While I agree, I want to reiterate that Trumbetti very well may be that guy. People keep forgetting about him, which is crazy, since I think he could have a fantastic season this year. He was a blue chip recruit that has shown early that he play on a high level. He could easily have a breakout season.

If he does... College football betta' watch out!

I agree. While I'm not loving our depth at DE, I think a lot of folks are underestimating Trumbetti. I think the college game has already "slowed down" for him and he's going to be a menace this year.

Screw that... Whiskey's got a $29.99 nightly special which includes free booze after he passes out.

I'm gonna crash on Whiskey's back patio. Soaking my feet in his Koi pond.

If by "Koi pond", you mean kiddie pool filled up with hose water, then right on, Dude.

But if any of you make it out my way, I will happily ply you with premium booze.

wooly: "hey ya. Eh... I heard ya have a koi pond to soak my feet in."

whiskey: "We have pond in the back, but we have a kiddie pool—and a pond.... kiddie pool be good for you. Natural spring."

My hopeful prediction: ND lines up with Okwara/Day/Jones/Rochell backed up by Smith/Grace/Schmidt and nobody can run on us, but are stupid and still try. When down and distance gets right, Trumbetti and "Mr.X" --- some young stud who emerges, or even Ishaq --- enter and BVG unleashes Jaylon and either Luke or Farley or Russell or Redield in Blitzomania and we sack everybody. ... Notre Dame 52; QB-bruised opponent 0.

As I've said ad nasuem... I think Trumbetti is going to be better than simply a 3rd down "Mr X". I honestly think he is our next great defensive lineman. He was a true freshman last year. This is his break out year.

Mark it.

Optimism can be a powerful thing, but it don't mean squat without "optimistic" three deep skill and power.

I'll take the cautious branch of the road over the doom-and-gloom or the high-in-the-sky-apple-pie forks.

So according to an actual coach, we have only one linebacker that is SEC quality and that is Jalen Smith?

I just don't know what to say other than I'm sure that's not the only positional group and that I guess that explains inexplicable losses to Pitt, Northwestern and Louisville recently.

You serious, Clark? I never believed you were an ND fan, but this is living proof. And I've quoted it for posterity for all IE members.

Freudian slip. I watched Jalen Rose play about 500 games as a Pacer fan. The point is that I would like to think our best linebacker by far would be better than the average SEC backer in the eyes of a coach.

This x1000. I'll take it a step further and say he has a near identical college career as Chris Long and turns into a similar pro prospect.

Actually it didn't say that at all. The opposite, in fact.

RTFA said:
"(Smith) is a legit sideline-to-sideline guy and twice the athlete Te'o was," said one coach who played the Irish last season and was wowed by Smith. "He looks like an SEC linebacker."

Actually, according to one expert, Smith looks a lot like the best linebacker the SEC has produced in the previous decade.

"I don't know if there's a better talent in the country," said NFL Network draft analyst Daniel Jeremiah, a former NFL scout. "The player he reminds me of is Patrick Willis just in terms of sheer explosiveness. I don't know what he'll run (in the 40), but it's really impressive when you watch him in a game against Florida State with Dalvin Cook and all the athletes they have and (Smith) looks like the fastest guy on the field."

I'm sure that was just a Freudian slip, too, though. Nor does it say anywhere that we have only one "SEC quality" LB, whatever the hell that's supposed to mean. But read into it what you like.

I think its supposed to mean speed. Size and physicality.

* Right, because the only conference with great players is the SEC (not the Pac 12, who had more 1st rounders this year than the SEC, as did the ACC).

* Right, because we don't have players that could start at Kentucky, Vanderbilt, Tennessee, Florida, MSU or whatever overrated team you want to throw out there. THOSE players are SEC quality, but not ND (of course, a troll like you will overlook losses by SEC schools to teams like Temple, or the fact that the East sucked last year, and beat up on each other, while they showed how overrated they were come bowl season...seriously, Florida SUCKED and they actually beat some of these shitty SEC schools).

* Right, because Notre Dame players couldn't possibly play for LSU, despite the fact that we beat them this past year. Nah, no way.

* Right because Louisville sucks, and it was an inexplicable loss (let's ignore catastrophic injuries). The SEC would never lose to a shitty team like that. Wait, an SEC team lost to Louisville last year? Ooooops, there goes that theory.

* Right, and let's ignore all the SEC offer Nyles Morgan, Jarrett Grace (Alabama, hello), Asmir Bilal, Greer Martini (Bama again), Tevon Coney, and Josh Barajas. Nah, they couldn't play in the SEC, despite SEC schools wanting them to join their team. Nah.

Like I said from the jump when you joined, you're not even a good troll. Do better.

THIS IS AN EXELLENT POST.

I would have said some of it if NDinLA hadn't lit the thread up!

But the Storm Stain is important to refute, because if it stands at all it obscures the fact that no position group on the Irish squad has improved more rapidly that the linebacking corps; and that is including and after losing the single most decorated linebacker in the history of college football!

Instead I will get behind the man; and mention what one or more credible expert has said about the linebackers on Notre Dame's current roster. The following ND linebackers have been compared to, or above SEC quality :

  • Jaylon Smith - Equal to or better than the best SEC linebacker ever.
  • Tevon Coney - a prototype SEC inside linebacker (prior to taking a college snap.)
  • Nyles Morgan - His speed has been compared to the best of the SEC linebackers.
  • Asmir Bilal and Josh Barajas - were both considered to have the size and speed of an SEC [starting] linebacker, in fact when asked to comment about why they weren't rated higher, the response was typically that they were not from the south (typical SEC territory), and that was all they were missing.
  • Greer Martini and Jarrett Grace - Martini was lost in the shuffle a bit, but if you watched his play at all last year you saw a young kid that flew to the ball with freakish speed. If he hadn't shut down his recruitment so early, he would have had many more SEC schools courting him, as it was, Alabama's interest proves the point. And Jarrett Grace had a list of schools after him that was pretty amazing. He stepped into some pretty big shoes, in a very difficult situation. (Coach and scheme) and did quite well. If he comes back and plays meaningful minutes after his catastrophic injury, he may succeed at something few if any other players have.
And I will add one more. Vandy would have taken Joe Schmidt in a heartbeat.

I wish there was a way for us to collectively put Irish Storm and NDgradstudent on a boat and vote them off the island.

I would settle for a Lord of The Flies, in a pinch. Declare them both Piggie and throw rocks at them.
