SBNation's Ian Boyd offers some good schematic insight into the ND-FSU matchup:

If the Irish can run the ball reasonably well, they have some great tools for combating FSU's favorite anti-spread tactics. But they'll still have to contend with crowd noise and a great deal of defensive speed. Their game in the mud against Stanford's defense will undoubtedly serve as solid prep.

Notre Dame was not built in a lab to beat the Seminoles, but they do have a chance to handle some of what FSU does on defense, some weapons to attack their young safeties deep rather than allowing the blazing fast FSU D to play downhill, and some tools for stopping Winston.

But at the end of the day, the most dominant feature in this game is still the Florida State passing game. If Notre Dame responds to Winston throwing to Greene like it did against Alabama's running game two years ago, then FSU will maintain its drive towards the Playoff.

And Tomahawk Nation's preview of the ND is worth a read. Some of the predictions at the end are especially amusing.

I think it's great that Tomahawk Nation even does the math for their readers. Call it a Jameis friendly site.

Goals
•Less than 5.0 yards a play before garbage time (250 yards on 50 plays, 300 yards on 60 plays, 350 yards on 70 plays).

Is Notre Dame better than Clemson?? I think they are. Is FSU better with Winston? Obviously.

Is the collective difference enough for an Irish win? Probably less than 50%, but close enough to have real hope.

That's how i see it.

I think we're offensively better than Clemson because they have such a young QB. But their defensive front 7 I'd take over ours. I know they got housed against Georgia, but when I watch the FSU game I saw a front 7 that was very legit.

I think this game comes down to the run game and Folston. I don't think we can win with Kelly giving Cam the majority of the snaps, knowing Cam will get 2-4 yards every play and be okay and risk-free. Kelly/Alford also clearly don't trust Bryant to carry it 15+ times. We need Folston to make guys miss like he's shown than he can. He's got to be able to turn the no-gain plays into runs of 4-5 yards, and bust off the occasional 8-12 yard run.

I'm imagining a disaster scenario where FSU is stuffing the run and putting a safety over Fuller and we're screwed. We need to force FSU to gameplan for the run game.

To add, don't underestimate the impact of the current hatred that's out there towards FSU right now. Not only will folks *have to* take us seriously if we win, they'll also be pulling for us to win. Notre Dame is the rebel alliance going up against the galactic empire in this game. I don't think there's been a time since I've followed college football where the whole country will be cheering for the Irish.

Whoa, you totally underestimate the hate for the Irish. Few teams are as polarizing as we are. There are plenty of fans from teams that love nothing more than to see us embarrassed at any opportunity, even if that embarrassment came from Winston. There certainly will be fans that will pull for us over FSU just to prevent them from repeating, but among the other football boards I frequent I can tell you there are strong pockets of Irish haters. We're perceived to be "entitled" because of the NBC contract and media attention. We're painted as overrated. We're depicted often as haughty, arrogant, self righteous, and hypocrites. There certainly will be people pulling for us to provide an upset, but don't underestimate the Irish haters. "If Notre Dame and ISIS were playing, I would cheer for ISIS."

For all those who are skrong, crab legs on me.

I'm skrong if you skrong. You payin' for dem legs dis time?

I've never seen a fanbase revel in being the bad guys as much as FSU. They seem to genuinely like being universally despised.

Miami certainly comes to mind, but you're certainly right.

Yep.

If both teams played their average game, FSU will win by 10 IMO.

If ND plays well and FSU plays average, it's 50/50.

If ND plays well and FSU plays poorly, ND wins by 10.

It's not unlikely that ND wins this thing, but it is certainly not probable either.

The more I look at this game the more I think their sociopath at QB embraces all the hate and rallies the troops for their best performance of the year.

I know I've been going on and on about how ND can win this game but:
1. FSU is getting healthier/deeper on defense for this game than they have been at certain points this year where their D has looked vulnerable.
2. Blitzing Jameis Winston has never really worked for anyone so why should it work now?
3. Sociopath factor described above.

I think FSU probably wins something like 45-24 if Jameis does what I'm saying he will in terms of intrinsic motivation. I think if this was a "normal" game we'd probably have a good shot of winning something like 37-34.

One thing I've noticed based on watching FSU, is I think we can pick on Darby on quick pass/WR screens. But we shouldn't test #26 at all. Big, strong, athletic corner who will blow that up.

Darby's charmin soft though at tackling.

BK said that there was "no comparison" between preparing for UNC's running QB and preparing for FSU. Yet I've seen so many high-lights of JW running and scoring...I'm actually worried about what JW is going to do with his legs.

They are really only getting one player back, Matthew Thomas. Darby has been battling injury all season, and while he will play, he wont be 100%. The biggest problem they have had is in the defensive front, where they lost Timmy Jernigan. This is still a problem we can attack. Also, and I can't believe no one has talked about this, but there was a big scuffle in their practice yesterday where Jalen Ramsey was kicked out of practice for laying out Winson. He very well may not play and he's their 7th leading tackler in an injury laden secondary. They are a good defense... but they aren't as good as say, Stanford.

2. Blitzing Jameis Winston has never really worked for anyone so why should it work now?

We aren't going to blindly blitz. If anyone can package different looks for Winston, it's BVG. This FSU offensive line has a bunch of young guys and I watched Syracuse get a push all game long against them. If Syracuse can get pressure without blitzing, we should be able to as well.

3. Sociopath factor described above.

Every sociopath has a breaking point where they go full Patrick Batemen. The pressure on Winston is higher than it has ever been. The Title IX suit is happening, he knows (imo) that he lied to his coach about the signatures and wonders if he'll get caught. The pressure is different this week than it's been since the original rape accusations. Furthermore, there are signs that the pressure is getting to the entire team. Look at Jalen Ramsey's case. Yesterday's practice was certainly not a clean practice. They watched their teamate get berated by Fisher all of the way to the tunnel after essentially disrespecting his fellow teammates. Things are not perfect in Tallahassee.

Here's the story on Ramsey.

Jalen was kicked out of practice on Sunday...this is at least the 3rd time he has, 2x's this year now

all but 1 starter is a senior on the OLINE....the lone one is redshirt freshman center who is in for their starter who broke his arm

and they get one of their dlineman back which could move mario edwards into his natural position of DE which he is a handful from there

Right. And I thought Kelly was very realistic about blitzing last night in his post-practice comments. He basically said, you can't just throw exotic blitzes at Winston and expect to confuse him. He's too good for that. You have be very judicious in choosing when to blitz. It sounded like they have a plan for it. We'll see how it works out.

The scUM game was like the super-lite version of the FSU game.

Similar, multiple-look offenses.

Defenses good against the run, not so much against the pass.

Mobile QB that has the ability to tear you apart.

Questionable running games.

Michigan might be a dumpster fire, but I think it was perfect practice for FSU. BVG was cooking up all kinds of sh*t that confused scUM's multiple-style offense. Winston handles the blitz well, but I'm willing to bet that he hasn't seen this level of confusion yet.

Not only that, but things were drawn up very well against scUM for Jaylon to flash to the athletic QB when he tried taking off. AKA, a perfect primer for a chess match with Jameis.

My biggest worry is O'Leary. He's not an athletic nightmare, and yet he is ALWAYS open. We'll see what BVG does to counter that. Is it going to be Councell getting a shot? Onwualu? Farley? Shumate?

What? Any backstory on that?

-Florida Statedefensive back Jalen Ramsey was kicked out of practice Sunday after the sophomore was involved in several physical plays, the last ending in quarterback Jameis Winston being knocked to the ground.

Coach Jimbo Fisher said Ramsey was warned and called it a lack of leadership and character.

"He was told not to do something and he defied me," Fisher said. "We'll judge from there.

"He'll decide if he wants to play at Florida State."

Last season, Ramsey started 14 games and became the first freshman to start at cornerback at Florida State since Deion Sanders. He was seventh on the team with 49 tackles, and added a sack, an interception, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery and a quarterback hurry.

Ramsey scuffled with starting running back Karlos Williams and later shoved receiver Kermit Whitfield in the back after a play. He also crushed tight end Ryan Izzo during a non-tackling period. The final straw came when Ramsey blitzed off the edge and ran through Williams, who was pass blocking, and knocked him into the legs of the reigning Heisman winner. Fisher immediately kicked him out after Winston hit the ground and berated Ramsey all the way until he was in the tunnel.

"You're going to do things my way or they're not going to play here," Fisher said. "When I tell somebody to do something and they don't do it, it's serious. That's how you have problems."
