Something Kelly said in the last week made me think they'd still be used even if they found out Friday. Maybe I'm just holding out hope.

I'd imagine that'd depend on their involvement in the "scandal".
I'd hope that if they were found guilty or whatnot that Kelly would at least not start them.

So, to engage is mere and discouraged speculation, there's no chance we get them for this week. right? A week from Saturday is the earliest (penalties aside).

Possible they'd be cleared tomorrow/this evening... which would make them available, but unlikely they'd contribute more than a handful of snaps.

just more speculation by you, and claiming it to be fact. you're making my point so easy and obvious. nice try though, buddy.

Of course he is speculating. You are discussing a silly hypothetical about the glee club of ND singing at the White House without its tenors and whether or not Father Jenkins would attend. How could his thoughts be anything but speculation?

Hey... even a handful of snaps would help. It would allow us to play Riggs in nickel at least some of the game. That would be extremely helpful.

Yeah, I don't remember his exact words but he seemed to leave the door open - which is what gave me hope for a relatively imminent decision. It's hard to see how news would come down in time to practice today and only one day of meetings/practice doesn't seem like reasonable preparation.

Plus, I would expect some kind of leaking in the build up to an announcement and the rumors on announcement times have all run their course.

Looks like this is going to be a full three-phase bungling...

Phase 1: The early PR disaster
Phase 2: The lack of alacrity in getting a resolution
Phase 3: Going overboard to punish/self-sanction... gut feeling we vacate wins, just because. No info.

I don't think this Mendoza guy understands the ND process. Maybe Wizard could email him the rules and regs?

IDK why Ishaq couldn't play every play. I know it's a BIT more complicated than this, but for a DE it's recognize run pass, rush left or right.

You're 4 years in. Tuck your dick in and tackle that puke bucket #98.

If they installed blitz packages this week, and he wasn't there for that installation, then he'd only be effective in "standard" sets. But you're right, of all the people he'd be the most apt to play serious snaps if physically ready. Russell could too.

DaVaris would be trickier but could probably play a handful of snaps.

At his Tuesday press conference he said if they were cleared by Wednesday noon.

Doesn't mean he wouldn't even if later, but this is all he said on Tuesday.

It is far more complicated than this. You can't have players out there improvising on the defensive line. At this point, conditioning would be an issue too. These guys haven't strapped a helmet on in weeks. There's a difference between being in shape and being in game shape.

I bet they've kept in shape. They don't have to play every play, either.

And it's more complicated, but not FAR more complicated IMO. We wouldn't be asking him to drop into coverage, so it's tackle the dude with the ball, stunt right/left, don't over pursue.

This. They can certainly be used stuationally, even if all they get is the Friday walkthrough practice.

There's no reason why KVR can't be thrown out there in a strict man-to-man on 3rd down or in a Cover-4 on a 3rd and long. Mentally, there shouldn't be anything unusual thrown at him in those situations.

Same thing for Ishaq if the coaches think he can be utilized rushing the passer on 3rd and longs or run-stuffing on a big 3rd and 1 or 4th and 1.

Ditto for DD if the coaches want him to run a Go route to push a safety to his side of the field, or are running a simple WR screen play.

Probably too much thinking going on with Safety, and I think they need the reps for ST play for the coaches to trust Hardy/Moore after one day of a walkthrough practice.

And not to be too Pollyanna-ish, but I'd speculate (without basis) that their presence would provide a big emotional lift.

SMDH. I take it you never played defensive line.

Ishaq could probably play on some third and long plays where it is more about straight up rushing the passer.

This. These guys can be thrown in there in situations where there isn't much thinking involved. If these guys were all coming back from ankle injuries and we're cleared tomorrow, we'd expect them to play. They are certainly behind the curve mentally, but they can still be used out there sparingly.

I've never played DL, but I've played and watched football. I truly believe Ishaq can handle every DL call that's not 'drop in coverage'.

He's been doing this for 3 years. DLs aren't asked to disect an offense, just to take the correct gap and beat their man (or contain if we're trying to not over persue).

Only one of those takes thought and it's determined before the play starts.

I wonder if "infractions" for insulting other members are being given out to everyone who's come after me in this thread, or if I'm the only one who's earned that honor.

That would definitely get Gardner's attention. A little "Goodbye Horses"...

They'd use him like they did in his first season, "DD, go down to the red Chevy and slant in."

I don't recall routes and reads being his strongpoints with regular practice and PT but his presence on the field would make coverage tougher on the defenders.

P.S. Perhaps I should update that gameplay instruction based on Rice, "DD, go downfield 50 yards and wait for the ball."

In keeping with earlier literary references I'll proffer Samuel Beckett's Waiting for Godot.
