I don't mind holding parents accountable for their shithead children. Some kids are true shitheads that need to be addressed at the root of their problems, which means addressing their parents. This might even stir up a bigger pot, calling parents to attention on their own absentee-parenting issues.

The problem is that ALL children have the potential to be shitheads at some level (even the best and the brightest), and that there is no concrete way to define "bullying" as it pertains to the law.

The most well-behaved, well-raised kids in the world are going to do something dumb at some point simply based on immaturity and psychological/social development... are you going to penalize parents because their children are normal children who f*ck up on occasion? How do you separate those parents from the ones that have kids that are actual shitheads? Or is there going to be a "first-time offender" rule? Seems like a slippery slope in terms of wasting the time of the justice system.

As for bullying itself: are there legal/official guidelines that define bullying these days? I used to get picked on during my daily bus ride because of my last name. I laughed along with the other kids, gave them sh*t for their issues, and we all grew thicker skin and became friends. Today, a kid getting picked on for his last name could probably get the other kids suspended, and would then be referred to counseling services.

I'm thinking the judge will know real fast what type of parents a kid has when they appear before the judge.

A judge once said that he couldn't define what was pornographic, but he knew it when he saw it. I think that applies here. Hard to define bad parenting, bullying, a kid whose parents have let him become a real little shithead, or when it's just kids being kids, but most of us (and hopefully the schools, courts, and law enforcement) will know the difference when they see it.

I think, like Lion said, it's a slippery slope. Plus, you want to worsen the family dynamic? Throw a working class parent into prison for 15 days and tell me things aren't going to be worse for the alleged bully. Now s/he is even more likely to act out as their household falls apart (as it may have already been doing anyway).

While it is on the parents to raise their children to not be assholes, you cannot control your child, especially an older teenager, at all times. That is one thing about this crackdown on bullying that people fail to realize. We want to eliminate bullying, yet that just can't happen. Kids act out. Kids fight and argue. It's going to happen. Should we raise awareness and try to limit it? Absolutely, but we can't expect parents to totally eliminate it, and to punish them with jail time is absurd.

Though I do think what the one juvenile did in the story is horrible and he deserved to get rocked by another kid.

Part of a message sent to my institution after a pro-life display was vandalized:

If you encounter a speaker whose message offends you, there are acceptable actions you can take. You can ignore them and move on, or you can espouse a contrary viewpoint. You cannot, however, act in a manner that prevents others from speaking and being heard, including through authorized displays.

As individuals on a public campus, we have no legally protected right to be shielded from views we find offensive. Our own views on any given topic do not limit other people’s rights to share opposing views, either verbally or visually, however disagreeable they might be to us. Indeed, the very intent of the First Amendment is to protect views that might represent minority or unpopular positions from the power of the majority and the state to suppress. Our founding fathers stood resolute in the defense of free speech rights, just as we do today.

I hope that this reminder will help all of us respond more thoughtfully and effectively to the normal clash of ideas and perspectives that are naturally present in society and on our campus.

Feels good to know that those in charge where I work are on top of their game at the moment.

Some pastors stand behind Roy Moore, cite "war on men" (Al.com)

Pastor Franklin Raddish of the Capitol Hill Independent Baptist Ministries, a nationwide church, told AL.com from his South Carolina home that the spate of accusations against men in politics, Hollywood and elsewhere was a "war on men."

"More women are sexual predators than men," said Raddish. "Women are chasing young boys up and down the road, but we don't hear about that because it's not PC."

Shouldn't ND be forced to remove Touchdown Jesus and all references to Christ? He NEVER spoke out in support of homosexuality and is thus clearly a homophobic bigot. The whole robe & beard thing was cultural appropriation from the Babylonians. Don't even get me started on the 12 Apostles - all men and not a black guy in the group. Let's talk racist AND misogynistic!

I keep getting fed ads on Twitter about the wedding cake case that's about to hit the Supreme Court. In every single scare scenario the "bigot" is a white male. Nevermind that Muslims, etc. are even more likely to not want to bake a hypothetical wedding cake for a gay wedding or that there are many black/brown Christians... every single villain is a white dude.

If true, then I'm guessing none of these white dudes have (proudly) ever seen that movie.

You think so? Objectively, I think he should. But I don't think any of the justices are going to try to be objective in their ruling. Can't see Kennedy or any of the liberals wanting to get smeared on Twitter.

The one saving grace is that the administration doesn't seem to be backing down. Where does the line end though? Do we erase our entire history because every damn person or folk hero this country produced up until the signing of the Declaration of Independence is pretty much affiliated with either slavery or actions that are considered inappropriate in the 21st century? When and where does the madness end? This is history, not current news.
