The way I read those records is:

A). Coach Kelly has over the last six years given us the best three rated teams of the last twenty;
B). Just imagine what the records would have been if we'd had even one good QB for a three year stretch (Chryst/ Hendrix/ Golson/ Zaire/ Kizer --- all of whom people thought would be excellent, or at least far better than they were, and Kizer an AA if he'd stayed around.) In my opinion it would have been the seven best rated teams of the last twenty.

These sorts of things are why I hold the (surprisingly lonely -- to me) opinion that Coach has been consistently generally excellent, being held back by only three things:

1). the previously mentioned diabolical bad luck of great QB prospects turning out to be emotional busts (a problem which can now be solved by Book, and very probably spectacularly solved by Jurkovec);
2). being too damm good a man in showing loyalty to certain coaching teammates, not being able to see their faults quickly, and being really reluctant to replace them (another problem that now seems to be solved, but surely at some emotional cost);
3). also showing probably too much loyalty to certain veteran players (the absolute worst case being, again sadly, the Joe Schmitt situation --- a good player overmatched in high-level games, and supported by a DC whose schemes were too complicated and "intellectual" to be comprehended by anyone else) and hard-working practice players who might not have been as functional as some younger guys who might have been practicing pretty hard themselves but couldn't get into the game-plan focus (it "feels" as though this happens to some of our receivers, and maybe RBs.)

My who-cares opinion is: Coach Kelly is great --- probably should be runner-up Coach-of-the-Year to the UCF guy. Coach will have us back "in the conversation" again next year, unless the Devil strikes our QB situation again. And thank GOD for the win vs LSU --- maybe it will get some people off his back.
Points 2 and 3 aren't the hallmarks of a great coach.

Maybe not. They are however the hallmarks of a good man.

(keep digging away at him gang, if that still happens after this game and year, there's no hope that you'll ever stop.)

I know we had a thread at the beginning of the year where everyone discussed what they were hoping for by season's end. I don't know the percentages, but I think most people were expecting 8 wins with a few saying 9. Almost everyone said a 10-win season with a good bowl win would be an excellent year. Well, we won 10 games and played in a New Year's Day bowl against a 9-3 SEC team and won and will probably finish ranked in the top 10. Will the bitching ever stop?!?

Some pretty funny melt downs on https://www.tigerdroppings.com/rant/lsu-sports/ right now. I feel it's only fair since they were poking around over here and making fun of the few optimistic posts we had.

Yeah, they deserve their karma. We had mostly negative nancies like myself but they still cherry picked the few optimistic posts and were like "oh my god Notre Dame fans are THE WORST and soooooo delusional."

Well, who's laughing now?

Of course not. Fan bases like Notre Dame’s judge their teams on historical highs. I live around Tennessee fans and we were talking about their new coach and if they thought he would be successful. They said yes. I asked them to define success. They said “2 SEC championship in 5 years”. I laughed. UT has probably won 2 titles in 5 years twice since WW II but that’s the expectations. Never mind it’s harder to win the SEC than ever before.

Same problem here.

I wanted to wait a day to post my thoughts after a very proud win. Like Mike I'm a Kelly guy and like Mike I see him as a good man and the type of leader Notre Dame must have. Also want to put my 2$ in on Book. What I saw in the spring game was a tight catchable ball with often times the right velocity--he reminds me of Tom Clements. It will be interesting to see what Kelly does with the guy and what his team thinks of him as a leader. What he did yesterday puts me in the mind of Notre Dame should take a better look at this guy as a potential starter-question-is he a leader which the position must have. What a great way to end the season. Lastly the schedule needs tweeking-I don't see how every year you can finish on the road at southern cal/Stanford unless your trying to prove the point that its a ballbuster game since you have no conference championship game to play for. Alabama would never allow this with the best team in the country year in year out no matter what you think of their system and entrance/college life experience culture. Saban would have a cow.

What? We can't criticize a head coach? You act like they just won the National Title. They had a good year, and beat a solid LSU team. It was a nice improvement but 2016 was an absolute disaster, and a lot of that falls on Kelly. He is far from exempt from criticism.

Again, beginning of the year that's great, yeah, but seeing where this team was heading into the Miami game it's a disappointment. I could have lived with a loss to Miami, but they got absolutely mollywhopped by a not very good Miami, struggled against Navy, and then proceeded to unravel against Miami.

Not to ruffle feathers or argue but Miami was a very good team Navy is a beast-(you don't see sec teams scheduling them) and these guys were out of gas the last 3 weeks of the season. Criticize Kelly, that's everyone's option here, but I think you're mistaken saying the Marines and Miami are not quality.

I never said they weren't quality. I'd say Miami is good, not really good, but that is beside the point. The point is it is absolutely inexcusable to lose 41-8 to them.

Well, who's laughing now?

I figured it all hinged on how Wimbush came out and played early...welp, I was wrong.

every time I see Boykin hangin in the air like MJ...I'm laughing my ass off...so much so he is now my AVATAR, so I can see it every day and LMAO....

I'm not "digging away at him." I don't think BK is a bad coach, he is clearly a good coach. His long long career speaks to that, but he is not an elite coach. That's not a knock, those are in very short supply.

Preach! Going to Pappadeuax's for lunch! Thanks be unto you!

I pity y'all. While watching the Citrus Bowl I got to eat gumbo made by an LSU fan. Damn good stuff, though he had to mix it up so his young daughter would actually eat it

I'm shocked that Finebaum and Des would have picked LSU....

SIAP, did you guys see the Lego version of the catch?

If not if someone could embed it, it's sweet. I can't embed from phone.

CBS Expert Picks - Bowls

Dennis Dodd? and Fornelli picked ND ATS. (I think both picked us Straight Up, too.)

Interesting to see who in IE nailed our season record.

I think I called 11 wins based mostly on Elko.
