We need an "IE Digest" thread. No discussion allowed, just actual news. You can only post there if you have a Commitment, Decommitment, Injury, Suspension/Reinstatement/Investigation, or University news. Conversations can continue in those topics' respective threads, but it would be nice one-stop shopping for someone popping in for actual updates.

This is an amazing idea. If I were a mod and could delete posts in order to keep the thread a true digest, I would create this thread right now.

Or flowing banner for news only.

This.

Or perhaps Mods can update the first post of important threads.

If there's real news on this subject, it won't be hard to find here. If you open this thread and see nothing but off-topic posts, you can rest assured you haven't missed anything.

We have to vacate all of your wins now that we know.

Wins?

What wins???

Just look at my "record."

Oh. I'd apologize for all the (seemingly) meaningless spacing but I caught on early that a certain amount of screen real estate is dedicated to each and every post, regardless of length.

With a background in photography, film and video I (all too often?) take advantage of "white space."

Well there was that one girl you dated back in the 60's, you established that 'win' with at least one of your long winded yarls... surely there on limitations on your side here though.

Yup.

My freshman year I participated in a major academic scandal.

I occupied my roommate's assigned auditorium seat in Emil T. Hoffman's Chemistry 101 (or some such thing) so he could head home to Maryland for Thanksgiving without suffering a dreaded "non-attendance" mark on his record. Minions checked off the numbered seats that were occupied.

I should (probably) have turned in the two of us – as nefarious a cabal as I've ever seen!

As an intro to his lecture that morning, Emil T asked all in attendance to look to the left and right andnto introduce one another. Sure enough, I couldn't find anyone within arm's length in any direction who was the student he was supposed to be.

I felt off the hook and free to be me.

There were no "wins" in the '60s for me. None that I remember, anyway. It was sooo long ago.

I don't think that dreams count ...

....thereby lending credence to the 80% theory, right?

Texts can be infinitely long, that should suit your verbose vocabulary nicely.

See.....this is always what prevented me from texting dick pics......now that I know that everything will fit, so to speak, it's a brave new world.

OFD's Jim Miesle just published an article titled "The Cheating 'Scandal.'" Nothing new, but a good recap of what little we do know and how the media has reacted to it.

And on a lighter note, SBNation's RunHomeJack/cjanerun01/@celebrityhottub just published an article titled "IS THIS TEAM SCREWED: NOTRE DAME:"

After reaching the national title game in 2012, Notre Dame fell back to earth, so to speak, in 2013. They beat Michigan State (MSU's only loss and what had to be the most pass-interference penalties ever used in one game), but they lost to Michigan, Oklahoma, Stanford, and Pitt. Yes, Pitt. Really. Playing without Everett Golson (and with my second-favorite Notre Dame quarterback, Tommy Rees), Notre Dame had some struggles on offense, but regressing from a 12-1 season is bound to happen.

Golson is back this year after learning some life lessons or whatever, but Notre Dame will be breaking in two new coordinators (Mike Denbrook on offense, Brian VanGorder on defense) while trying to gain some consistency on both sides of the ball. That job got a hell of a lot harder when the school announced last week that three starters and one role player were being held out of practice while being investigated as part of an cheating scandal. A very inspiring cheating scandal, but a cheating scandal nonetheless.

But the problems for Notre Dame go deeper than "our quarterback last year had the innate ability to heave the ball into the waiting hands of the opposing team" and "despite our record-breaking television contract and Touchdown Jesus we are basically the same assholes as you, we just pay a lot of money to go to school in a dry county like a bunch of dang yahoos".

Notre Dame has a fatal case of ACC Wasting Syndrome.

See, because Notre Dame wants to remain independent while joining a conference (like the girl who wants to date you but also date other people and never looks you in the eyes in public because of 'appearances' or something), Notre Dame's schedule makes absolutely no sense. In 2014, Notre Dame will play Michigan, Syracuse, Stanford, Florida State, Arizona State, Louisville, and USC. Their home schedule is bizarre. It's like if the ACC took DMT, but without the visions of the afterlife.

Notre Dame will lose to Syracuse and beat Florida State. Notre Dame will beat Stanford and lose to Louisville. Notre Dame will win a national title but lose it because they had an ineligible player who was also a big red dog. This is Notre Dame.

They will have five-star recruits commit holding penalties on crucial third downs. They will have a wide receiver of doom (I will someday find where you live, Golden Tate). They will lose when they should win, win when they should lose, and make NBC nearly unwatchable for four hours every Saturday. They will be excellent and middling and good and bad all at once, and they will go 9-4 forever.

Using only cold logic, is Notre Dame doomed? If by "doomed," you mean "bound for a meh bowl game," then yes. If you mean "doomed" as in "career-ending season for Brian Kelly", then no. Notre Dame has too many weapons on both sides of the ball and too many obvious opportunities for wins on the schedule to fall too far.

Asking only the Catholic woman deep inside your soul who still gets a little anxious during Holy Week, is Notre Dame doomed? No, but you certainly are. You could have had it all as a Latin professor, but instead you chose the bright lights and seedy fame of writing for a sports blog. Shame.

Every single person reading this board knows the above to be factually true. You know it. I know it. Every Irish fan in the world knows it.

Never would I have thought, when i was younger, that of all my teams, ND Football would be the one I'd come to view as totally snake bit and wheel spinning, but you are right.

Interesting conundrum....would you rather beat Florida State and lose to Syracuse...or beat Syracuse and lose to Florida State?

Beat FSU and lose to Syracuse every time. I'm going to the Syracuse game and I'd still take that trade.

True, but then you hear the argument that FSU was overrated, and we've once again lost to Syracuse. Either scenario brings good and bad situations.

Beat FSU/ Lose to Syracuse is by far the better scenario. Even if people argue that FSU was overrated, they're still the defending national champions. Might take some luster off our best win, but it's still a damned impressive pelt on our wall. Once you get into the middle of the FBS and lower, the average fan esteems every win equally (read: not much at all).

What we will never do, is smear Syracuse (like we should), then lose to free seafood u in a hard-pitched battle by less than a FG.

Cause, you know, that'd be the actual scenario where a loss in 1 of those 2 games wouldn't hurt as badly come post-season.

What bothers me about the university's handling of this situation is the timing of the player's removal from practice, etc. It is going on a week now and these four guys have been in limbo. It is possible that some (or even all) of these players are ultimately found to be innocent of these allegations. If that is the case, how has justice been served by preventing them from practicing and competing for spots on the starting roster?

Being that a hearing could not be convened quickly because of the unavailability of student representatives on the panel, shouldn't the situation have been kept quiet and consequences delayed until a judgement had been rendered?

If a player violated the honor code, give him the proper consequence. However, consequencing everyone suspected of involvement without going through due process, is in my mind, wrong.
