But the cop walking to the car with his gun drawn for a turn signal violation is alarming. Wish it were on camera, that way the story could be about that and not the guy's reaction video.

This is true... I've been with others for a while that a priority needs to be standardized body cams. I understand the logistics and cost but yeah...

probably cos the cop walked up to him with his gun drawn?

Is there an extended version of the video that shows his gun unholstered?

I don't understand the premise of the video given what I just watched.

Allegedly.

There is a longer video (3 minutes) out there but you still dont see that. Any way the guy says this to the cop and the cop never denies drawing his gun.

The man levels with the cop and tells him that if he had just come to the car sans weapon and done his normal routine, there would have been no problems. But instead: "I turn around to a fucking gun pointed in my face!"

"Good cops get fucked-up raps because of people like you," the driver says. "You picked a dangerous fucking job and I respect that. But my G—drawing a fucking gun? That's where I lose the respect. The respect is out of the fucking window. You drew a fucking gun on me for a fucking turn signal...I'm quite sure there's proper training to where you don't have to draw your gun and you can still be safe."

It was a viral video and no version have I found that showed the drawing of the gun. They all start with the cop standing there.

The premise is fairly straightforward. An AA failing to use a turn signal is grounds for the drawing of a gun, hence the black man telling the cop off at great personal risk (considering other black men being shot in their cars by cops).

Anyway, the guy didnt get shot and the cop stood there and took it like "....yeah I got nuthing. Sorry Dawg"

Hmm. It seems plausible to me that the cop is simply deescalating the situation by not responding... I started this thread because there are obviously a lot of issues with policing in this country. But I'm not gonna weigh in one way or another without something that shows him "pointing a gun in his face." It's the Schrodinger's cat of videos for me:
1. If he came up to this car with his gun drawn, then I think the video is great and fuck that cop.
2. If he didn't, then this a bullshit stunt for internet fame and fuck that guy.

Certainly. It is weird. Agree with 1 and 2.

Did he draw a gun? I missed that on the video.

Let me guess there's nothing in the video but the driver's rant. What was the resolution of the stop? Warning? Ticket? Taken out in handcuffs? Have a nice day?

Incident report/charges filed against the cop?

I've had two cops pull guns on me. Both had justification.

Although the first one cocked his weapon after telling me to reach into the glove box to get my registration. I didn't rant. I had gotten that talk from my father as did my sibling when we each learned to drive. I slowly put my hands on the car and turned to see the largest barrel gun in my life. The barrel looked about 3 inches in diameter, I could see the bullets in his revolver. it was terrifying. I calmly told him he was free to cuff me while he called for backup. I told him I would not move until backup arrived. He uncocked the gun, reholstered his weapon, checked by registration and sent me on the way. The reason for the stop? No traffic violation, not even a turn signal. He thought I looked to young (17) to be driving a sports car, TR-4 which my brother-in-law gave me to take over the payments after he lost his license. The cop apologized. It wasn't on video.

The second time was 30 years later. I was in my basement garage and saw a cop car in my driveway but no cop. I walked around front and saw him on my front porch. He asked who I was. I said the owner and reached for my wallet in my right rear pocket. He whipped out his gun and assumed a firing position. I froze. I apologized for taking my hand out of his line of vision. Said I was not armed and that with his permission I would slowly turn around so he could see my hand was on my wallet. He told me which way to turn and I complied. He came to me and check my photo I.D. He had a valid reason to be at my house. My alarm company had reported an intrusion. My alarm made no noise in the house (I have a panel in the basement) nor did the siren activate.
We apologized to each other for the mutual discomfort. I realized he was doing his job. I didn't know he was responding to possible break in when I walked up to him and casually reached for my wallet taking a a hand out his sight line. There was NO headline that day that said, "Black cop shoots (stupid) unarmed white home owner."

As dad4aa noted, what were the circumstances? We don't know from the clip.

Cop should have just went on doing his job and asked for his license and registration instead of just sitting there like a bozo.

I guess this is true in the literal sense but you really don't see the enormous flaw in this line of reasoning? Bad plumbers result in flooded toilets, bad priests result in boring homilies, bad football players result in more losses than wins, but bad cops result in dead bodies. Just not even close to a reasonable comparison.

Been off the planet for the past 40 years, have you?

Jesus, I'm perfectly aware of the sexual abuse scandals. I didn't bring those up because they don't change the point of the argument at all.

You're perfectly aware of the sexual abuse scandals yet chose to substitute boring homilies underscores your bias.

Countless ruined lives, broken marriages, and suicides caused by those with an even higher level of trust, a scared trust, compounded by not only a lack of institutional control but institutional complicity. Those priests undertook years of education, study, and training not just a couple of months. They preyed on defenseless children and when identified were relocated to another parish so they could continue their depravity with a new supply of victims. They didn't take an oath; they took vows.

They weren't faced with battered spouses who called for aid and then stab the cop that came to help for arresting their abuser. They didn't have to make a split second decision when facing life and death situations. They don't have to deal with drunks on a tear, high speed chases, getting shot in the face at a traffic stop or while parked at the curb on a city street, or the errant driver that didn't see the cop on the side of the road before he ran her over.

...or the errant driver that didn't see the cop on the side of the road before he ran her over.

A bit of comic relief in an otherwise unfunny conversation:

About 12 years ago I was on my way back home from Nashville to N. AL very late one night as I was going home for my birthday. I was tired and sort of zoned out. A couple of TN Highway Patrol officers had a car pulled over on the shoulder of I-65 and I clearly saw them, but I was so tired that it didn't occur to me that I should move to the left lane. I went zipping by them and one of them quickly came after me and pulled me over. As the officer walked up to the passenger side of my car, I rolled the window down and then my eyes about popped out of my head. The officer was an extraordinarily beautiful woman - creamy olive complexion, fat lips, blue eyes - one of the 10 most beautiful women I've ever met face-to-face. She actually looked a lot like Adriana Lima. This is pretty much what was asking me for my license:

My first thought was, "Is this a joke? Where are the hidden cameras? Is she about to strip and then my brother and a couple of my friends will show up and yell 'Happy Birthday!'" I'm not kidding, I actually had that thought for about 1 second. I started to ask her if there was any way to avoid a ticket, but she cut me off immediately with a sharp "NO!" and then chewed me out for a couple of minutes before writing me a ticket.

Hahahahaha... re-read your post. And I'm the biased one? Regardless, I did not ignore the sex abuse scandals because of whatever bias you perceive me to hold, I ignored them because, again, they do not change the argument. The point of my argument was that, again, the consequences of having bad cops are much more severe than those of almost any other profession. In the case of sexually abusive priests (which is about as bad as it gets among "other" professions), those kids and their families were torn apart, what the priests did is absolutely atrocious and I'm not trying to minimize their suffering at all. Even so, I'm going to make an apparently-controversial point among the readers here: being alive > not being alive. Very, very few other professions at their most extreme negative ends result in dead people - cops do.

This is the best story that I've seen all week.

I watched in on my own right before you posted. Terrible.

He did disobey orders, but man... He was scared to death. To my eye, he is trying to pull his pants up. He did disobey the order to not reach there, but damn...

I know it's a high pressure situation, I have never been in law enforcement or the military. But clearly this dude was a wreck and had a hard time with the orders because he was so nervous... Why not just keep him face down and search him that way?

How many orders can a person be reasonably expected to obey before they make a slight mistake? I am not an anti-police person and have generally sided with law enforcement on most of these national stories with two exceptions - the man who was shot in the back in South Carolina (I believe) and Eric Garner. I can understand how reasonable minds could disagree on Garner. To me, it was excessive and there was a complete lack of humanity shown by police officers. It struck me as sadistic. That's just me, though. I don't know the whole story so it's nothing more than one idiot's opinion. This strikes me as the same. It was difficult to watch.

Yeah that's some insane shit. If police order you to do the hokey pokey and you put in the wrong foot in do they have license to kill?

Bad policing is a problem and it's not just a white-vs-black thing. The biggest issue is the injustice and lack of accountability when someone DOES fuck up.

The officer was over the line, but at the same time with the way the world is today (Especially after the shooting in Nevada earlier this year) you can't be stupid about gun safety. The deceased was pointing a gun (Airsoft or not) out of a hotel window toward a pool area. The officer was over the line, given that no shots were fired prior to the encounter, but if Shaver was smart the entire encounter never happens.

Believe it was a gun run for someone showing a gun out the window. Real tough video to watch, but it makes a bit of sense why the officer was hopped up when the kid reached for his waist band.

The guy who got shot & killed worked for an exterminator. He had a couple of people in his hotel room and was showing them an air rifle he used to kill birds as part of his job. Unfortunately, he pointed the air rifle out the window of his hotel room and that resulted in the police being called.

I agree. I think bad policing can look racist but ultimately its just flat bad policing. I am confused why the officer had him crawl that far in the first place. Was it to get him away from his room?

I was chased when I was out jogging once and then had to comply with officer demands. It was around 8pm and I was in a panic and could not comply honestly. Maybe I am lucky to be alive, officer eventually power bombed me and had his knee in my back for about 10 minutes until they realized I was about 1ft shorter and too light complected to be the guy they were looking for.
