As an ND Football fan, I like to live in a space where I know that Urban Meyer isn't really plausible while at the same time the program as it is today isn't too good for PJ Fleck.
It would seem on paper like he's a viable guy for ND should the job open up again one day down the road, as we know it eventually will. Timing is everything.
Fleck seems to possess an energy to run a program and recruiting acumen that would translate well with more resources and the horsepower of a bigger more traditional football brand. For me, he's an intriguing guy to track as an ND fan.
At which point I will be excited about him potentially coaching at ND. But not before then.
Guys like Fleck fail at the highest level far more often than they succeed. Nothing I've seen from him thus far would justify jumping the gun to get him.
You remember when BK was struggling in 2016 and Tom Herman was the new hotness? Texas hired him and there was plenty of bellyaching here that we'd continue to languish without that sort of decisiveness in hiring and firing from our admin. He just picked up his 3rd conference loss against Iowa State, has no hope of winning the Big-12, and won't be headed to a prestige bowl either. Longhorn fans are already losing patience with him.
And Herman's record at Houston was a helluva lot more impressive than anything Fleck has done to date! So let's temper the excitement for unproven coaches.
You take all the fun out of this.
Well anti-Fleck/BK apologists on here had their feelings hurt when the Gophers won last week so they were holding their breath waiting for him to trip up. Apparently losing on the road to a ranked team by one score is the vindication they were waiting for.Wait, so a loss to a decent Iowa team and suddenly PJ Fleck is trash??? Man, life comes at you fast huh???
I've been mostly off the BK wagon and every time I start in inch back on (first 9 games of 2017 and first 12 games of 2018) he causes me to abandon ship once again (Miami and Stanford 2017, Clemson 2018) by proving that his ceiling here is the second tier of CFB. I wanted Fleck in 2016 and nothing has changed my opinion on him in the last few seasons. There were definitely a few people that jumped off the BK wagon after Michigan and grabbed an oar to start rowing. Some of those people are still in the boat ready to go. The BK thread had a lot of it.
They are more than capable of beating all three. Why you would pick three rather middle of the road teams as your example is baffling to me. You want to rag on Minnesota's easy schedule go peep Baylor's.Imagine them lining up against a Texas or an Auburn or Baylor? Not a pretty day for MN.

But that wasn't the point of my post. My point was that Baylor is not so good that Minnesota would have zero shot against them. I actually think that Minnesota would be (rightfully) favored in that match up. Texas is garbage. Auburn would be the toughest match up.But no one's annointing Rhule as the reason BK should get fired/quit
Fleck lost a game? Definitely not the guy for the job. Any other undefeated D1 guys we might-could poach?
There is always Ryan Day.

For the record I don't want BK fired necessarily, I just wouldn't lose much sleep if he moved on.

I wasn't addressing you in my post and was addressing Wingman Ray in a conversation that was really unrelated to who will be ND's next coach. Baylor's schedule was relevant to my conversation with him, you interjected commentary that was irrelevant to the conversation I was having with him. My point was Minnesota could beat Baylor and I only threw out the comment about the schedule to point out that a common criticism of the Gophers, they have played a weak schedule and are thus overrated, could be applied equally if not moreso to Baylor who Wingman Ray thought would roll the U of M.The point of my post is that we are only discussing Minnesota schedule because of the number of those that want fleck to be ND next coach. Not Rhule, therefore Baylor schedule is irrelevant.
.The problem isn't the program being too good for Fleck but Fleck not being a good enough candidate on and off the field for the admin/board/search committee.
That's exactly what I'm getting at. PJ Fleck at Notre Dame for my money would be a force provided each entity plays ball with the other a bit. Problem is I doubt ND is willing to give him any rope and Fleck knows life would be easier just about everywhere else for him.
I'm with you, I think he'd do an excellent job at ND but I watch games with some connected 60's alums and Fleck sounds like a non-starter because of baggage. John Harbaugh is the guy that lights up their eyes. Jeff Brohm will be as long as his Freshmen, Sophmore and incoming 2020 classes move him to the top of the B1G-W.
I assume they know how much John Harbaugh currently makes? Hell, Brohm might even be making more than Kelly is now. I suppose we could say the same for Fleck.
I've learned to listen closely to both Whiskey's Catholic moral compass and Lax's bread crumb divulgements. The University and her soldiers have a predictable methodology if you keep your eyes and ears open.
I don't have any doubt that they won't go near a guy like PJ Fleck. The pool is small and shallow. Just like recruiting. They will take themselves out of the running for a vast majority of viable candidates before a search even starts just by being who they are.
Predictable until the money starts to dry up a little. I think that's the only way that methodology changes. The next conference realignment shift is going to tell us a lot, and there is another one coming.

Brohm is making a little over $5M.
I hope Minnesota gets hammered today. Sick of hearing about this guy.

Good piece on Fleck and Minnesota. Dude has serious passion. While I doubt ND and Fleck would ever happen, I would grab an oar and row if it did. We'd have to build new boats first, though. All of the ashes are in Clemson, SC.

Does this game have any impact on our bowl scenarios? Or am I free to root for whoever in this one.
