university is not at all bothered by the impatience of its fan base.

Yeah, initially I thought that the process was playing out normally and people were unfairly expecting ND to take extraordinary steps to speed it up. But now I feel like it is going extraordinarily slowly for some reason, and I just want it to move at a reasonable pace.

ND, don't make exceptions for the football players. Don't. But do make every effort to resolve this thing expeditiously. Every student deserves that, and I am starting to wonder if these players are getting that basic courtesy.
