Part of the problem, no? They haven't done much of anything to try to capture the hockey fans despite having very good hockey reporters/insiders.

For the record I freaking loved National Hockey Night, that music still brings such a positive response to me when I hear it... it was prob my single fav weekly sports broadcast of any sport on any channel... two things happened around the same time, ESPN booted hockey all together and shifted towards these The Herd and PTI style sensationalist shows... put the two together and I clapped my hands... as I said, I only watch live broadcasts of select sports now.

ESPN is laying people off because they need to correct their course...

And yet the people they're laying off are the complete opposite of who they should be getting rid of

It's absurd when you think about it. I'm sure a lot of people working places outside of ESPN can relate though.

That headline is misleading / inaccurate. We're expecting around 100 layoffs, some subset of which will be "talent." "Talent" includes on-air personalities, writers, etc. And the "talent" part doesn't make up the full 100.

What I have heard is that the term includes TV/Radio/Electronic Media (bloggers, etc)
Right, the term includes all of those things, but the layoffs include more than that, i.e. "regular people."

I'm listening to the Bram Weinstein show right now and it's fascinating because he got out of ESPN specifically because he saw this coming and is walking everyone through what is ESPN's fault and what is out of their control.

you know Stephen A will survive the cut...cant stand him.
he's an instant "channel change" whether it be radio or tv.

I'll bet you can predict moving forward...
Group A- edgy, controversial, constantly looking for the social or political angle??
Group B- apolitical, simply do their job with integrity, not a side show.

My assumption is the layoffs will include almost exclusively Group Bs...

I actually like Stephen A. I've heard him give some serious long-form interviews and there's a lot of depth there. He's not just a #HotTakes guy, despite his on-air shtick.

What do you expect? This isn't hard hitting news. They aren't reporting on the political effects of Syria or anything. It's freaking sports, man. People don't want to watch Dan Rather report their sports to them, they want sensationalism, people have voted with their ratings.

I'm actually not shocked by this. Many of these guys pick up a shtick and stick with it because it's what the company wants/what sells. It's unfortunate that he has become this, because I do believe him to be an intelligent and personable journalist who could probably be more liked by the fanbase, though that doesn't move the needle.

At risk of my own great shame, this is how I feel about Mark May.

When he's not trying to troll ND, OSU, or any of the other teams that he begrudges from his own playing days, he's actually a really good football analyst, and has good things of substance to say.

The problem is that he got wasted alongside Lou Holtz doing their dumb dance for 4 years, and still presses on trolling some schools too much.

You can do the job with flair without fishing for faux controversy and or trolling every on air session... think old school NFL prime time, 90's sports center etc... I mean it's such a cesspool now.... Also, isn't poor ratings one of the things that got them to this point?? Honest question I really haven't cared enough about espn over the last few years to even follow anything other than what I hear on the peripheral.

ESPN has gone hard-left to appeal to a more "diverse" audience. I'm not sure why they thought this was a good idea, given that the political views of sports fans tend to be to the right of those of the country as a whole.

Maybe it is because Bob Iger wants to run for President, as Clay Travis suggested? Hmm...

It has nothing to do with Bob Iger and everything to do with John Skipper.
