Welcome, David. Not many young men have three good well-thought reasons why they pick a school!

Blue and Gold free story, written after his commit to BK Thursday night and released after his public announcement:

There aren't too many occurrences in the recruiting process that has the potential to sting more than losing out on a local standout.

While Notre Dame is normally on the end of the spectrum where their efforts are focused on reeling talent away from other in-state programs, this time around the coaches were trying to protect where they stood with yet another South Bend native - David Perkins.

The Irish found recent success on the nearby recruiting front by landing Daniel Smith, who is the brother-in-law of former Irish safety Gerome Sapp, from Clay High School in the 2010 recruiting class.

Washington High's Perkins had been on the radar, but programs like Michigan Arizona, Boston College, Illinois, Iowa, Michigan State, Purdue and others had stepped up to offer.

When Notre Dame had a meeting scheduled on June 2 with plans to extend an offer, Irish head coach Brian Kelly asked four-star Perkins about his timetable regarding a college decision.

The 6-2, 210-pound prospect looked up at the clock in the room.

"Then I said well shoot, how about now," Perkins reported to BlueandGold.com after the meeting.

It was the offer he had been waiting on.

"Coach Kelly was excited and I can tell they really like me," he added. "I feel comfortable with that and I like that."

Perkins was a regular on campus dating back to last fall through this past spring. He stayed in contact with the Irish staff and always knew where he stood regarding a scholarship offer. WHen the good news finally came, he quickly made it official.

"The plan that they set out for me," Perkins began. "The strong relationship that I built with the coaches. Notre Dame, it's not just a four-year decision. This is something to be proud of having an education from there, moving forward even after football, it's a great thing to carry on your résumé. They recruit great players, great people and all in honesty, I do believe Notre Dame will win the National Championship and I will be part of it."

In his junior season, Perkins rushed for 783 yards on just 85 carries, while catching another 10 passes for 180 yards, with six total touchdowns. Defensively, Perkins racked up 63 tackles with 23 coming for a loss including 13 sacks.

Perkins said Notre Dame is recruiting him as an athlete. One of the most versatile athletes in the country, he could play running back, outside linebacker or even receiver, safety and defensive end on the next level. The two positions most speculated upon are running back and outside linebacker.

He makes No. 10 for the 2012 recruiting class.

This staff is putting together an incredibly versatile recruiting class and team in general. Word to other recruits, the bus is filling up, if you want to go to ND you better not wait too long!

Very excited to see David coming off the edge with a "bad attitude". He has the type of love of the game and swagger / confidence that I think we have been lacking recently.

Where is it mentioned that he's definitely coming in at OLB and not RB?
