With that being said, I've always been baffled as to why Oriental is so offensive to some. It has no negative connotation. Orient just means east and Oriental means someone from the east. The current term Asian seems rather inaccurate, as it essentially leaves out those from other parts of Asia, such as Indians, Iranians, many Russians, etc.

Oriental is meant for objects, Asian is meant for people. I don't know why/when that changed, but "Oriental" doesn't really seem to get a rise out of many people.

That article reeked of virtue signaling, but I'd be super on board with Idris being Bond. He's a great actor, plays a badass extremely well, and is British AF.

Besides the 007 continuity has always worked best if you act like "007/James Bond" is a title instead of a real name. (I know Skyfall fucked that up, but let's be honest, if it's true that this is all supposed to be one man, the whole timeline is already so far up its own ass that continuity doesn't matter anyway.)

EDIT: I'd certainly prefer Elba to Henry Cavill. Saw him in MI:6 last weekend and decided I'd give him one more chance. He looks the part but is as emotive as a block of wood.

Not sure any of today's population under 30 understand the history of 007. Not really sure it matters at this point. I loved Craig, and thought he was the best since Connery, so sad to see him go. I'm a big fan of Idris, and think he might make a good one. Loved Luther, and I think he can pull off the personality.

But I agree with you about all the nonsense. Wanting XX or XX to play it just because, is crap. I'm sure we'll have a female 007 in the next 20-30 years.

I love Alba, she's hot as fuck. Oh, wait, Elba... yeah he's good, too.

For real, though, hasn't "Kingsman" out-Bonded Bond?

So Acamp, who would you pick?

Anyway, for me,... Staying with Craig for as long as possible would be the best deal... he's the closest to the real Bond we've seen on film.

Stahp! Go home, PETA, you're drunk.

I'm surprised they didn't advocate to change the shape/image of the animal crackers so they're no longer animals. That's totally a PETA move.

It's been about 15 or more years ago, but I got into a debate with someone from PETA discussing racoons destroying farmers corn crops. Obviously she was against hunting them. She tells me a farmer should put a fence around their fields to keep the racoons out. I explain that farmers can't afford to fence thousands of acres, but even if they could, it won't keep racoons out as they will climb the fence or dig under it. Her reply was "they should find some other way to keep them out". I then say, "So you're against killing racoons, correct?" Her reply was "Yes, they are Gods creatures". I then asked her if she kills flies or ants when they get in her house? When she said yes, I asked, "Aren't those God's creatures?" Her reply, "That's different".

There is no reasoning with PETA.

Mind-Blow-2.gif

Everybody read this, for real.

The most pernicious aspect of the orientation-identity system is that it tends to exempt heterosexuals from moral evaluation. If homosexuality binds us to sin, heterosexuality blinds us to sin.

There is no question that some morally self-aware “heterosexuals” exist. Nevertheless, as a general rule, identifying as a heterosexual person today amounts to declaring oneself a member of the “normal group,” against which all deviant sexual desires and attractions and temptations are to be measured. Such hetero-identification thus ushers in a pathetically uncritical and—hopefully it goes without saying—unmerited self-assurance, not to mention an inaccurate measure for evaluating temptation.

The Vatican’s Secret Life

One can Google "list of sexually active Popes" for historical info.

Though the number of gay priests in general, and specifically among the Curia in Rome, is unknown, the proportion is much higher than in the general population. Between 20 and 60 percent of all Catholic priests are gay, according to one estimate cited by Donald B. Cozzens in his well-regarded The Changing Face of the Priesthood.

20-60%?! That's a pretty wide swath there. Why would they even mention such a statistic if they couldn't narrow it down to a reasonable number? 60% seems like a ridiculous number honestly. I get that there are members of the priesthood that are gay and they aren't going to be forthcoming with the statistics, but that's all the more reason not to jump to conclusions with guesstimates. 1/5 is a whole lot different than 3/5.

Dude, 20% is a laughably high number imo....

I mean, I was thinking it too, but who knows...the whole issue of homosexuality in the priesthood is so taboo and they couldn't come out even if they wanted to, who knows what the actual numbers are. Roughly 3.5-4% of the population identifies as LGBT, with the number of gay people being obviously less. So yeah, even if we conservatively use that number, by that guesstimate 20% is still an incredibly high percentage.

Maybe there's an argument that the priesthood attracts individuals of a certain sexuality and that can result in a greater percentage...but 60%? That would mean priests are more than 17 times likely to be homosexual than the average man on the street, and that's using the conservative numbers mentioned above. In any case, throwing out such a wild estimate really made me question the article and the author.

20-60% overall strikes me as extremely unlikely. But this 2002 article by Fr. Paul Shaughnessy, SJ indicates that such estimates are possible for certain orders (like the American Jesuits), and this 2003 article by Fr. Paul Mankowski, SJ gives a plausible explanation for how so many of them ended up in positions of authority.

Can we just excommunicate the Jesuits and be done with it?

It's weird. The young priests I admire most are all highly formed by Jesuit spirituality or by a Jesuit mentor, and are very orthodox.

Not even sure what thread this fits best in but yeah, here you go:

https://www.wsj.com/articles/fake-news-comes-to-academia-1538520950

Academia in America is a mess for many reasons. The point they are trying to make in this article is that identity politics, and grievance focused research, are taking over. Criticize it, and your a "fill in the blank". Universities churning out more and more sheeples. Tell me again why my federal and state taxes go to places who prioritize being a political breeding ground, than prepping kids for the job market?

Side note. My cousin's husband is a 20+ year prof at Purdue. He's a heads down nerd, who is church going family man. He has political views (left on social, mod on economy from what I can guess), but rarely willing to chat politics even with family. One thing he does occasionally comment on, is the full tilt silliness from his peers. And I'd assume Purdue to be more moderate than most.
