Does anybody know if there are any differences with the policies about reporting COVID deaths in America vs other countries? Does every country reporting count the same things as COVID deaths as America does?

A President can put all kinds of regulations in place. You can send masks to everyone, even though they're readily available at many stores already. You can say only essential businesses can be open. None of this matters if people don't practice common sense and act responsibly.

I'm curious why you think it's overwhelmingly his supporters that are having anti-mask rallies, etc. Do you attribute it to Trump at all? Or is it just coincidence//a byproduct of some other factor?

Of course population centers are the hardest hit as with every pandemic in the history of mankind. That'd be the case regardless of whether everyone followed the rules or not.

Semi-Related: but people do realize that even the bluest cities have a substantial amount of Trump supporters, right? DC is about the bluest place in the union, and the DC metro area is about ~25% Republican. DC proper is even about ~10%. So that means even DC has tens of thousands of Trump supporters, and about 40% of them are anti-mask mandate. So you could have every single Biden supporter following every rule to the letter... and in an apartment building of 400 people you'll on average have 100 Trump supporters with 40 of them being anti-mask.

Trump says things like "we're doing great if you just take out Democrat cities" without acknowledging that we're all Americans and that there are a substantial number of Republicans in every single metropolitan area.

We arguably report better than most I would wager. We attribute any possible Covid deaths to Covid, or at least we did at one point. We've also attributed Covid to deaths when there were other contributing factors. Contrast that to a country like China, who has more citizens than any other country in the world...and they've only reported 4,000 total Covid deaths (Equal to the state of Ohio) and it's impossible to make a fair comparison. Hell, China has been reporting like 0 deaths since March which is ridiculous. Every country seems to have different standards as far as reporting deaths, and each country tests at different levels as far as how often and how easy or difficult it is to get access to testing.

In my neighborhood, there are plenty of Biden supporters not wearing masks. The Saints fans across the street are huge dems, and they've been partying like it's 1999 for months. Damn I miss their parties. And down at the QT that I visit weekly, it's very clear not-mask wearing is not a political thing. I'm watching the Louisville protests. Most are wearing mask, but many are not. You know who they are voting for. Yes, the Trumpsters are more vocal on the social media stuff on the topic, but in reality, it's not clear. Come on over to Atlanta, and I'll take you for a whirl around Downtown, Clarkston and MLK Drive. Not a lot of masks, and not a lot of Trump voters.

Just saw that Indiana moved to Phase 5 which means 100% capacity. Cases have been flat since mid July, with deaths flat around 10/day since the end of June.

Read a little more on this. Everything is open 100% now, but along with masks still be required, social distancing is to be maintained. Not sure how you open a restaurant or bar 100% and practice social distancing. I'm curious to see how the public handles this. Hope not, but I have a feeling we will see another spike.

They are not wearing mask for Covid. They are wearing mask to hide their faces.

Well if you think wearing a mask to walk in the door then to your seat is helping while you sit at your table with no mask on you are foolish. So you sit down for dinner at your local outback or family owned restaurant and you are there for 70 mins and by wearing a mask for 2 mins is going to help? Come on you all are smarter than that.

I'm not sure it helps, but I think the premise on wearing the mask to and from your table is due to you coming into closer proximity with people (waiters, busboys, customers waiting, etc.) while walking through the restaurant than when you're sitting down with your back to someone.

In my office I'm likely the most progressive person in the building (i'd say outside of 4 women, the entire office is a quiet trump supporter or at least anti-Democrat voter). I am the only one who wore a mask regularly and followed the "rules" implemented regularly. I had to ask people to leave my office if they came in with out a mask., quit carpooling to lunches with my department daily, etc... It made for many awkward situations and Im the office asshole now.

I don't think masks are effective unless universal and medical grade. The cloth ones do next to nothing. That said, I wish it wasn't a polarizing issue. There is no negative result to mask wearing regardless of what some youtube conspiracy theorist says. At worst, mask wearing has a net neutral outcome. So out of respect for businesses, especially restaurants, gyms, etc that have struggled mightily to stay afloat, just follow the damn mask rules, and if you are interacting with someone with a mask, wear yours as well.

Respectfully, you cant blow air through most commonly available cloth masks. And they prevent spittle and droplets as well. Much better than nothing by far. Also the gaiters that I see all the time have been found to be worse becasue their mesh is loose enough to allow things to pass through and it breaks droplets up into smaller airborne droplets that can stay airborne longer.

I agree that masks are only effective if you use them correctly and if you dont then there is no point in wearing them.

Fair points, but I think you kinda hit on the problem in your second paragraph. They are only effective if you use them correctly. The whole point of masking is to protect others from yourself, not to protect yourself from getting the virus from others, no? So when you have a large segment of the population either not wearing a mask or wearing it improperly, how much is the single-use surgical mask that I have now reused 15 times in the last 5 days going to protect me?

On the way home from Dale Hollow, we took a more scenic route. Stopped at an Amish grocery store. Noticed that while they had a sheet of hard plastic hanging between the clerk and customers at the register, none of the amish wore masks. This old lady in front of us starts laying into the clerk about not wearing a mask and proceeds to blister her for a good minute. While I don't play the morality police when I'm out, I did find it rather amusing.

The wife and I spent four days at Dale Hollow Lake which straddles KY & TN. We went to a grocery store in Celina, TN., walked in with our masks on and everyone looked at us like we were aliens. Pretty much anywhere we stopped, no one was wearing a mask except for a few employees and some of them left their noses exposed.

Hope you had a good trip. We're not afraid of a little virus in Tennessee.

I’m more than happy to give my tax money to the military over just about anything else. That’s the least I could do for to honor their service. I Hope that he understands that these same people he marginalized with comments like this are willing to sacrifice and do things they may not necessarily agree with, but still do out of a sense of duty so (thank goodness) people like him don’t have to make that sacrifice. I can see it now, next they’ll be a push to defund the military. If somebody this ignorant only had a clue what our service members and their families do every day without complaint, I would highly doubt they would use the same tactic. How dare he make a poorly veiled attempt to cheapen their service in order to put his misguided opinion on a pedestal.

Also, a billion dollars to the federal government is almost like $100 to you or I if we’re talking about economics of scale. The bottom line is, please don’t disrespect the service of those who serve as if they are somehow undeserving. I guarantee there’s plenty of other ways to come up with that money if needed.

Holy sh*t dude this logic is absurd.

Do you have literally ANY idea how much this country spends on the military? Should we just pull EVERY $ of taxpayper money and give it to the DOD? After all, suggesting we allocate funds to other areas of public need (including the fight against an ongoing pandemic) undercuts the service of the troops.

Yes I sure do, about $900B this year. I think that moreso proves my point actually, because it is not a meaningful increase to spending for the military, but the author of the tweet chose to make a point of it in an attempt to portray it as something of a inferior cause.

I didn’t say, nor do I advocate, spending every dime of taxpayer money on the military.

I also didn’t say that an adequate pandemic response did not justify any funding. I was merely pointing out the author’s clear bias towards something that in actuality serves a useful purpose and which he apparently fails to comprehend as such. For the CEO of a company that literally profits off of people going into debt, he sure has a lot of opinions about spending money that he thinks are wise.

I actually think that's precisely his point...

Bucket A has $900b in it.

Bucket B has ___?__ in it. (A LOT LESS THAN $900b)

You have $1b to allocate. Would it be better served in Bucket A or Bucket B?

Your beef seems to be his bias or attitude, rather than the logic. And I think you're reading a lot into that. I didn't see the part of the tweet where he, in any way, slighted the military or deemed it unworthy of funding. He advocated for funding of other causes, too.

That may be his point, and I may have misunderstood. Thank you for bringing that up.

I had to look this guy up to know who he was. It would be nice if he shared where he got the info from when he posts something like this. Was this money rerouted for COVID testing and related issues?
