For all the talk about on-air "personalities," most of the people I saw on a list of laid-off ESPN journalists were everyday beat reporters covering pro teams and college conferences primarily for the website. People like Matt Fortuna (although not him, he appears to have left ESPN previous to today). One of their best college football reporters - Brett McMurphy - was let go.
That's too bad. A lot of those people do really good work.

No idea how you guys missed Chris Hassel.

That was a talent that I'm sure ESPN didn't let fully develop. Google Cooter Ray.

ESPN

The names that really stuck out to me beside Ed Werder were Scott Burnside and Pierre Le Brun. Those were the only two guys they had that know hockey other than Barry Melrose.

Chalk it up to further proof ESPN hates covering the NHL. Guess they don't have time for hockey though when 10 minute "inspirational" pieces about girls on steroids with armpit hair winning high school female wrestling titles are a cover story.

Oh and this guy:

Waiting for Tim Kirkjian to be let go. Probably my favorite analyst info guy ever.

saw a stat this morning on espn that 65% of players on rosters last year were drafted in the 4th round or later.

So i thought id do some quick math 7 rounds of 32 plus 32 comp. picks = 256. 160 players in 4th or later = 62.5%.

Gee thanks for letting us know how math works ESPN.

Also, does anyone feel like they havent been advertising the draft very much? Will be interesting to see if they change their coverage format from last year. Too many paid talking heads needing their time lead to extreme delays on announcing picks. In the world of twitter everyone knows way before ESPN puts on tv. Add in the fact that NFL network coverage was better and why would anyone watch the ESPN coverage?

SIAP but Andy Katz was fired, too. Shocking.

That is unreal. Wow. Katz, Werder, and Jay Crawford are ESPN institutions. I'm honestly shocked at some of these decisions... it's like they're firing all of the people that had me still occasionally following their content. They're firing all of the true journalists/reporters.

ESPN really doing their part to dismantle the white male patriarchy.

Not to bring race into this -- but did they fire any African-Americans other than Doug Glanville?

Those who have been around the longest tend to make the most money. Purge and slowly bring on youngsters willing got work for far less.

Except for football or basketball, I bet I haven't tuned into ESPN more than five times in the last couple of years.

I just don't understand their strategy. I don't know a single person that likes Jamelle Hill. Sorry Wiz, but I think ESPN will remain a low-growth laggard for Disney for the foreseeable future.

I don't work on that side of the business so I don't have a ton of detail, but Michael and Jamele were doing extremely well with His and Hers, which is what prompted the the move to SC6. It wasn't just an experiment, the ratings supported it. Whether that's translated since the move is a separate question.

Early ratings are decent for 'SC6' with Jemele Hill and Michael Smith

From two months ago... 2 weeks after it premiered. Seems to be doing ok. Not bad, not great.

If I'm home in time I will watch Around the Horn and PTI. I tried leaving it on to watch SC6 and couldn't take more than a few minutes of the show. I thought it was terrible. I thought they were both fine when on Around the Horn, but SC6 is not my cup of tea.

I've actually never seen it. My daughter goes to bed around 7:30 so we don't have the TV on from the time I get home from work until she's down for the night. What is the format? 6:00 is a strange time for a SportsCenter. It's too late for anyone to care about the previous night's scores anymore but it's too early for anything to have happened that day. What do they talk about?

It is weird, because I think they talk about that night in sports. Whether they talk about the night before, or what's going to happen, it does seem a bit... off.

There's quite a bit of non sports at least on the limited viewing I've had. Like Monk, I usually switch to PTI and Around the horn.

Thanks Gower, interested to see what ratings have done since the "honeymoon" period.

I can only speak to what little I saw of the show, but they try to take a typical sports topic and banter about it. This is no different than any other program, but it's the way the two of them go about it. Most of the time it seems like they are giggling about some random thing one of them said. It could just be me but it feels like an inside joke that the rest of the audience is left out of. Most of the time I think they are just flirting with each other and forget about the sports topic.
