That's because football likely doesn't leave a paper trail directly from businesses, meaning there are no taxation/fraud issues.

In football, you get handed cash or other goods from individuals as a "gift." It's against NCAA rules, but it's not against the law.

This will change if Nike/Adidas/UnderArmour start trying to out-bid one another to set up future business deals with 5-star recruits... but football recruiting is too big and too risky for those things to pay off.

The few times people actually DO leave paper trails from legit businesses in regards to football prospects, the NCAA starts sniffing around....and then just leaves it there doing almost nothing with it.

Rumors are Pitino and Jurich get the ax today

Rumors of "impending news" were already out last night.

I'd imagine Louisville leaked that Pitino was on his way out, but is waiting for today to announce it.

Probably a "you have 12 hours to resign, or else we're firing you with cause. [Michael Scott voice and look of confusion] You have one day."

funny that they chose basketball to go after and not football.

Well, not really. I mean, I am sure that it happens, but the influence and cash is far smaller as the companies stand to gain much less from individual NFL players.

Think about it for a moment. In the NBA, there is something like 450 players in the league, and everyone knows the stars, and the stars have a LONG shelf life. The NFL has 4X as many players as the NBA and the players have a much shorter career on average. Simple supply and demand makes the cash influence much smaller in the NFL on average.
Then, think about usage. Basketball shoes can be worn anywhere. Football cleats...not so much. This creates a massive barrier and drives down the incentive of apparel companies.

This is why the OBJ deal this past year, which was the richest in NFL history, would not even place OBJ in the top 10 of the NBA players apparel earnings last year.

I think it’s bad but not as widespread as some think. I saw a good tweet yesterday, if you’re a big CBB fan and when you saw the news, that feeling in your gut should tell you everything you need to know about the program you support. The UKs are in panic mode right now. They know the hammer will drop eventually. But plenty of coaches and fans slept happy last night.

And some had a restless night or not home in bed lol.

All of this and two other important factors. It's pretty easy to guesstimate with a high degree of certainty which kids will be one and done's. Give the kid some cash and you get it back 7 months later. In football it's a crap shoot and it's a 3 year wait on your return.

Also: In football, Canada is the only Plan B. In basketball there are leagues in Europe, Asia, South America & Australia where American players go and become millionaires without ever making an NBA roster. The downside risk on losing your investment as a money man is very low... and all of those overseas players need agents too.

I don't think they made a deliberate choice to go after anybody. I may be wrong, but I think all this sort of fell into their lap.

One guy gets busted for something else, then in order to get a deal he tells them anything and everything he can, which in this case happened to be about basketball.

trying to keep up here, from what i've seen, the Miami recruit was more than likely Lonnie Walker from Reading PA and Arizona recruit was Javon Quinerly from Hudson Catholic.

Honestly, the one and done rule certainly played a role in this, at least the impact to CBB. Before that time, you had dudes like Sonny Vaccaro wooing the likes of Kobe and McGrady through AAU and high school apparel deals.

That all changed with the one and done, adding in another level of the dirtiness to permeate.

So this is what could get really crazy tomorrow. A lot of rumors swirling about players like DeAndre Ayton, who signed with Arizona.

Ayton "goes to school" at Hillcrest Hoops Prep. I looked it up last year so I could go catch a game of his and I find out Hillcrest is a room inside a shady charter school 5 miles down the street from me. The guys who run HHP use online HS courses and a couple of charters for their "education" which is no doubt used to get them into any school that would take their flim flam transcript. None the less, the handlers will get paid and I read that Ron Artest's son, DeRon is playing for them this season.

Speaking of flim flam transcripts and AZ HS basketball players... Duke accepted 5* Marvin Bagley into this year's class. What is disturbing is he "reclassified", basically graduated early as a Jr. to go to college. Hats off to Duke for completely selling out. I'm sure his transcript is Duke worthy, especially after 3 years of public schools and probably 3 transfers between two states. That's disgusting.

Read that the ASM raid is expected to be unpleasant for South Carolina, UCLA and Kansas. We will see.

Yes, ASM Sports was raided yesterday and Andy Miller computer was taken via warrant. It is said to have A LOT of dirt on it. People believe this is just the beginning.

He should wipe it...like with a cloth or something....

I am truly sorry and will see myself out...

They. All. Cheat. They always have. Whether it's a conspiracy of the school, the staff, the AAU coaches, the agents, the shoe companies, the family, the financial advisers, the alumni & the fans or just one of them acting like a lone wolf, they all cheat. Too many hands out, to easy to get a quick return.

I've even heard of the recruiting analysts paying for exclusives on the hoops side.

So are these kids gonna be eligible to play?

I think it's kind of unknown at this point. The NCAA can't move as fast as the FBI for various reasons, and they are just learning of this for the first time, with everyone else. So, if the NCAA can't expedite the process somehow, then the players could conceivably be eligible. With that said, the schools would be taking some risks that those games would be forfeited by as the players would be deemed ineligible down the road. For example, this apparently affects two Arizona players that are going to be freshman, not including the 18' prospect they were after.
