so why do people care about it so much?

B/c he is in your face about it. It's like the old Miami teams in the 80's and early 90's. They were fantastic but wanted to make sure everyone knew just how fantastic they were. It was obnoxious and made it that much better when teams like ND were able to beat them. Now, compare them to the Bama teams today. Sure, I don't care for either team, but the way the Bama team conducts themselves is night and day different.

just seems laughly to acknowledge its who he is and not gonna change then be pissed about it.

not everyone is going to be the model of success they wish to see.

I mean the sherrif himself has his transgressions. cheated on his wife, most def. took HGH.

I guess Cam should just go up there and be fake so everyone gets off his back right?

like i said above, i dont care for the guy myself. but he is who he is. and imo he has gotten more mature about it and will continue to, but he wont ever be what people want.

Some of that is carry over from college, some of that is his attitude. but again. all things that arent going to change drastically or at all.

I don't think "pissed" is the right word. More like "don't like the guy and love to watch him lose." I'm not angry that he is who he is, but that doesn't mean I have to like who he is.

It happens everywhere, not just sports. Pop over to the Election thread and count how many times someone has said something like "Ted Cruz has the most punch-able face I've ever seen."

Backing away from that loose ball at the end might haunt him for the rest of his career. Just reminded me of the kid who takes his ball and goes home when things don't go his way.

If footballs were laptops Cam would have been all over it.

Can understand Cam's disappointment in not winning the game, but he needs to learn to be gracious in defeat. As the league MVP, he had the opportunity to show his maturity in defeat. Instead he reverts back to the pouting two year old we saw last season.

Congrats to P. Manning and the Denver Broncos. That defense was incredible and was cheering for Manning to get another SB before he rides off in the sunset.

And the Pat fans trying to steal the moment... grow up. You have a great organization and a great team. But last night wasn't about you... it was about Denver.

But he was the one touting how he has changed.....and that narrative has been coming from him since 2013 (see linked story). He also was the one claiming people were uncomfortable with him b/c of his race. While I am sure some may feel that way, his behavior last night just proved why people don't care for him.

Did I miss something? What did Pats fans try to do?

I was rooting hard for Peyton. He's on my Mt. Rushmore of rivals-you-hate-but-can't-help-liking along with Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera, and Jorge Posada.

you dont think his attitude has improved? and i think it has every year since 2013.

I think race plays a part in it, small, imo, but maybe not to others.

And yes, I am not trying to say he handled last night perfect. But I think previous years Cam handles it WWWWWAAAAAYYYYYY worse, too.

But when I read things like "Compare Blair Walsh and how he handled the post game interviews to Cam's. It's a joke."

I mean why are we comparing a kicker to a quarterback. That doesn't even dive into their social/economic backgrounds.

they handled something differently, well no fucking shit.

I agree with your list, but would put Kobe on and take no-chin Posada off. I also like Peyton (as my new user name subtitle indicates).

.

Why......because one guy completely botched it for his team, was clearly the focal point after the game, at took it like man. Cam was not the sole reason why the team lost yesterday. But instead of acting like a leader and professional, he pouted.

Sure, Walsh and Newton are two completely different people. But the differences in how the conducted themselves are stark. Newton continues to come across as a selfish player. Last night didn't change that.

That was one of the oddest things I have ever seen in any sport. People will never let him forget that.

I really think he was trying to pick it up and continue the play, and that's why he didn't dive.

That could be it too. It is easy to criticize, but we don't know what he was thinking there. In that situation though, you gotta pounce on the football and live to play another down. Again, in real time, that is easier said than done.

Absolutely you have to know to pounce on it rather than risking the sure recovery (which is what happened).

It looked pretty clear on replay that he was coming in to pick it up. But I also believe that because I got yelled at for this my freshman year of high school. Our QB fumbled the ball on a run, and I was trailing him, looking to get a block. Instead of diving on the ball when it came out, I was going to try and get over the ball, pin it into the ground, and scoop and run (just like Jappy Oliver taught me at ND overnight camp in 2004 lol). But, by the time I was almost over top of the ball, another player was on the ground scrambling for it, and I was too close to try and dive for it with my hands.

My coaches ripped into me during film sessions, asking me if I was scared of the ball. I told them I was trying to scoop it and get some yards. I never made that mistake again on a fumble lol.

To me, Cam can tone it down a bit but it's not a big deal... the after game stuff? That's just the media looking for anything to keep the story that they basically constructed going for as long as possible imo... he's emotional, as many athletes are in that spot. He def could have handled it better but so can most athletes in that spot. Didn't Manning walk off the field without congratulating the Saints when they lost? It happens. Long to short, if I'm going to hold something over Cam, it's not going to be something as small as, 'he got really depressed after losing the Super Bowl."

I don't think he is wrong, and I can certainly understand Cam being upset after a tough loss on the biggest stage, but he needs to do better as a leader. How I feel about this versus how you do is subjective anyway. I know many people on here hate Brady for one reason or another, while others dislike Cam, Peyton, Rogers etc. for their own reasons as well. It is just personal preference I guess, but for me, as a leader of a team, I expect a different level of grace in the face of defeat. I don't expect him to be happy about losing at all, but with his history, and his in your face mantra of celebrating it works both ways. Gotta have a little more class and composure when you are in the spotlight.

— Cam Newton’s Authenticity Is Highly Questionable

Have to disagree. I don't think he got depressed, he acted out what was inside of him, strong immaturity, bitterness and arrogance. Sadly, the guy is a poor leader at this point in his career because of his character flaws. I actually hope he is able to overcome the inner flaws that are holding him back. It was weird watching that post-game interview, I found myself having compassion for the guy even though he was being completely immature and bitter. I think that is because I could see some of my own flaws that I've fought with being displayed in him. I would really enjoy seeing his story end with a significant change in character, a guy people look up to and want to emulate. But, at this point that is not who he is and we need to able to say that without it coming down to race hate or whatever other excuses are being put out there.

Absolutely.

From the attached
But Cam needs to grow up. And the people using race to excuse every misstep made by Newton need to go away or be ignored. They’re not helping Newton. They’re crippling him. They’re part of the reason Newton acted like a spoiled 3-year-old in the aftermath of the Broncos putting a stop to the first-down celebrations and dancing. The Broncos humbled Newton and instead of standing before the cameras like a grown-ass man, Newton sulked and then abruptly walked away.

He punked out. He displayed zero leadership during the game or after it.

...

The clickbait whores defined “blackness” as a willingness to dance and celebrate after touchdowns and routine first downs. I’m not anti-emotion or celebrations. It takes a great deal of emotion to play football at its highest level. But I also think it’s fair for Newton’s critics to define some of his behavior as unsportsmanlike, as over the top.
Hey-look-at-me celebrations aren’t black. They’re hey look at me.

...

I like Cam Newton. But he reminds me of other spoiled, entitled athletes with chips on their shoulder. Christian Laettner comes to mind. When a good segment of the sports world embraced disliking Laettner, no one cried that Laettner’s critics were racist. Hell, ESPN made a “30 for 30” documentary about people hating Laettner.
People do not like arrogance. People do not like front-runners. The color doesn’t matter.
It feels like Cam Newton chose a lane Sunday night. He wants to be polarizing. He doesn’t want to be the face of the NFL. The burden is too great. That’s fine.
But let’s stop all the whining about letters to the editor. I’m really not all that interested in discussing Bill Romanowski’s stupid tweet that called Cam a “boy.” I don’t care about Romanowski’s ignorance and bigotry.
I care(d) about Cam. I love watching him play football. I’d like for him to reach his full potential. I’d like for him to understand the consequences of the decisions he made Sunday night. Brooding babies get criticized. And now his peers in the NFL know Superman is just a bully wearing a cape that can be easily pulled.
Word is out on the football yard that Von Miller made Cam Newton grab a belt loop. It’s not a good look. It damn sure ain’t “authentically and unapologetically black.”

It's not the reaction per se. It's the fact that he said all of his "haters" were race haters that were afraid of him because of the color of his skin. While that may be true for some, the real reason was how he conducts himself, the me first approach that has followed him throughout his career.

Last night was a chance for him prove to everyone that he had matured and he no longer was the person who celebrates a TD while getting pantsed by the Giants (which led to Steve Smith, of all people, to tell him to tone it down). He could prove that he was a true leader and conduct himself accordingly. Instead of acting like Johnathon Stewart, Thomas Davis and Luke Kuechly, he took his ball and went home.

So for me, what he did last night was fine in of itself. It's just the combination of what he said before the game and his actions after that bother me.

I have been playing a lot of devil's advocate on this just because the feelings (hate) for Cam are very one-sided. I absolutely believe he could have done better. But it wasn't awful either. It was a learning experience and I expect him to handle himself better if the same situation ever presents itself. (we may never know and he could prove me very very wrong)

I know if I had the best team in the league and lost i would be bitter as hell. They played like dog shit and had the ball with 4 minutes left and a chance to win. If that doesnt make you bitter I dont know what does!!

His post game interview def. didnt look like the best leader in the world. But by most accounts this guy is a fantastic leader. I am witholding judgement on that because I have never seen his leadership in action other than what espn wants me to see.

However, if he really is that great of a leader, Cam and the Panthers organization just need to keep culitivating it.
