In a time of strife in South Bend, IN and beyond, many Irish fans are getting antsy, and starting to talk about potentially compromising the University's traditional values in order to bring back the glory years on the gridiron. I've seen many a statement, this week, to the effect of "I don't care what kind of person they are, throw money at a coach who can win NOW, and get them in here."

Enter Lane Kiffin and his band of merry thugs............

The arrests of Tennessee's four freshman footballers should serve as a warning. Imagine the outcry, if these had been ND players? Not only would the media circle like sharks around blood in the water, but so would the ND haters, and so would the loyal followers of ND football. We would all be devastated. So just consider this, should Weis be fired at the end of the season. Don't let your desire to be able to once again gloat about your team, amongst your friends and coworkers, trump your desire to root for a team that "does it right".

24 "legal incidents" at Florida since Meyer was hired for all those who still want him.

We've had a few guys get in trouble, not armed robbery and all that though. With ND's admissions standards, those type of guys aren't getting in here, regardless of coach.

You guys are right. Urban Meyer, that basterd, a devote catholic put those players in the situations to which they got in trouble with the law!!!!!

I heard he makes his players join street gangs and steal things so they become better football players! Not only that, he also has ties to terrorist organizations too, saying he wants his players to put "terror into their opponents"!

ND dont want him, because we dont want proven winners who recruit amazingly who coached with Holtz and still coaches in the Holtz style. We all hated that guy and his winning ways. They cost us the integrity of ND itself.

He's had 24 arrests since he's been there. Maybe one or two is a fluke, but not 24. It just means he doesn't care whatsoever what his players do off the field as long as they keep playing well on it.

you are absolutely right.
meyer cant stop them from doing that stuff off the field. they dont have a 24 hour/day curfew.
we do need to lessen the academic standards here so we can get better players.and dont say no, because we've done it before when we needed to.

A real coach doesn't stop coaching when the game or practice is over.

So...basically we should be happy with a bad coach because his players haven't committed a crime?
Wow great logic there. how bout we get a winning coach that doesn't have his players committing crimes? I like that option...like lets see Pete someone.
sorry dude but dumb thread. Its really just insulting to think those are our only two options, a bad coach without incident or a good coach with criminals....

he turned us down because we tried to rush him into a decision. he wanted to take some time to look around and we pushed too much.

Pete Carroll? The man who coached the outstanding young man who shouted "I OWN THE POLICE!" fleeing a party in 2005? The player who grinded on Erin Andrews in front of 90,000+, not to mention the millions watching on national television? The man who coached the player who needed to ask where Green Bay was?

Yep. That's one player. One was just a minor arrest and the other is not a big deal at all and I'm not sure why you brought it up. Yep, Carroll is really running Al-Queda over at SC...

It's not a dumb thread, you just read more into it than was intended. This isn't about keeping Weis to avoid having someone with no scruples. It's about if Weis is fired, not forgetting the principles of ND, in order to satisfy ourselves with instant wins. Nowhere in my original post did I mention anything about keeping Weis. Do try to keep up, IB.

and i know that notre dame will.

How about the allegations of rampant steroid abuse, or the free housing for a star tailback's family?

Allegations is the key word in that one, and obviously you can't overlook the whole Bush scenario, but don't go saying that the USC players are as thugish as Florida's or the usual SEC ones.

I would agree with that, wholeheartedly. USC's guys are almost saints, compared to the worst of the SEC. However, Carroll's program has still displayed alot of behavior that should never be condoned, at ND.

I wouldn't be too upset with it besides the Bush scandal stuff. I mean, Hand got caught with a prostitute and Demetrius Jones had pot in his car. It's hard to have a perfect program. USC has been pretty far low.

And what I am going to say about steroids is that they are a bigger problem in football than a lot of us would like to acknowledge. I would not be shocked if there were some ND linemen juicing. Obviously it is a bad thing, but I wouldn't go around throwing stones about something that can so easily be covered up.

I'm not saying you are wrong for being ok with it, but I, personally, don't EVER want to see Snoop Dogg, or anyone else of his ilk, wandering the ND sidelines and hanging around the program like he does at 'SC.

Yeah I am not a fan of that. Although I think Snoop was a good rapper, he's not who I would want to have around my program. Will Ferrell would be nice though.

wrong, meyer didn't come to nd cuz of recruiting. he realized that it would take a nation wide focus and it would take him away from his family for a better part of the year.

he wanted to wait 'til his youngest girl was off to college. at florida, he doesn't have to recruit nation wide. allowing him to be at home more.

Don't confuse not wanting a coach currently running a "less than desirable" program with wanting to keep Charlie. kmoose was simply stating that a Meyer or Kiffin type is not the answer. Never did he say that Charlie was.

Just my two cents, we don't need to lower academic standards. All our players are supposedly good and its not like they go to class anyway so it wouldn't really matter.

Secondly, our football players are not saints, sure they don't go around committing armed robbery and assaulting random people, but don't start to think that they are angels.
