I watched an oldie with Ronald Reagan this weekend. He was in his 30's at the time the movie was made. It got me to wondering if he had any thoughts of getting into politics back then or did it come later?

Just watched "The Next Three Days" with Russell Crowe. Made back in 2009, but had never heard of it. Pretty good flick. Remake of a french movie that is supposed to be based on a true story.

Wife goes to jail for killing her boss. Once her appeals are exhausted, he spends his time planning to help her escape. Elizabeth Banks plays his wife and Liam Neeson has a brief appearance as a guy who has broken out of prison seven times.

I just watched the Hellboy reboot. I really enjoyed it. A lot has to do with Hopper from Stranger Things taking over Ron Pearlman's lead role. The other is the gore is epic. Like all time great.

Full disclosure: It got horrible reviews. Don't care, still liked it.

Watched The Poison Rose with John Travolta, Morgan Freeman and Brandon Frazier. Overall plot was decent, but Travolta was terrible. Would have been much better with someone else in the lead role.

WAIT. Brendan Fraser is back???

I say get the band back together: Him, Astin and Pauly Shore and film Malibu Man, the long awaited follow up to Encino Man.

That was 27 years ago, ouch.

I saw The Farewell last night. Good film, pretty good acting, definitely lacking a bit in the 3rd act

awful movie. not sure if it was Travolta or bad dialog writing, or both that were so bad.

TCM featured Bogart Sunday. While I’ve seen most everything he’s done, it’s been a while since I watched The Big Sleep with Bacall. The plot was hard to follow but after it was over the host explained that it was to be released in 1944, then they held up the release so parts could be rewritten. The changes were shot over the course of a couple of years by different writers then released in 46.

Well that explains the ball bearings and the extra key!

I watched Freeway, starring Reese Witherspoon, this week. It's a black comedy that could pass as a documentary on the white trash lifestyle. I'm not a huge Witherspoon fan, but she tears the part up. Funny movie and worth the watch.

Recently rewatched Silence by Scorsese again.

Incredible movie. Amazingly shot and acted. An extremely uncomfortable film on faith and martyrdom that I found myself wrestling with again the second time even after I had made peace with my own opinion on the actions of Rodrigues.

Two I watched this week:

The Edge Of Seventeen. I'm not usually a fan of teen girl angst films, but this one was well done and not the usual shallow fluff. Woody Harrelson was great as a jaded and sarcastic school teacher.

The Help. I expected this one to be good, but it was even better than I'd hoped for. Really good movie in every way.

Saw Rambo with my action movie obsessed father in law... I'm surprised they got away with some of the themes...

Slow day at work, watched 'Annihilation' on Amazon Prime.

Wow, this movie didn't get the release or credit it deserved.

Trippy sci-fi/horror film that I really enjoyed. Natalie Portman was great.

Not quite sure what I think was going on with the ending... which means it was a good, ambiguous ending (or perhaps I'm just not smart).

I watched the first 10 mins and I can't wait to finish this. Scorsese does amazing things and he's tackling a very difficult topic.

So funny all you hear about these days is movies needing to be inclusive and how there should be more leading roles for women. Then a movie like Annihilation comes out that's bad ass and the whole ensemble is female and no one even mentions it.

Downton Abby

Downton Abby

Violet, Maggie Smith, still delivering pithy barbs of steel. Non-stop interaction without 8 shots of the same explosion, nor blood and gore, nor tsunamis. The movie takes place over about 3 days when a card arrives announcing the King and Queen will stop in for dinner. Kinda of like having the President stop by with all the secret service, food tasters, etc arriving in force and displacing the locals. Fellowes adds in the General Strike of 1926, the Battle for Irish Liberation, family loyalties, women's rights, and gay rights, amid important things like family squabbles.

Critic reviews range for wonderful to meh. I enjoyed it thoroughly.

This is my next movie to watch. I loved the series, so expecting the movie to be great. Maggie Smith is always awesome.

Finally watched Midsommar. Good, but not great. Pugh is very good. Loved the cliff scene.
I've seen several films with similar storylines, and this is probably the most well done.

I enjoyed it. It's nowhere near as good as Hereditary though IMO. I did think the opening sequence was incredible.

I liked Hereditary too, but the ending was crap IMO.

Honestly, I think they could have done better with the endings of both movies.

I just hate when a very solid movie with good acting ends with a lazy or poor attempt to be "deep", thought provoking, or existential.

Hereditary was building towards that ending the whole way through?

For the hype Hereditary had it was very disappointed. Best horror movie of the past 15 years is still the Conjuring

Since y'all are talking horror films (though perhaps it's not quite horror), Guadagnino's remake of Suspiria last year was great. Highly recommend it. That dude really knows his way around the camera.
