I hope this wasn't the buzz TP was referring to

According to Pat Forde, former Michigan and San Jose State offensive coordinator Al Borges will interview for the offensive coordinator job this week with the Irish. Our understanding of this visit is just that. Borges, sources tell FootballScoop, is not a candidate for the job.

The Scoop - Sunday December 18, 2016 - FootballScoop

I like what you're reporting but I do not understand interviewing for a job you're not a candidate for. So if they interview him, he's a candidate as far as I'm concerned.

Football Scoop is saying it's just visit, not interview. Just picking his brain probably.

Could it just be a "visit" to pick his brain on some things, being mis-reported as an interview?

Brian Driskel must not have gotten the memo that it was just a visit, and he went on a quick rant about how bad that'd be. Or as much of a rant you can go on when you cover a particular team. It was kind of funny because I can picture him fuming behind the scenes.

Hey Kendal, tell us a bit about how you structured an offense to utilise RG3's unique skillset. Coffee and lunch is on the house.

Hey Al, tell us a bit about how you structured an offense to utilise Denard's unique skillset. Coffee and lunch is on the house.

Next week: Rhett Lashlee interviews for Notre Dame OC position !!!

Week after that: Denbrock named Notre Dame OC, Trooper Taylor hired as WR coach...

Who has Borges worked with that could be attractive as an OC?

At his two big successes Auburn and Michigan he was fired when the success faded. Things soured badly.

He's a journeyman coach. Spent the first 10 years at high school/JC level. Then 6 years at Portland St. Moved on for 2 years at Boise. Since Portland he's spent 24 years at 9 schools. I think 4 years was the longest gig in that span.

He's also a QB coach and that might be the interest. He developed Cade McKnown and Jason Campbell into 1st Round draft choices. He also got the most out of Denard Robinson who was more Athlete than QB.

Borges might more likely be a possibility for an off field analyst, a position Saban has used to revolutionized college football.

Al Borges? The guy Michigan let go of so they could "steal" Alabama's OC?

Borges got a bit of a bad rep. He wasn't working with much offensive skill talent at Michigan, and the guy he was coaching for was a boob and Darrell Funk is literally the worst offensive line coach in the entire world.

Borges is a solid QB coach and a really creative play-caller. His biggest problem was that he was too creative- the kids at Michigan weren't picking up everything he was trying to implement. He was trying to do way too much, should've just simplified things and kept it simple.

Borges is a shitty recruiter though. Like really bad.

If ND hired him as a QB coach only, wouldn't be that bad of a hire IMO.

Wouldn't be that bad of a hire? To someone who wants to see ND struggle, perhaps not. But for those who want to see ND succeed, Borges would not be a good choice.

As an OC- yeah it's a bad hire. Not sure I'd trust him to recruit and run an entire offense.

As a QB Coach/Passing Game Co-ordinator - it wouldn't be a bad hire at all- assuming there was a good OC in place and that guy was a good recruiter.

My thoughts exactly.

With the advent of all of these "analyst" coaches, there is absolutely no reason to ever hire a field assistant or coordinator who cannot/will not recruit.

Want Borges as an analyst...I can see that, but NO MORE BVG nonsense...EVER.

BTW...BVG probably would have made a killer analyst because you could give him one defensive package within the scheme to scheme each week, and he'd likely come up with something really good. But you gotta keep that guy in the bumpers, so to speak.
