Clemson hasn't really played much of anyone (Wofford, App State, Louisville), but their defense has been pretty stout. They are giving up less than 115(114.7) yards a game rushing.
Even though you might want to chalk that up to teams abandoning the running game because of a blowout (they beat Wofford by 39, and App State by 31), the Louisville game was close (it was 7-3 at the half, and only 17-10 at the start of the 4th Q)and Clemson gave up 19 yards rushing on 28 carries. So this should be a pretty good test of our running game. But don't be surprised if Kelly DOES throw the ball all over the field, especially if Clemson comes out with an extra guy in the box to guard against the run.
I would bet that Kizer gets a few designed "run w/pass option" plays called for him. That might give us the numbers required to run the ball effectively. And it might also bait Clemson into selling out against the run, leaving our receivers open often. Clemson does appear to have a pretty disruptive defense, though, as is evidenced by their 9.3 TFL/game. By comparison; with all of the penetration that ND has been getting, we only average 7.0 TFL/game.
So this will be an interesting game. I dare say that, win or lose, there will be some folks stroking out over the play calling tomorrow night.
