One of these days, you guys willwise up and realize ESPN is good for two things and two things only. Catching up on scores and watching games. I quit going to their web sites a couple of years ago and I haven't missed it a bit. It's hit ans miss on their radio broadcast for quality. They have an agenda which is to make money and because they don't have the biggest money making college in their back pocket they will always give the cold shoulder the ND.

This years class has a lot different feel from last years. Even when Shepard commited things didn't feel right. Deontay was the same way. From what I read, it felt like they had to have their arms twisted to commit. Neither ever sounded like they were happy to be Irish. This class is putting out a totaly different vibe.

The difference isn't going to be the number of 4 & 5 star recruits. It's going to be the hidden gems that only get a 3 star for what ever reason. All of the good teams will be loaded with 4 & 5 star players. It's the 3 star players that are better than advertised that typically make the team better. They add solid depth or work their way into getting prominent playing time that allows the team to make that extra play.

This class is very good and could end up even better.

To answer the only question I saw, yes before last year. Floyd's class partially, as I was spending most of my time then on football/baseball/basketball/girls being in high school.

I think this year's class is a lot different than last years, imo.

As to Acamp's OP on the topic, I never disagreed. We have been in a similar position since Kelly has taken over, and the late losses have hurt us, but as I said above I think this year's class seems to be saying the right things.

I think someone else mentioned before that the staff was pushing BCS last year and it hurt us in the end.

clearly, I hope you're right...

So it sounds like ESPN is ranking classes by Average Rating rather than Team Total Points as 15 x 81.66 = 1228 (ND) while 13 x 82.307 = 1070 (FSU). Is that their method NDdomer2?

Again I'm not an Insider, just postulating off limited info.

I would have to run the numbers for teams 1-8, so give me a couple here.

But,I was interested to see what the avg rating was once we were discussing the difference between FSU and us. They only have two players in the 70's at 79 and 78 while we have three at 79,77,76.

Well, didn't take me long to debunk the average per theory.

Michigan has 22 commits, 20 who are rated, and those 20 average out to 82.4.

Florida has 18 commits, all who are rated, and they average out to 83.22.

Just like them significantly dropping Gunner when he enrolled at ND instead of LSU.

So what is the basis of the rankings as you have access to their full listing?

It appears to have something to do with how many top tier 4 stars each school has. While we have more 4 stars, they actually have more in the ESPN150 (6 - FSU, 4 - ND). Those in the ESPN150 must get weighted more then those outside the top 150

As ab2c mentioned I think it is kind of a weighted ranking system taking into account # of commits, # of espn 150, # of espn 300, # of commits per * level, and rating per.

I am assuming there is some human digression as well.

It is quite silly. Luginbill has admitted there's no real system in place for ESPN's player rankings; why should their team rankings be any different?

they could just eyeballl need per team, how that class fills the needs... play overall quality into it somehow and just rank the classes...

coming from espn that shouldn't shock anyone.

ESPN actually created podcast for Berman to explain, in great detail, how he'd never even thought about doing MNF PBP & blindsided by offer.

27 Jun SPORTSbyBROOKS ‏@SPORTSbyBROOKS
ESPN is so self-important that it didnt merely have Berman deny interest in MNF to try to defuse irate fans from blaming him for the move.

ESPN knows 1) it is indulging Berman 2) he campaigned for it 3) fans lose. Berman's elaborate denial = PR ruse @ESPNBook @profootballtalk

I think ESPN puts a lot of weight on ESPN 150 recruits, but other than that, I believe it is more opinion based than anything else. It is which class do they like better; they dont really have a system in my opinion.

Moved up to #8 on Rivals and #3 on 247....wow

Heck yeah! With fewer recruits than Florida, Georgia, A&M, South Carolina and LSU who we're ranked ahead of in the top 10... and fewer recruits than Michigan/Alabama who are the only teams we're behind.

Landing Anzalone might put us ahead of Michigan with 3 fewer recruits. That sh*t would be cray.

Boom.

I take the offer list 10 out of 10 times. It's no offense to guys over at 247, Scout, etc but I'll trust the football minds at powerhouses like 'Bama, UFA, UT, OU, pOSU, scUM, etc

Starting to temper my opinion of 247. New rankings feature no bump for Montelus (87 rating, 3:s:) and Butler, who they had said was getting a bump, instead lost a point down to an 87. I think the Butler rating is fair even if it flies in the face of what they said a couple weeks ago, but Montelus being a 3:s: is bat **** crazy.

Bivin moved up a bit and Kinlaw down a smidge in the most recent rankings. Seems like Elmer dropped a couple more points too.

Jaylon moving down to 7 is crazy the way this kid has worked at the camps. Should be in the top 3 easy IMHO..but i am very biased

Yeah, I looked at it again and I don't think he moved down as much as Max Browne jumped into the top 5 from the teens. Which is pretty crazy to me... I guess maybe he had some impressive camps?
