Maybe #OhioState president Gordon Gee can trade a bow tie for a tattoo that constantly reminds him to keep his mouth closed #footinmouth

This is completely unacceptable. Can you imagine if he said "jews can't be trusted" or "the muslims that run that school are..."... the media would've already lynched him. It is outrageous that someone like Gee in his position can make comments like that.

Too bad Christianity is the only unprotected religion.

Not a good year for the Big Ten. I don't think this is offensive though.

You serious, Clark?

Explain how that isn't offensive?!?!? Lax stated it perfectly. If you sub out "Catholic" and insert another religion, the media would have hung Gee by his underpants on a flag pole!

I can't be trusted because of my religion???? That's f-ing ridiculous!!! Gee should have been fired and Jenkins shouldn't have taken his phone call. Period.

As a leader in the Faith, Father Jenkins absolutely should take the phone call and respond with Grace - exactly as he did.

I've stated it before, and I'll repeat:

Gordon Gee is Ohio State's elderly pseudo-Playboy who has done a remarkable job transforming Ohio State from an above average institution to a very good one. Left and right the guy is smashing fundraising records and launching multi-billion dollar construction/expansion plans. He has been fantastic for Ohio State and disagree with the "overpaid beaureucrat" comments. You'd have to ignore the skyrocketing admission standards, quality of students/programs, and overall academic reputation to come to that conclusion unbiasedly.

I don't at all get bent out of shape for comments administrators or coaches say at pep banquets or whatnot. So Hoke's "chickening out" comment...mehh. Gee's "Little Sisters of The Poor" comment....mehh. But this is the first one that has crossed the line, regardless of me being a Notre Dame fan or also being a guy who makes edgy jokes in public. So this is a definite -1 for Gee from me.

No, father Jenkins did exactly what he is supposed to do. That's what good catholics do, they forgive.

See, I'm not inclined to give Gee a lot of credit for these trends. OSU has one of the largest and most insanely loyal alumni bases in the country. Praising Gee for getting lots of money from these people is akin to praising an SEC coach for recruiting well. It'd be hard not to succeed.

And most schools are becoming more selec7ive* simply because demand still far outstrips supply for higher education. I've seen no evidence that Gee deserves credit for any positive developments at OSU, aside from hiring Urban Meyer. By all accounts, he's an arrogant, big-spending, loud-mouthed aristocrat who excels at glad-handing with similarly situated leeches.

*I couldn't post this due to the dreaded internal server error until I tweaked the spelling of "selective".

By all accounts? ...from Arizona?

When Gee arrived anyone who graduated from high school in Ohio got accepted. Now the average ACT of the incoming class--the largest in school history--is a 29. It's pretty tough to get in to the school now, it had never been like that before.

I don't agree with the fundraising comment because if it were so easy 1) it would have already been done, 2) all of the B1G schools would be thriving too with their massive alumni bases. The improvements and advances at OSU have far outpaced the average. He is a leader, and came in with the attitude of running a corporation and targeted X, Y, Z objectives and hit them out of the park.

I do agree, slightly, that OSU was a sleeping giant. But I think its a copout to dismiss the successes in my opinion. Gee works for OSU as well as he could. His style would fail miserably at other places (he was basically fired from Brown), but has does wonders in Columbus.

Can anyone imagine if Jenkins had something as offensive as Gee? Just picture for a second Jenkins saying "we don't want BYU because you can't trust those damn Mormons."

It would be front page news everywhere with people calling for his resignation.

To me the funniest part is Gee saying that ND wants to have their cake and eat it too. Notre Dame holds all of the proverbial cards, why in the world would they want to sacrifice anything that they dont have to? Just to join your joke of a conference? No thanks gee we are good.

Being a ND fan from Ohio this is the kind of loud mouth garbage that has made me HATE o$u.

Before casting stones Mr. Gee, you should get your own house in order. What's the graduation rate for athletes attending OSU? What's the graduation rate for black athletes at OSU? Do your athletes even take any of the same classes the rest of the school takes?

The academics are a joke when compared to Notre Dame, Stanford, Duke, the Military Academies, Northwestern, etc. It's common knowledge that Northwestern is the class of the Big 10. OSU isn't even in the top half of the conference. Your number 1 rival puts your academics to shame.

If you want to be taken seriously by true universities, you will need to get rid of Pee Wee Herman as president and install a visionary leader that can be mentioned in the same breath as Father Jenkins and the University of Notre Dame. You certainly don't have that leader now.

Signed,
A Catholic of French-Canadian/Irish Persuasion

I should have qualified that with "To the best of my knowledge" instead.

When Gee arrived anyone who graduated from high school in Ohio got accepted. Now the average ACT of the incoming class--the largest in school history--is a 29. It's pretty tough to get in to the school now, it had never been like that before.

That's notable, but doesn't prove much on its own. For instance, a commensurate increase in selec7ivity* at Michigan would indicate that there are larger forces at work here than the influence of a single man.

I don't agree with the fundraising comment because if it were so easy 1) it would have already been done, 2) all of the B1G schools would be thriving too with their massive alumni bases. The improvements and advances at OSU have far outpaced the average.

That's not necessarily true either. As to (1), increases in alumni giving could be driven by a lot of things (perhaps the success of the football program under Tressell?) And as to (2), Michigan is OSU's only regional peer. Beating Indiana and Minnesota doesn't mean much; how is OSU under Gee doing vis-a-vis Michigan?

I do agree, slightly, that OSU was a sleeping giant. But I think its a copout to dismiss the successes in my opinion. Gee works for OSU as well as he could. His style would fail miserably at other places (he was basically fired from Brown), but has does wonders in Columbus.

Regardless, this is your wheelhouse, so I'll bow to your expertise.

*Again, internal server error until I changed the spelling of "selectivity"
