so is the CW that:

ALL current commits stay committed
if get 3 more commits (Williams, Farrar and. _____ ) in 2015 then we can offer 6 5th years back?

It assumes keeping all current commits then adding Williams, ESB and a safety (most likely Farrar). Then there will be room to ask 6-7 5th year guys back.

Gotta figure there'll be at least one transfer/flunkout by summer (and would think the staff might know who that'll be). And maybe an injury or two, right?

So:
Golson (pending spring ball)
Carlisle
Martin
Ishaq
Grace
Schmidt
Farley

If we wind up short maybe Carlisle goes (though he'd be nice to have as an option at RB). And if extra spots, Councell, Hegarty and maybe Rabasa are next in line?

BK announced last year's 5Y players during his NSD press conference. Has anyone heard if BK is expected to announce this year's 5Y players tomorrow?

Assuming Baratti goes on a medical scholarship and there is no further attrition and that ESB signs, I think we have room for five fifth years.

That's a basement figure. Attrition happens.

I think Kelly just said in his presser that there may be some movements after NSD. We'll see what happens I guess. Based on what Kelly just said it sounds like possible transfer(s) into the program may happen after NSD. Saying possibly more than 1 transfer in.

Wow, 5 spots available for 5th years, and we possibly have transfers that could come in? Who gets the 5th years then?

If I had to guess, I'd go with Nick Martin, Joe Schmidt, Matthias Farley (Depending on if we have a transfer in at Safety I guess), Jarrett Grace if everything goes well through spring (Kelly had lots of good things to say about his numbers in the presser), and then probably Golson unless he's out. Kelly did say they will go to the first day of classes to get to 85, so if Golson is out maybe Ishaaq is in, or one of these potential transfers? Sounds like Ishaaq's situation is complicated, Russell's situation seemed more fluid.

Either way, baring late transfers (Which seems to happen one way or another), we should be able to get to 85 in theory...but I'll believe it when I see it.

I wrote a few months ago that I hoped BK would invite all 5Y players back for Spring practice with the understanding they were competing for a limited number of spots with the opportunity to transfer elsewhere if they didn't make the cut. This would help protect against attrition due to spring practice injuries, post-spring transfers, etc. I thought it worked in theory, but wasn't very confident it's a path BK would go down. After hearing him talk about it today, I wouldn't be surprised if that's what he did.

Most kids don't want to go into spring ball wondering, or competing for a potential spot. If they can lock themselves into a guarantee early, why risk it.

I don't disagree, but all of the 5Y candidates have seen what happens to NDs scholarship numbers between NSD and the end of the spring semester. Spots suddenly open up. Why sit around in the spring waiting to transfer when you can try to earn a roster spot during spring ball and/or see where you stand after and assess your options then?

I'd like to think BK and team know what will likely open up. Just like ND will try to lock in a transfer or two, other schools are doing the same. They don't always have the ability to wait. Don't get me wrong, if I were in the position, I'd wan to stay at ND, but I'd also have to mitigate risk if a graduate degree and guaranteed PT was on the line.

Trouble is, they're not only competing with the existing players on our roster, but also potentially with 5Y transfers in to our program, and with other potential 5Y transfers to whatever programs they themselves might go to. And there's only so many spots.
It's musical chairs. I can see why some would prefer the certainty of a place to land elsewhere.

A big 5Y question mark answered today with the news of Hegary transferring. Adding Avery Sebastian to the OP, we have 4 spots left on the roster.

You have to think Golson, Martin, Schmidt and Farley are locks. That means no Amir, Grace or Ishaq (unless we lose someone in the spring).

I like the idea of bringing in a graduate transfer when we have spots available (eg Riggs last year), but I don't like the idea of turning away guys like Amir and Grace for Sebastian.

It will be interesting to see if BK announces we lost someone else to medical, opening up another spot for Grace and/or Amir, probably in that order IMO.

I really hope we don't push out any underclassmen to make room for another 5Y. That's essentially oversigning and we're better than that.

you do when it is a position of need....ishaq screwed himself, grace unfortunately got hit by the injury bug and Amir well looked decent this past year....the BIG PICTURE is that this always works itself out....BK was EXTREMELY clear in indicating that he has until the end of Aug to get to 85...injuries happen---also Golson basically stated if he isn't the starter he is looking elsewhere

Yea, I understand why they brought in Sebastian, and it's probably in the best interest of the team, but I don't like turning away guys who have given a lot to the program for a player transferring in from another program. Just doesn't feel right.

We just lost a returning starter on the OL due to numbers. The numbers always work itself out because it's the rules, but there are consequences. Ask Hegarty. He won't be the last one. Amir or Grace are next unless BK is willing to take a gamble that someone will get hurt in spring ball.

Agree on Ishaq. He'll get in if we lose some guys and I think he and KVR are what BK was referring to when saying it will take til August to get to 85.

Since Brooklyn's last update (2/4/15) which had us at 80 scholarship players, we added Sebastian for 81. At this point, we could take four fifth years.

ND has nine potential fifth years, so, counting them, we sit at ninety going into spring camp.

Those candidates are:

Nick Martin
Joe Schmidt
Everette Golson
Matthias Farley
Amir Carlisle
Jarrett Grace
Ben Councell
Anthony Rabasa
Chase Hounshell

Of the other Seniors who were potential fifth years:

Matthew Hegarty and Eilar Hardy - transferring for their fifth years
Jalen Brown and Josh Atkinson - graduating
Conor Hanratty - retired due to medical issues

Big difference - in my book at least - between "pushing out" an underclassman and telling a 5Y like Hegarty he'll need to switch positions if he wants another year. Also it's not just BK taking the gamble. At some level, the decision's also up to Amir and Grace and any other potential 5Ys. They can stick around in the hopes of sticking here, or go somewhere else to secure a spot for next fall. No hard feelings either way.

That pretty much leaves 6 players for 4 spots. Councell just couldn't stay healthy for a while and doesn't really have a spot in BVG's defense. Rabasa has been at best a solid backup and Hounshell really couldn't stay healthy.

The 4 spots are guaranteed to Golson (if he stays), Martin, Schmidt and Farley. Kelly may take a chance and keep Grace and Carlisle, but that runs the risk of going over 85.

Does that 81 number include Baratti who seems to be back and 100%?

Baratti and VanGorder are part of the 81 (although OFD say it's really 82).

I get it, and agree with it. What I don't like is giving that 5th year to an outsider over a guy who has given 4 years to ND. The graduate transfer route is a great option when there are spots available, not when there is a logjam of 5Y options from your own program. Just my opinion.

Huge difference. Let the 5Y compete for spots amongst themselves.

The difference between the OP and OFD is MVG. He is included in OFD's count, but not the OP, which I think is more accurate than OFD's count.

What about Ishaq Williams? I see it as 7 players for 4 spots (would become 5 in Baratti gets a medical redshirt). Didn't Kelly also indicate their would be a couple of transfers in (i.e. not just Avery Sebastian).

I feel really bad for Grace. I was critical of his angles and pass coverage when was healthy. Just can't imagine him coming back skronger after that injury. I was at that game...it was brutal.

Looking at the scholarship numbers (including all the fifth years), we currently have thirty-nine on Offense, forty-eight on Defense and three on Special Teams.

Without Counsell, Grace, Rabasa and Hounshell, the Irish would be at forty-four on Defense. With two less LBs (Counsell and Grace), ND would have twelve LBs. With one less DE (Rabasa), DE would be at eight. With one less DT (Hounshell), DT would be at nine.

So neither DL nor LB are positions of need.

As for transfers, not considering transfers for fifth years, 2014 saw only one undergraduate transfer (Sykes). 2013, however, saw four undergraduates transfers (Ferguson, Neal, Kiel, Badger). 2012 saw three undergraduate transfers (Shepard, Lynch, Prestwood). I think 2015 will be a lot like 2014 with minimal undergrad transfers.
