just a guess but since Kelly left i wonder if that impacted the punishment but as i write this pearl was fired...so i guess i don't know

Or only 1 uniform combo RT @KevinScarbinsky: Forcing Oregon to huddle would've hurt worse

lmao

On ESPN Brock Huard just said "this isn't a slap on the wrist, it's a pat on the back."

I have no single question that can describe how I personally cannot reconcile a program actually getting caught cheating, (writing a $25,000 check) and the (lack of) penalty they received.

Call me crazy, but since Kelly took a job with the Eagles, that show cause is meaningless. He could bomb badly and they wouldn't have his office cleared out before he was free and clear to cheat in the college ranks. Or am I reading this wrong?

And the scary thing is Kelly got pretty serious about finding an NFL landing spot, all at once. Anybody else think he may have been tipped off at that time?

And, what about Pearl?

I think the basic precedent is: Do whatever you want, just fess up to it and nothing will happen. Lie about anything, no matter how minuscule, feel the hammer.

So what exactly did they do? They paid a recruiting service...so did some of that money go to impermissible benefits to recruits? Just kind of curious as to what actually went down because that punishment practically wasnt even worth having an investigation

Model of Consistency...

Absolutely.

Bill Self of Kansas Jayhawks reprimanded for NCAA tournament outburst - ESPN

Coach Self's actions were out of line with the committee's expectations that championship participants act in a manner that represents the highest standards of sportsmanship."

The damage fell under NCAA guidelines that define misconduct as any "unsportsmanlike conduct, unprofessional behavior or breach of law, occurring from the time the championship field is announced through the end of the championship, that discredits the event or intercollegiate athletics."

My Punishments From 16 Months Ago Would Have Been Tougher!

In an effort to show their contriteness (and stem off USC like sanctions) Oregon offered to:

1.) NOT allow Lache Seastrunk to play for them next season.

2.) Make their players wear the same uniform at least twice in a season during 1 of the next 4 years.

3.) Have Student Focus Groups develop a Sackcloth and Ashes Motif Collared Tee Shirt for the coaching staff to wear at all non-televised games and closed practices.

4.) NOT accept individual donations from Phil Knight exceeding $100 million in any of the next 4 years.

5.) Make themselves BOWL INELIGIBLE for any bowl with a payout of less than $300,000.00 for the next 4 years.

Let's see here... Oregon is Nike's school of choice for corporate funding. The NCAA depends heavily on Nike's advertisement dollars and sponsorships. Connect the dots....

Jesus they're only losing 1 scholarship for two years, like that does anything.

ND imposes worse sanctions against itself by taking the moral high ground each and every year. Oregon will still have more players on scholarship than us over those two years. SMDH...

You're giving the NCAA waaaaaaay too much credit, Tommy. You really think they are capable of that type of coordination between the marketing/corporate sponsorship dept and the compliance/enforcement dept?

Re: the sanctions, the one that may really sting is the reduction of paid official visitors from 56 to 37 annually for 3 years. For a school like Oregon, that's going to really hurt their national recruiting efforts.

We typically self-sanction ourselves about ~3 scholarships a year just because of our recruiting model. Soooo.... yeahhhhhhhhh................. well done, NCAA. You had actual tangible proof of cheating and paying for a player and decided to go with the lightest punishment imaginable.

The time is now to cheat in CFB.

They will just hire a "recruiting service".

I almost feel like the NCAA doles out punishments with the intent of seeing what may work with the minimum amount of impact. I agree ND247 that limiting the official visits is the most painful penalty. Maybe the NCAA is waiting to see if that will have any sort of impact? Regardless, the "sanctions/punishments" are laughable.

No, a different one. There was an article a couple weeks ago about why now is a good time to cheat in college. Somebody (Lax, I believe) posted it in a thread on here and I didn't get a chance to read it...but would really like to.

I dont know of any teams that dont use those services, and considering that theres much much worse going on in college football, i honestly dont see why its that huge of a deal. Much less what an appropriate penalty would be. More schollys? Maybe, but if you look at how Oregon typically recruits, they seldom get 5 star talent and the bank on player development on the 3stars or less. Just my opinion but NCAA is needed on many more things of importance than this

They actually can't use a recruiting service, at least not publicly. One of the slaps on the wrist from the NCAA is no recruiting services for the next 3 years.

Oregon paid $25k to a man after he hand delivered a 5-star RB and you don't think that's a big deal?

Some of the national CFB analysts have praised the COI for punishing the real culprits-- Kelly and Lyles-- instead of the players via program-level sanctions. But they've squandered any benefit of the doubt they once enjoyed, so they're still getting crucified for inconsistency.

But how many of those teams pay top dollar to a service like this, and get a bunch of worthless garbage back in return? Let's not forget that the garbage didn't even get sent to the University of Oregon, until AFTER the story broke in the news. It was only AFTER the story broke, that Lyles scrambled to put together some kind of package for the University.

It was blatant cheating, and the NCAA did almost nothing about it. It really does make it look like the NCAA doesn't care, at all, about the principles that they pretend to stand on.
