I don't remember any info that hinted at him being headless, but it's been a while since I've read the books.

Me neither, thought they faked the head.

His head was cut off given as a trophy to the Martell's, but they don't really believe it's him. Honestly the most I remember about that whole story line is that I was never really that into it and it took a LOOOONNGG time to play out. Wasn't he 'dying' for like three full books or some such, it felt like it anyway.

The Mountain's skull would not be easy to spoof. At ~420 lbs and 8+ feet tall, he's probably the most physically imposing man in the entire Seven Kingdoms. Also, one doesn't get the impression lacking a head would hinder Qyburn's dark work in the least.

And then there's the following snippet from one of Bran's greendreams in GoT:

"There were shadows all around them. One Shadow was dark as ash, with the terrible face of a hound. Another was armored like the sun, golden and beautiful. Over them loomed a Giant in armor made of stone, but when he opened his visor, there was nothing inside but darkness and thick black blood."

Given the evidence, I think Qyburn actually did send Gregor's skull to the Martells, and that he had no problem animating his monstrous body anyway.

There's lots of reasons to believe the books are done.

1) He love twists. It would be the ultimate twist if he bullshitted the show writers so that he can do what he really wants in the books.

2) Is it actually possible for him to have put it off for so long? I can't even name one of his many side projects. How much time can he have actually spent on them?

3) $$$. Interest in GoT will never be higher than right after the show is over. People love the show and will want to buy the books to keep the experience going. Up until now, they could just Google anything they were confused about.

A lot of my complaints have already been registered, but I'll toss my 2c in:

[*]So who kills Dany now? In the books, it's likely Jon. He's Azor Azhai, Dany is his Nyssa Nyssa, and he'll have to run her through with Longclaw in order to forge Lightbringer and defeat the Night King. But all that context is gone now.

AA fails twice before succeeding.

Jon "won" against NK (ice/water) - but Cersei still caused a threat
Jon "won" against Cersei (Lion) - but Dany poses a threat
Jon has final victory against Dany (Love) and is the "Lightbringer" (not a sword) but a metaphor for true leader of free world.

(my armchair theory).

((This would also explain how Jon "hasn't accomplished anything" this season...and why D&D said it would "cliche" for Jon to kill NK....Jon has a bigger fish to fry))

I wouldn't be surprised if Arya kills Dany at this point. They have basically never had a conversation. Dany killed a random mother and daughter that Arya bonded with in the streets of KL. Dany must pay and there's only one person in Westeros that is capable of killing her. Don't forget the feminists we have to appease because Dany went crazy and Jon didn't think raping and pillaging was cool.

Maybe the final episode has an epilogue and then a post-credits that is just a publication date for TWoW

Someone in here called it years ago, forget who but remember the dialogue. Something like, " GRRM is trolling the show runners and is giving them a BS ending."

4) GRRM recently had a new headshot taken that looks suspiciously like a shot an author would have taken to be used in a dust jacket.

5) There are sources that have said TWOW was done in 2015, like done done but George felt that it was substandard work and set out to rework huge sections of it. That's 4 years ago though. That would mean we're approaching a point where he would have been working on the new version for as long as it took him to write the version he was unhappy with.

I literally heard a faculty member going off on GoT this morning with the EXACT same argument,... she teaches women’s studies. I couldn’t make this “Saturday Night Live skit in real life” up.

Rewatching the last episode again tonight because my wife couldn't watch it Sunday. I actually hate it more than the first time.

Fuck you D&D.

A lot of my complaints have already been registered, but I'll toss my 2c in:
  • They just completely butchered Jamie's arc. There was no redemption for him, and minimal character development. How does this happen? He's easily one of the top 5 most important characters, and yet they wrote him like they'd never even read the books.
  • How did no one end up killing Cersei!? There's a whole prophecy about who kills her and how. Is it Jamie? Tyrion? Arya? Nope. They chose to ignore the GRRM's obvious setup in favor of a totally anticlimactic ending that ruined Jamie as well.
  • So Drogon destroys Euron's ship while he's standing on it, he gets blown into the water, swims at least a mile to King's Landing, and washes ashore at the exact moment that Jamie is walking by? And then has the strength to nearly defeat him in a duel, stabbing him twice in the gut with a short-sword. Jamie seems to be near death (as he should be), rallies to beat Euron, and then just walks it off to go find Cersei. Euron dies smiling because he's "the man who killed Jamie Lannister". And "fucked the queen" (though that's not a very exclusive club in KL). Just a bizarre mix of incoherent motivations.
  • This was mentioned on /r/asoiaf; they only put Arya in KL to show the carnage, but Davos would have been a way better choice there. Having grown up in Flea Bottom and traumatized by the burning of Shireen, he would have been a much better vehicle for conveying what Benioff and Weiss wanted.
  • How much screen time has been dedicated to "the horrors of war"? Benioff & Weiss are obviously very comfortable writing those sorts of scenes, since the bulk of several episodes have been dedicated to it. Just frustrating to keep running over the same ground with all the character development that's been cut in favor of it.
  • Dany's heel turn was rushed. And her deciding to utterly destroy the city she's dreamed of retaking her whole life--after she'd just won--was tough to buy. Same with her soldiers murdering and raping while Dany is indiscriminately strafing the city with dragonfire. You'd expect their instinct for self-preservation to kick in at some point.
  • So who kills Dany now? In the books, it's likely Jon. He's Azor Azhai, Dany is his Nyssa Nyssa, and he'll have to run her through with Longclaw in order to forge Lightbringer and defeat the Night King. But all that context is gone now. Perhaps Bran wargs into Drogon and kills her. Maybe she kills herself out of guilt. Or Arya could steal Tony Hawk's face, do a sweet 360 varial kickflip to land behind Dany just before her coronation, and kill her with some kewl tagline. Who cares? It's all so incredibly stupid now.

Ironically, I think this garbage ending may create even more hype for TWoW, since everyone will want to see how these stories really end. Would be hilarious if GRRM gave Benioff & Weiss a fake ending, and that's what we're seeing now. But it seems more likely that they're just making this up themselves.

Ugh, I gotta say, I agree with this pretty much wholesale, maybe a couple quibbles not even worth mentioning.

Last week I was semi-defensive of the show in a "well at least they are trying" spirit, but really, couldn't they have done better than this? The absence of dramatic logic and the lack of character development were appalling. I'll echo Whiskey: I wish they would have cut out some of the repetitive, cumulative "horror of war" stuff and add some other character development stuff to make what the characters do more believable.

GRRM is not having it.

Of late it seems there’s a new story about me somewhere on the net every day, or near enough to make no matter. Many get things wrong. For the most part I ignore them. I have better things to do than try and track down every weird rumor or out-and-out fabrication that pops up on some obscure website trolling for traffic.

Every so often, however, one of these stories gains an improbable currency, and just chuckling at the insanity no longer suffices.

That seems to be happening right now. All of a sudden this crazy story about my finishing THE WINDS OF WINTER and A DREAM OF SPRING years ago is popping up everywhere. No, I am not going to provide links. I don’t want to reward purveyors of misinformation with hits.

I will, however, say for the record — no, THE WINDS OF WINTER and A DREAM OF SPRING are not finished. DREAM is not even begun; I am not going to start writing volume seven until I finish volume six

It seems absurd to me that I need to state this. The world is round, the Earth revolves around the sun, water is wet… do I need to say that too? It boggles me that anyone would believe this story, even for an instant. It makes not a whit of sense. Why would I sit for years on completed novels? Why would my publishers — not just here in the US, but all around the world — ever consent to this? They make millions and millions of dollars every time a new Ice & Fire book comes out, as do I. Delaying makes no sense. Why would HBO want the books delayed? The books help create interest in the show, just as the show creates interest in the books.

So… no, the books are not done. HBO did not ask me to delay them. Nor did David & Dan. There is no “deal” to hold back on the books. I assure you, HBO and David & Dan would both have been thrilled and delighted if THE WINDS OF WINTER had been delivered and published four or five years ago… and NO ONE would have been more delighted than me.

How I envision the opening scene for Episode 6

-Dany sitting on Drogon at the dragon pit. Lords from across the 7 kingdoms are there, lined up to hear the new Queen's speech. This includes Jon, all the Starks, Gendry, Brieanne, Tyrion, Davos, etc.
-Dany - I'm the mother of dragons...yada yada...breaker of chains...birthright, destiny...Stormborn...something or other.
-Dracarys...everyone dies a horrible death

-Jon wakes up heavily breathing
-Bran is creepily sitting next to his bed and they lock eyes for a moment
-Bran slow wheels away without saying a word
-Cut to non-dream world, crazy-eyed Dany

Man people are so miserable. Sometimes I forget that we live in a world where a huge population of people just prefer to be angry than happy. It’s too bad that people are so worried about things not going the way they wanted and not actually just enjoying the magnitude of the show. First off, this is the most expensive television show ever made in the history of the world. I am in awe of some of the stuff they are able to accomplish from a CGI, props and set perspective as this is a massive scale production. I do think the show could’ve used an extra 3-4 hours (maybe 10 episodes instead of 6) to further elaborate the character’s arcs and things of that nature like Jamie leaving Brienne quickly and finding Cersei and dying so quickly but overall I think a lot of it has been well done. In episode 5 I really enjoyed the Clegane Bowl and thought it was an absolute fitting end to fall into the fire. Following Arya through the streets gave the audience perspective of the horror and devastation because had we not seen closely what Dany was doing we wouldn’t have hated what she did so much most likely. There’s plenty of instances where the offscreen deaths are forgotten and the audience forgives or just doesn’t mind as much but by seeing the children and women mostly being burned alive then you have that moral conundrum of seeing the good guys doing terrible things which is kind of what this whole show has had in it. Many moral dilemmas with very few purely good characters. I also think the show left itself many options with how they could finish and which directions they could go which is awesome to me because I’ll be surprised not matter what. I kind of suspected Dany turning evil in Episode 5 but I was very much in denial right up until she flew off that building to burn people. People are going to hate how it ends, want to sue D&D, say it’s a waste of time, the worst season ever, the worst ending, but I’m excited for the surprises to come next week and I think it’ll be exciting to find out who will sit on the iron throne in the end or if there will be one at the end.
