If Tranquill can;t go against NW, who gets the start in his place? Very interested to see the 2 deep at Buck.

Drew White replaced him against Navy. FWIW. I'd like to see Shayne Simon out there.

I was thinking about this replacement as intriguing as well, considering NW's well documented struggles running the ball and Simon's strengths in coverage.

Even if he doesn't start, I"m sure he will get plenty of PT Saturday at Rover at the very least.

Receive the opening kickoff and score a TD. Hold NW to a three and out. Tone set.

Kelly said Tranquill is day to day and would label it as questionable. He'll be a limited participant at practice today. Said that JGH and Drew White would get shots at the position today in practice.

I was chatting with an older ND alum during the Navy tailgate and he said the following: "If you told me I'd be more worried about playing Northwestern than Florida State & SC, I'd tell you I'd had to have lived a helluva lot longer than 85 years."

The only traps in this game are the ones the OL produce that Dex runs for TDs of 65, 72, and 80 yards. The Irish win by 3 scores.

The BTN crew is horrendously bias when it comes to OOC games.

With that said, I think NW is a real fighting dog here. Isasiah Bower has two straight 100 yard games, and the defense held Taylor to under 100 yards for the first time in 8 games. Plus Thornton is a prime time player.

With that said, Irish roll. Thornton is clearly hampered by his recovery from injury and has been sacked 18 times this year. Plus his TD/INT ratio is at 1. Pump the boys up BK, and come home 9-0 so I can watch the undefeated Irish against FSU.

They've got a respectable defense. S&P+ rates them 31st against the run, 37th against the pass, 54th on standard downs, and 17th on passing downs. That matches up pretty well against our offense, so I doubt we'll hang 40+ on them.

But their offense is hot garbage: 105th overall, 114th rushing, and 83rd passing. Against our 6th ranked defense, the Wildcats are really going to struggle to move the ball.

As impressive as this is to finally contain the beast that is Taylor, Hornibrook (as $hitty of a QB as he is) didn't even play. They started his backup, so I'm sure they stacked the box more than they normally would have against Wisconsin.

They can't employ such a one-dimensional defense against us, Book will shred them. NW will be forced to be multiple, and Long needs to call a game plan to keep them off balance.

I have confidence that he does. I don't think it will be a drubbing, but ND should pull away in the second half.

Yes, I did not mention that Hornibrook was missing. Helpful information.

We supposed to be impressed by 225 yards on 58 carries against the 76th and 115th ranked rushing defenses?

Taylor did not look right at all. I would bet he was nursing a not insignificant injury. Not to say that Northwestern’s front 7 was unimpressive.

Watching the Badger/Northwestern game right now.

This is the best tackling team we've faced since Michigan. Very disciplined and gets you to the ground.

That's all I got.

They've got the best defense we've played since Michigan, period. Really the only decent defense we've played all year... 28th by S&P+, 32nd by FEI. This will be a test of whether the Ian Book show is the real deal or a mirage built on playing teams that can't cover or tackle.

Northwestern's offense, however, ranks 105th by S&P+ and 78th by FEI. The game is simple... defense should hold them under 20, offense should score 20+. Just need to execute. They will certainly have the emotional edge heading into this game.

The defensive line should feast. They're going to have a hard time with the speed, length and athleticism of the Tillery and the D ends. NW can definitely pull an upset but it'll be hard for their offensive line to get movement and/or keep their QB clean.

They way Northwestern pulls an upset, IMO, is that our offense plays like butt and we score less than 3 TDs. Their defense is good enough to make plays against our sketchy OL and finesse driven offense. The same way Purdue beat Ohio State by getting their offense to go one dimensional and self-destruct is how Northwestern beats Notre Dame (minus the 49 points). If ND jumps on them early they won't look back, but if Northwestern gets any kind of lead... hold on to your butts.

The two things that concern me:

NW will no doubt bring pressure up the middle as that’s where Book has shown a weakness. Hopefully, his experience with that now will focus on finding is outlets and it’s also a great time to hit Boykin deep or hand off to Dexter for a long run. If Book doesn’t have an answer for that pressure, expect to hear Paddy Fisher’s name a lot.

Thorson/Nagel concern me from an ND defensive perspective. Usually, it seems good QBs like Thorson have career defining days vs ND. While I bet he even rooted for ND as a kid and was disapponted when the Irish didn’t have him on their recruiting radar. Nagel’s brother, Aaron, once played for the Irish before transferring to NW. Besides that background, Thorson to Nagel is a good combo in the Wildcats’ offense.

I haven’t watch enough of Thorson but I assume w/ his experience he is apt at getting the ball out early. They’ll focus on that to neutralize our pass rush. We’ll hear 1,000,000 times how he is less than one year out from his ACL surgery. Doesn’t matter, he can still run well enough to be a threat & a nuisance.
