There is just no reason to take a 5th year transfer coming off three injury laden seasons and an ACL tear! That's pretty desperate.

Not really. They have depth issues with mostly young players on the roster, and more DE graduating after this coming season. So they needed a vet filler who 1) has productive playing time and will see the field as an experienced player 2) can lead the younger guys for a year while they mature. Perfect scenario.

84 players plus a player with a bad knee and some promise is still better than 84 players.

Wut? Why? Because he's taking somebody's spot?

Hell, if he never played a game snap, he would be worth the practice team position alone. It's not desperate, it's simply adding another player. A player by the way, has a super high ceiling if healthy. If he's not, then oh well. We don't lose anything by having him.

Yep, and even if he plays in 6 games, that's 6 games of veteran production. He was a top talent in his class. If he can stay healthy it'd be a hell of a pickup.

The ACL is common enough for players to come back from and his previous injury was a broken hand. As said by others this is a solid deal and could be exceptional (assuming all goes through)

if the kid brother Cam is somehow involved as part of it, this could turn into a situation very close to the Armstead brothers couple years ago...

That's interesting... Cam committed to Stanford a month ago, but heck... he could play a year with his brother.

Maybe things have changed as our RB board has changed quite a bit since Cameron's OV but at that time he wasn't a take. And if the staff thinks they can get Dexter Williams or Cronkite, I'm not sure he would be now either.

To be fair a month ago many people though we were in a good position with Jones.

I'd be pumped if we got dexter williams. He's damn near soso and jones in my book.

People complaining about acquiring the CAL kid is crazy when they actually beat Northwestern this season lol. ND's defense gave up 43 pts to CAL's 24 against them. Beggar's can't be chooser's if you are losing games and getting dominated at recruiting DE's.

2011 with ND as a finalist...
Jordan Prestwood, come on down!

Seriously though :
Scarlett, Burton, Huggins... What about Bennett Okotcha?

If he can get into Notre Dame grad school, I would have to assume he could go there too.

This very well may be a sign of where our RB recruiting is at the moment. If NSD was today, does anyone feel confident that we land Soso, Williams or Cronkite? I certainly do not. With Adams already on the board, maybe this 2 for 1 would be a "bird in hand" scenario.

Bennett is at a DII school I believe. So yes he flamed out. He was a Cam's boy too. Was surprised he decommitted.

Honestly would be very surprised if we landed none of them. Soso was a pipedream, but Mora's possible departure could very easily land him here. Cronkrite and Williams are both very realistic chances if Soso decides to head to UCLA regardless, Cronkrite more than likely. He was looking at ND very hard and with Jones out of the picture, there's an open slot for them.

RE: Scarlett. A guy coming off that many injuries may not be ideal, but after the back half of this season I don't know why we wouldn't line up all the experienced DLs we possibly can, especially if it's a one-year rental that allows our young guys time to develop.

Same thing happened to us in 2013 as well. Stack up on DL!

Of the guys listed on the OP, I'm hoping for French or Scarlett. Both seem like they could be very good DE's for us. Preferably French. The dude is just insanely athletic, but I don't see how he'd leave Oregon after winning a Nat'l Title. What does he major in?

When he was still in HS:

Central Catholic defensive end Brennan Scarlett, one of the nation's top senior football recruits, will miss the rest of the Class 6A playoffs after aggravating an injury in the team's first-round win over North Medford last week.

Scarlett, who suffered a broken collarbone Sept. 17 against Jesuit and had surgery to repair it Sept. 22, returned to action last week. But he felt pain in the collarbone after playing two series in the first quarter, left the game and did not come back.

Scarlett had his collarbone examined this week and learned that the metal plate inserted during surgery was bent.

“It's not broken, it's just irritated,” said Central Catholic coach Steve Pyne, whose eighth-ranked Rams (8-2) play host to South Salem (7-3) in the round of 16 on Friday night. “The doctors have recommended that he just shut it down, let it heal completely and try again next fall.”

Another surgery is a possibility, but extended rest is more likely, according to his father, Paul Scarlett.

“With the plate being bent, it's not normal,” Paul Scarlett said. “Right now we're having to contemplate what to do. We could easily leave it and let it heal up. We just talked to a doctor on Monday, so we have a couple of days to decide what to do.”

The 6-foot-5, 255-pound Scarlett, rated as a four-star recruit by Rivals.com and Scout.com, continues to evaluate his college options.

He has visited USC and Notre Dame and plans to visit California this weekend and either Nebraska or Stanford the following weekend, Paul Scarlett said. He also is scheduled to visit UCLA during the first weekend of December.

He also is considering Oregon, Washington and LSU, his father said.

“He's just trying to decide through the visits,” Paul Scarlett said. “The visits are helping. He's not in a rush to decide. I think we'll have a better idea in December after he's completed his visits.”

Scarlett has been selected for the U.S. Army All-American Bowl on Jan. 8 in San Antonio, but it is uncertain if he will play. The all-star game has become a stage for players to announce their college choices, but Scarlett may need more time to decide, his father said.

Scarlett, who missed his sophomore and junior basketball seasons because of season-ending football injuries, is hopeful of playing basketball this season. If he does, it probably wouldn't be until late December at the earliest, according to Paul Scarlett.

For now, Brennan Scarlett will root for the Rams from the sidelines.

“This last incident is certainly a big blow,” Paul Scarlett said. “He's a strong kid, he's got strong resolves, so he'll make it through. He worked hard and he was patient. He looked impressive in the two series he was out there.”

I'm sorry, but collar bone and hand breaks are freak injuries and are no indication of one's susceptibility to injury. As for the ACL, does anyone know how that went down?

Maybe he just didn't drink enough milk as a kid...
Tough to lose a whole season to a broken hand. But one partial ACL tear doesn't seem career-ending.

Truth. Also, does anyone know if he red-shirted? If so, could he be eligible for a medical and possibly have TWO years of eligibility left?

I don't know about Brennan Scarlett guys:

Missed sophomore bball season due to football injury
Missed junior bball season due to football injury
Missed playoffs senior football season due to aggravated previous injury
Missed junior year in college due to broken hand
Missed most of senior year in college due to ACL tear

That's injuries sidelining him 5 of the last 7 years. I'm all for adding depth and experience but I sure don't see this turning out as good as the Riggs transfer.

He plays in the FBS, still. With UTSA, a recent addition to the C-USA, only becoming a bowl eligible full member this past season.
