Wrong.

The defense receives all the accolades (and rightfully so), but the offense was far from chopped liver.

As stated, you had the greatest RB of all time creating havoc and leading the top rushing team in the league that year. It was also one of those rare years that Jim McMahon was relatively healthy, and the guy was a good QB when he was. Having the OG Will Fuller in Willie Gault helped matters too. Their offensive line was also quite stout that year.

Problem is that their schedule brings them down. The '72 Dolphins played zero playoff teams in the regular season, and only had two games against teams that finished with winning records. Those being the 8-6 Chiefs and the 8-6 Giants.

The '85 Bears played 5 playoff teams (and the Redskins who lost a 3-way tie in the East), including both teams that ended up playing in the AFC Championship. They also played the defending Super Bowl champs in Candlestick. Also shutting out and embarrassing Tom Landry's playoff Cowboys 44-0.

But it also wasn't just about the strength of the schedule, the Bears didn't just beat opponents, they demolished them in embarrassing fashion. Look no further than the playoff game comparisons:

The Dolphins in '72 beat the Browns (20-14), Steelers (21-17) and Redskins (14-7) by an average margin of around 5.5 points.

The Bears in '85 beat the Giants (21-0), Rams (24-0) and Patriots (46-10) by an average margin of 27 points.

Respect the accolades of an undefeated season, but the Bears were better than that Dolphins squad.

Thanks for everyone's replies, I honestly have no clue about 'all time greatest teams'. I've heard about the the 85 Bears and the purple people eaters and the steel curtain, etc. Just had no clue if there was one team most considered to be the greatest ever.

It's like debating the greatest college squad ever: you hear of the early 2000s Miami teams, the late 90s Nebraska team, potentially a few older ND teams, etc.

Although the Bears will be saving some serious cap money by not paying Sitton $8 million, the downside for them is that they'll be losing a four-time Pro Bowler who's been one of the best guards in the NFL over the past few seasons.

As a matter of fact, according to numbers from Pro Football Focus, Sitton graded out as the fifth-best offensive guard in the NFL in 2017. Cutting a quality player to save money can make some sense, but in the Bears' case, they don't have a lot of depth at the position, which is why their decision to get rid of Sitton is somewhat surprising.

This was the Browns for so many years... never good enough to be considered average but rarely terrible enough to get one of the top guys... I think it's part of the reason they blew everything to hell and gone a couple years ago.

Hows everyone feeling about Roquan? At that Georgia game him and Lorenzo Carter were noticeable as the best players on D from my seat. He put on 20 lbs I think I read from end of the season until draft day and didn't lose any of that 4.5 speed. His closing speed is nuts. Has great coverage skills too. Just hoping he doesn't get sucked up by lineman.

Surprised nobody has mentioned the Mack trade in this thread yet. I was away from my computer for the weekend so I couldn't.

Man, I haven't been this excited for the Bears to start the year in well over a decade. At least since 2006.

A lot is riding on Trubisky taking that next step, which he really should with better coaching and playcalling on offense, along with better all-around playmakers at receiver.

But that defense....Jesus, that defense. THIS is a Chicago Bears defense. Mack and Floyd on the edges wreaking havoc, Trevathan and Smith inside, flying all over the place. Goldman and Hicks running over blokes on the line. Got a pretty darn good secondary too.

Come a long way from that utter disgrace in 2014 that started this thread.

Between him, Fuller and Hicks they have $45M committed for 2019, $50M for 2020 and $54M for 2021. Granted there is a lot of room for cap savings in 2020/21 but that means they aren't producing on the field for you. 25% of your cap rolled up in those three guys.

Not just the money though - you give up 2019 and 2020 first round picks (move up your 2020 third round to second round). That smells a lot like selling your future away, IMO.

Yeah, the Bears still kind of lack talent for a team selling the future for the present. If the answer at QB isn't Trubisky they are probably looking at another half decade outside the playoff hunt.

This is the crux. If Trubisky pans out, this trade will be fine. The second first round pick is what bothered me, but getting back a 2nd from the Raiders is fine enough with me. Just means I don't need to bother watching the first round for the next couple years.

If the answer is Trubiscuit they will have half their 2022 salary cap tied up b/w him and Mack to keep him around. Hell if Allen Robinson is demanding $42M over 3 years they will have to draft some skill players b/c they sure as hell won't be able to afford to rent them. Jordan Howard types at under $750k/year is hard to bank on - he pretty much has to get cut loose after 2019 and "make" another guy like him with a 4th or 5th round pick.
