so EddytoNow proposes a straight up lottery for immigration? Put all the names in a hat and pull out a winner! Or is it a pure and open border with citizenship to anyone that can stumble into our country?
Not at all. I'm just stating that any immigration reform that is adopted should be non-discriminatory. If it is determined we can accept only a specific number of immigrants per year, then religion, ethnicity, economic status, and education level, etc. should not be used as "the" criteria for favoring one group over another.
For example: A poor, brown-skinned, Spanish-speaking, uneducated immigrant should not go to the back of the line because they are not wealthy, white-skinned, English speaking, and college educated. If such a policy had existed in the 1800's, the poor, white-skinned, Gaelic-speaking, uneducated, Catholic Irish immigrant would have been excluded. The sentiment certainly existed among many earlier immigrants to discriminate against Irish Catholics in the same manner many want to discriminate against non-Western European, non-Protestant immigrants today.
The parallels are there.
