Talk shit. Whatever gets you mentally into the game. And listening to one of the college gameday final shows, one of them, I think Kevin Carter said their WR's outside of Mike Williams isn't that good so its not just KVR who thinks that.

As Herbie said on GameDay this past Saturday:

"When you lose say little, when you win say less."

Best to leave all the talking to the fans. Otherwise, you look a lot like the fat man in Arkansas.

Acting like these young men need motivation on either side is silly. People can claim bulletin board material all they want.

At the end of the day, they have 60 mins to show how well they've prepared, how locked in they play, how gifted they are.

I'm happy to be rolling with the Irish this weekend!

I disagree. I've played and coached, and bulletin board material has worked in both instances, even in rivalry games where you're already ready to go to war.

I remember playing in a big rivalry game, and everyone was pumped, and before the game one of the other players was talking all kinds of shit to me. As amped up as I was for a HUGE game (relatively speaking), that somehow got me to another level. And I remember coaching in a rivalry game, and our rivals had kinda run up the score late on us the previous year, and let us know about it after the game as well. So the next year, we were pumped for the game like always, and it was for the league title, but my team had that extra juice all week long because I was able to remind them about the bulletin board material the other team had given us.

So for me anyway, I love having bulletin board material. A hyped practice can get even more hyped, and your players can get even more done because of the extra juice flowing through their veins. JMHO.

All that's fine and well until you get smacked in the mouth. Then you forget what the other guy/coach/team even said. You only remember it when the clocks hits zero and you win the game. Not downplaying motivation as it is huge in sports, but the bulletin board, smack talking stuff only gets one so far. You still have to go out and whip that as*.

Assuming Tod Mcshay doesn't just pull this number out of his @ss: "For some perspective, 10 of our top 150 draft-eligible prospects will be playing in this game on Saturday, and all 10 of them will be wearing gold helmets. " Who would those 10 players be?

Who's been more impressive, Clemson or Notre Dame? (Insider)

If I had to guess (in no order):

1. Jaylon Smith
2 Sheldon Day
3. Ronnie Stanley
4. Will Fuller
5. Keivarae Russel
6. Nick Martin
7. Corey Robinson (I know 0 production but after a decent last season combined with ideal measurements he came into this year projected as high as a 1rst rounder)
8. Joe Schmidt
9. Max Redfeild
10. CJ Prosise

I have no idea about 7-10 maybe I'm missing someone extremely obvious?

There's no way we actually have the first 10 draft eligible prospects Saturday.... Is there? That's one of the most surprising 'numbers' I've ever seen if so.

First day is only round one..... so fuck no. But 10 top 150 means 10 in the first 5 rounds. 32 teams *5 rounds = 160, so top 150 would fall in there. Basically draftable players warranting a real pick, not a 6-7 round throw away that won't make the roster anyway.

Edit: wait nevermind, read your post wrong.

Nobody said anything about first day. Just that ND has 10 guys who are better prospects than Clemson's best one.

Draft eligible. I'm assuming McKenzie Alexander, the QB, a DL (they broadcasters said there is a DL who's going to be better than whoever just went in the 1st round for Clemson last year), would all make '10 most talented', even though they're not old enough to be draft eligible.

But still, that's awesome to know that we should have more top talent in the game.

Unless it's old school Miami level trash talk, bulletin board material is bs and it's used on the internet, networks and by fans and never makes it to that mythical locker room board.

It absolutely does make it there. Maybe not in baseball, but first hand from college football players, they know about it and the coaches make sure they know about it if they didn't already.

Agree, and the better prepared/talented team will win in those instances, no doubt. But when it's a close battle, and you've had that extra juice in practice and you’ve worked even harder because of it (yes, it is possible…I’ve done it and I’ve seen players do it), then it can and has made a difference. Bulletin board material didn’t just come from thin air…it’s a real thing.

I guess it's just me but I've seen it work multiple times.

Bulletin Board material definitely works. There was a quote from one of our rivals in the local paper before Homecoming, and we used that prior to the game, absolutely crushed the other team. We were fired up.

There was another year where an opposing team in the neighboring city was really good, and we were set to meet in our house after losing to them the previous few years. The night before the game someone sprayed that team's name on our field in the opposing team's red and black colors, you can imagine our team was pissed. I may have noticed cans of red and black spray paint in our HC's office, but it could have been my imagination. In any case, we throttled them.

You would think it would matter less the higher the competition level gets... all of our examples are High School, JC or low level college... I have them two, in both baseball and football, but both at the high school level or lower... one would think that once everyone is a scholly D1 athlete that bulletin board stuff would have a lesser impact.... no?

They're manufacturing slights to get themselves up for the game. Props to them, if it works. Seems like amateur hour, but that's Clemson for you. I'd be worried if we somehow move to be the favorite heading into the game, because that would be some actual bulletin board material.

Going to be hard to fire up the whole team over "did you see those purple face with horns emoticons!?!?" and "KVR said DeShaun Watson is good but probably not the best he's played... OMG!"

Still, I wish our guys kept their mouths completely shut. No doubt Clemson was going to be hyped for the game no matter what, but every little bit might matter.

I think. I'm confident in the first 7 + Prosise as all being 5th round or better talents at the moment. It's also possible that he was counting people that we've lost to injury in his 10 and misspoke a bit... guys like Jones, etc.

Something about ND players opening their mouths instantly takes me back to Brian Smith before that game at BC..... that ended not so well for us.

I can't seem to find it now, but a Vegas guy tweeted earlier that the line went from 2.5 pt dogs to 1 pt favorites.

I thought I had watched a segment on ESPN or something similar that essentially said bulletin board material is a myth in regards to the pros.

IDK

Let them get under the skin of the Clemson players. Ideally, it'll force Clemson to overthink and single out instead of playing assignment football.

If a team needs any further motivation to win a game besides the fact that winning is their SOLE MISSION, then they were already going to lose.

Not saying Clemson wasn't already motivated, but I agree the whole "bulletin board" BS is overdone only by people who don't even decide the outcome of the game.

Sure players may mention it after a win when asked about it, but they always fail to acknowledge the "extra motivation" after a loss.

Bulletin board material might matter if there's a reason one team wouldn't already be up for it. Not the case here, ESPN gameday, undefeated, night game, two top 10 teams, bulletin material doesn't matter. If this was maybe ND vs. a 2-1 Clemson team at noon and they were ranked #21, maybe. But this game has big implications. Some analysts still have Clemson in the final 4.

Strongside DE

Kevin Dodd, Jr. #1DT 2012 (6'4" 270 lbs)
Dane Rogers RS So.
Austin Bryant, Fr.

Weakside DE

Shaq Lawson, Soph. #1 DT 2013 (6'3" 275 lbs)
Richard Yeargin, RFr.
Chris Register, RFr.
Clelin Ferrell, Fr.
LaSamuel Davis, Fr.

They look real young after Dodd and Lawson. Both Dodd and Lawson are their primary DL tackles. Leading tackler is Goodson (LB) and a DB. I think it's fair to say we will need to neutralize their bookends.

What do we do? I think Stanley is probably gonna be ok but we may need.to provide some TE chips to McGlichey's side.

Let's just run it off tackle.

Line: down block.

QB: hand off and block backside rush. :p

RB: find lane and get north south.

Team O: chew clock and pancake.

Team D: wrap up, smash mouths.

Next.
