Classic ND administration. The only reason Notre Dame is a top flight University is because of football. Without ND football it simply would be a really good small Catholic University in Northern Indiana.

If ND self imposes, they are at least telling the fan base that they do not care about being good in football anymore. And worse yet, telling every major coach, that might takeover one day.

That's a pretty gross exaggeration. It's a top flight university because of the administration of Fr. Hesburgh. It's famous, in part, because of football. Football does not make top flight universities---it's largely kept around in the modern era because it brings in money and forges alumni connection.

He was the epitome of sideline reporters before the role was overtaken by the ladies. He typically worked w/ Keith Jackson & Brent Musberger. He ws infamous for interviewing John L. Smith as he ran off the sideline. MSU was going to go in w/ a big lead but they tried to kick a last second FG. Instead of calling TO to properly set up, they rushed the play and in doing so had only ten men on the field. This allowed AJ Hawk to rush in and block the attempt which was promptly returned for six. Look it up on YouTube...it's typical John L.

I'm know that all of this is speculation, so I will throw something else out there that may be better or worse depending on your viewpoint. Could the Administration possibly be considering movement in conference affiliation? After seeing what happened to the Big 12 being left out of the playoff, they could be considering a shift to full membership in the ACC. Not more of a stretch than some of the other things stated in here.

I think sometimes people forget about when championship games hurts teams. Example if FSU/Oregon/ Ohio state lost on Saturday they are out. All the favorites won this weekend. Next year might not be the same.

You are correct in that thinking, but no one is going to make decisions based on "what if" scenarios. Conferences want to be represented because of what they did on the field and not rely on someone losing to get in. I would be surprised if there isn't some type of movement, at least in the Big 12, to gain more members.

Like I said though, it was just a scenario I threw out there. If teams keep getting left out after not playing a conference championship game then I expect it to be considered greatly by Notre Dame to go to full membership in the ACC.

first the jack arute nugget and then (if you were listening...I was) Gary Danielson says an hour later on Maddog: he says " hey don't be surprised if TEXAS makes a move to the SEC, and they go for one more team, and then they reshuffle the SEC divisions moving bama to the east division and texas anchoring the west."
he also said the big 12 gonna add UCF and BYU and have a CC game.

perhaps a major conference shuffling coming yet again...not sure if ND starts the dominos???
I doubt it.
we would go kicking and screaming IMO and be last chess piece to make a move.
