The Ushers need to not be assholes and stop acting like the fucking gestapo. Nothing kills the mood more when you're supposed to be cheering loudly while the team is on defense and some usher is poking you asking to see your student ID and you have to pull up your ticket to prove that the name matches.

Tillery and Coney graded out well this week.

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Nick Bosa's dominant performance on Saturday landed him on the <a href="https://twitter.com/PFF_College?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">@PFF_College</a> Team of the Week:<a href="https://t.co/CvbymqvboD">https://t.co/CvbymqvboD</a> <a href="https://t.co/QhBvK3rYDS">pic.twitter.com/QhBvK3rYDS</a></p>— Pro Football Focus (@PFF) <a href="https://twitter.com/PFF/status/1036588623515340801?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">September 3, 2018</a></blockquote>

For the lazy:

Jerry Tillery, Notre Dame
Week 1 grade: 92.2

Tillery might have been the best player on the field against Michigan. Moving all across the line, he beat nearly every Wolverine offensive lineman at least once. He was very good in run defense, but it was his sack and two other hurries from an interior position that was particularly telling.

Te’Von Coney, Notre Dame
Week 1 grade: 87.5

The quality of linebacker play was so good, we needed to find a way to get Coney on our team so the “flex” position allowed us that opportunity. Coney was superb in all facets of play, grading well as a run defender, in coverage and as a pass-rusher, where he managed a sack and hurry on just four blitzes.

BTW, be careful if you go into the new Duncan Student Center. We went into the center to take a look. They scanned our tix. After checking it out we went back out. Well guess what? If they scan your ticket, it means your entering the stadium with no reentry allowed! About 45 minutes before kickoff, we tried to enter the stadium only to be told we couldn't go back in. We explained to the usher that we hadn't been in. He then called another guy over. The second guy was a dick and said sorry no reentry. After explaining that we were not aware that entering the center is the same as entering the stadium, he said sorry, that's the rules. I asked to speak to a supervisor. After explaining what happened, they let us in. As we're walking in, the smart ass usher replies, "This is your lucky day".

ND needs to post signs and have the ushers in the centers inform those entering what the rules are. I was about to go into cardiac arrest! lol

Aha, this sounds like my experience. When ND was playing Utah a couple years back we were watching the game inside the tent at the Morris Inn. The game was mid-way through the 3rd quarter and I walked over to the stadium just to see if someone was outside with tickets still. While I was standing there looking around an middle aged guy walks up, asks me what I'm looking for and I tell him a ticket. He hands me his ticket and says "it's all yours kid, go have fun".

I attempt to walk into the stadium to have my ticket scanned and the scanner beeps, usher looks at me with suspicion. He starts accusing me of having a fake ticket and when I deny it he asks me where I got it and waves over a nearby police officer. I'm like 16 at the time so I'm freaking out. I tell the cop my story and he believes me instantly but tells me he obviously can't let me in. The whole time the usher was standing behind the cop acting all big-chesty, shaking his head and "yupping" everything the cop is telling me.

A little pissed, I walked back to the tent and watched our Irish pull out the victory.

Any feedback from recruits apart from it was great. All comments on II are premium. Any chance of any commitments either for 2019 or 2020. Seems a shame if such a great night, great result and great atmosphere doesn’t lead to anything positive.

I saw the recruits going up the ramp against the flow of the exiting students. They were all singing and bouncing and deafeningly loud coming out of the stadium. Witnessed three of the recruits saying 'Wow!' as the river of green rolled past them. The students made a great impression on those kids.

While I was reading the accolades rightfully pouring in for Kareem, I had a random thought about Jay Hayes. So I checked out his first game at Georgia and against Austin Peay he tallied.........0 tackles and only a handful of snaps.

https://www.dawgnation.com/football/team-news/notre-dame-transfer-jay-hayes-loved-everything-about-first-uga-experience

Obviously that's not to say he won't have a big year down there, or he wouldn't have helped here, but I think that's a remarkable turnaround for our defensive line to play at such a high level after a 5th year SR/returning starter left the program considering the state of our DL in previous years. Hats off to the staff for the DL play against Michigan and what appears to be a bright future up front.

Wait, why would they scan your tix for both? I get that Duncan is "the stadium," but still. Also, I'm sure with technology they should have a way to scan the same ticket for two different entries or something so it doesn't ring up as reentry. Dumb...

They scanned our tix a second time because we had left the Duncan center and went back outside, not knowing the Duncan center was considered being "in the stadium". The reason the supervisor let us go in was due to the fact the scanned our tix a third time and it verified our story and the time we said we had been in the center. The fact that my wife looked like she was about to wilt probably helped verify our story. lol

This probably means both sides will be chomping at the bit to schedule more games. As much fun as it is to beat Michigan, it's more trouble than it's worth sometimes. Saturday was fun, but I still would have rather had 37-0 be the final meeting till the end of time.

After watching the game both live and a couple replays, here’s how I feel based on our 1 game sample. In general, we saw everything we needed to see to feel really good.

On Wimbush: He stood in there like a warrior, and stepped up in the pocket several times like a he had been doing it his whole life. He was very calm, didn’t panic, even though he had every right to getting pressured like that. He kept his eyes downfield as far as I could tell. He didn’t have runs where I was thinking “why didn’t you pass!”. Every pocket escape seemed timely and the correct read. Will be interesting to see going forward if he’s able to scan the field and make more plays with his arms given that he’ll have more time. Will also be interesting to see how he responds to zone. Man to man plays to his strength, zone not so much. So looking forward to that, because it's a whole new animal.

On the OL: They were pretty good in run blocking actually. I watched one half where I focused on Hainsey on every play, same with Liam. Hainsey and Liam didn’t seem overmatched when running, but in pass pro they’d get beat around the corner quite a bit. That’s expected so no reason to panic. I think they did slightly better than expected, but not great. Again, it’s Michigan and it’s their first game, so no reason for concern. Overall, pleased.

On the RBs: Not sure why Tony Jones didn’t get more carries. He seemed like the better runner to me. I know Jafar had the two TDs, but Jones lowered the pads and got an extra yard or two on every carry by reading the hole and lowering his head. Overall, they are what I expected. Nothing to concern a defense, but solid.

WRs and TEs: Very good game, IMO. Mack needs to make that catch, and block better, but he’s competing. Speaking of blocking, they get after it. Finke is a very underrated blocker. There’s a couple times where he’s manhandling his guy downfield. Once we play a weaker opponent and/or Dexter comes back, we’ll notice those blocks more because they’ll come into picture when we get downfield.

Defense: Just a great effort and fast team. Elliot played his best game ever IMO, Gilman is better than I expected, and the corners played like we expected. The front 7 was active and in the backfield on the regular. Ade had a couple of plays where he pressured/tipped the pass, so it’s good to see they trust him in a big moment and he’s stepping up. The rest of the guys lived up to the billing. I want to see more Daelin Hayes going forward. Flutie was praising him, but I thought he got swallowed up in single blocks too often. He wasn’t bad, but I want to see him become a play maker. Overall, group is fundamentally sound, fast, and plays with passion and pass rush – what more can you want?

Randoms: STs was well below average, but I think that’s something you can fix by changing strategy a bit. This doesn’t have me concerned, but it will if we don’t see changes. Defensive depth is very concerning to me – we lost essentially a starting nickel who is a play maker, as well as our only “really good” backup DT. We cannot continue to drop key players, so we need some injury luck going forward. Would be amazing to have Jay Hayes on the team right now to back up inside :(.

Lastly, Michigan still sucks, so fvck them.

Sucks Dex had to miss this one, but it'll be nice to trot out fresh juice for the Stanford game. That, plus all the experience Armstrong and Davis got, should play dividends later in the season. Glad the other guys could step up in his absence!

Very good way of looking at the situation. I was pretty impressed with the "debut' of the backs... especially against the much hyped Michigan D. Miss Dex but I have a great deal more comfort for the next three games. Cheers and Go Irish!!

You could tell Armstrong is a freshman. While he ran hard, he couldn't bounce off or run through tacklers, like someone with a little more physical maturity. The good news is he will mature.

Why Jones didn't get more snaps? IMO, I think BK was playing Armstrong and Davis hoping to pop one with their speed. Jones was in late, because of what I just wrote and he has experience, so fumbles aren't a worry.

:)

Kewnjuh is like Colin Cowherd. He's never wrong, he just pivots into the correct position.

But I'll give him credit, his assessment is spot on and echoes my own thoughts at about a 90% accuracy.

To discuss what I was wrong about I'd have to be either a liar or a story teller.

The only thing I was wrong about was Wimbush. He wasn't perfect, and I'll be interested to see how he does against a zone where the options aren't pre-determined and he has to read the field... But he exceeded my expectations, and I was very pleased with him. I was lower on Wimbush than he performed, so I'll take a L there.

On the flip side, I was (and still am) high on Shea Patterson. He worried me in this game. It's not that he performed poorly, but that OL was so bad and our DL so good that he never had a chance to hurt us. Tom Brady could have stood back there and he wouldn't have made plays. No QBs can perform under that type of constant pressure. Not sure I'm "wrong" on Patterson, but he under performed what I expected.

Also, completely impressed with Clark Lea and Chip Long. I've been saying since April I'm really high on Chip Long, he has a confidence and assertiveness that is perfect for running a team. I think everyone has Lea on a pedestal and perhaps rightfully so, but Chip Long might be our best assistant coach. Good debate to have.

Finally looked around at what the national media had to say.... very hard to find anyone giving ND any credit whatsoever... it's all basically, "Michigan blew it, Harbaugh isn't worth the money..."

Trying to look at it with the ND glasses off, I kind of get it.

Harbaugh falling flat on his face IS the primary story, because he's getting paid a bunch of money to beat good teams... but yet again, his team failed on the road against a good opponent.

And that's kind of why ND isn't getting the props for the game. Everyone assumes ND is a quality opponent despite having their own questions, so it's no big deal that they were able to beat scUM, who struggles against teams like ND.

The big deal is the most overpaid and overrated coach in college football losing another big game, even though he's in year 4 and has his savior at QB in place.

It's looking more and more like he built his rep on having the privilege of coaching Andrew Luck, and having been a year ahead of the rest of the NFL when he had Kaepernick running the 49er offense.

Does this mean there's a chance that he has developed and improved during the off-season? Does this mean there's a chance he's more experienced and has matured?

That would contradict every preseason assessment you made about him.

It wouldn't at all.

And yes, there's a chance, and I've always acknowledged as much.

But anyone who had the expectation rather than hope that he progressed rapidly over the season, considering he got worse during the year last night, is either a fool or lying to themselves.

Not to mention the fact that he looked like superman in 2017 camp, and received far more critique in 2018 camp, but that's not even necessary to prove the point.

The good news for Harbaugh is that Patterson is a better QB than what they have had up to this point.

The bad news for Harbaugh is that the Patterson hype means that most of the blame for the "under performance" will be placed on Harbaugh and could hasten his exit.

Having been at the game, I never felt like this game was in doubt while I watched it live. After watching the replay a couple of times I could see where (with a couple of bounces to the ball) this could have gone the other way. I think Mich is going to gives some teams in the Big10 fits. That defense is fast as shat and I think Patterson will show a lot better down the stretch. To be clear...Shat-again is my least favorite team and I hope they never EVER win again but I think that was a very good team we just beat.

Exactly this.
Media has been downplaying his mediocre play because...
1) Hoke's players
2) No QB

No excuses now.
