This was going to happen eventually, I was saying it weeks ago when Riddiculous said "I hope BVG stays forever." Eventually some OC was going to find a way to exploit BVG and our defense. It's only a matter of time as film amasses and a few guys get injured. I hope BVG can keep an edge next week against FSU, but North Carolina just gave the Criminoles a blueprint on how to attack us. Glad our offense was able to bail us out...great game by Folston despite some really horrible blocking from the OL at times.

The jinx lives on.

VanGorder sucks. We will never stop another offense while he is here and I wish I could be Brian Kelly and go back to January and hire Jon Tenuta as DC instead.

He was but with the exception of the 14 point spot we gave them out of the gate his team was outscored the rest of the way 50 to 29 and won by 7.

Sure. That's all true. But that spread with an athletic QB was rough for our defense. I thought Williams was impressive. They'll keep scoring a ton of points this year.

 I still like BVG, not calling him out, I was just trying to get people to pump the breaks a bit. New coordinators seem to get a benefit on the field for the first 5-6 games of a season. Teams that are used to playing each other frequently don't have much game film against a new coordinator, and sometimes it takes time for teams to figure out how to attack you. BVG was riding an awesome wave to start the season, and he certainly caught a lot of teams off guard. From this point on though, I think he's going to have a tougher road ahead. This defense will still be good, but we're going to need more from our offense going forward like we got today. We've got to cut out the turnovers too.

The defense wasnt helped by Golson's turnovers.Take away those points and it wasnt a bad night for the defense.

I have an unwelcome observation: I can't recall an excellent play by Jaylon Smith today. I can recall many super plays on defense, but my retro-vision sees Jaylon trailing plays, taking ineffective angles, being late to the party --- we are dependent upon him and our two corners to stabilize this defense and get the down-and-distance count to a place where BVG can do his trickery.

Also: TONS of bad tackling today. This can't be laid at BVGs feet as we've seen that we're normally a CLIMAX tackling team, and we arrive fast and with violent intentions. The bad tackling plus lack of urgency in getting up and trotting back to the new line of scrimmage so as to be set for the next play gave us a "one step slow" behavior about half the time --- this by the fastest defense that I've seen from ND in years.

Some elements of this team were not ready [quite] to play today.

Yeah. I'm wondering if some folks were sick, or were looking ahead and not interested in playing NC, or something along those lines.

Word.

Buncha idiots like to over-react.

We'll be just fine, I for one am calling an ND victory next week.

So I'm an "idiot" for overreacting to this thread if you read it and then the next week give up 43. Now we are gonna win in Tally against 19-0 Jameis Winston? If we play like we did today I can promise you we will probably get embarrassed.

Hangover game is a hangover game. Take the ugly win and move on. Take nothing else away. The missed tackles, lack of intensity, and sloppy play were an anomaly and is usually what you see immediately following the most physical game of the season. I'm literally not worried at all.

I'm still trying to figure out why guys on here think this was an anomaly. This is the first team we play that actually had an offense and our defense got taken to the woodshed and spanked like a red headed step child. This isn't an "anomaly"...it's what we expect coming into the season. It had just been masked by terrible opponents. What UNC has done is given FSU, ASU, and Louisville a tempo blue print to completely exploit our youth. We shall find out next week if this was the anomaly y'all say it is, or a sign of what to expect from here on out.

I said in the post game thread I think the UNC tempo took BVG out of the game. Our defense might be too complex for a no huddle in its first year of installment. BVG still brought the pressure at times but the playbook and BVG's option's had to be limited. Usually no huddle leads to more default calls, thus BVG's impact which has been outstanding this year was reduced.

That being said this was the first O ND faced that has had their act together. So I am not totally sure what to make of it. Was to a really bad game? Yes I think it was, and those games do happen at times. Was the ND exposed in some respects? I believe so.

I'm just sitting here, drinking my chocolate milk, wondering what it's like to be undefeated.

That kind of attitude my friend makes you a great fan, and would likely make you a terrible coach. Yes the team has issues but seeing how none of us our coaches for the team we probably should sit back and drink our chocolate milk.

HaHa.

I guarantee you if I was paid like they are paid, I would put more effort into it!

It was once a dream that has passed me by.

You mean against the defending champs? Jameis Winston who has won 19 games in a row? We just gave up 40 points to a very average ACC team

And FSU gave up 41 to a very average ACC team.

That's not true. NC State hasn't won a game in the ACC.

Yeah but they're 4-0 non-conference so.....yeah, math.

I mean, NC State navigated a very difficult opening schedule. Ga. Southern, Old Dominion, USF, and Presbyterian.

You have mentioned this all over the place, and yeah, that number is ugly, but unpack it a little. 7 on a pick 6, and 14 on TD drives of 37 yards and 23 yards. It wasn't the best performance but damn it wasn't as bad as you make it seem.

Just watched the replay. No, defense did not play well. And the most glaring scheme weakness is that it's very hard to cue up exotic blitzes when the opponent is running tempo like that. This will be relevant for ASU, and might be relevant for Louisville and USC. I can't really see the other teams running tons of tempo when it's not their normal style. And it also raises a concern of whether uber aggressive defense works if the skill position players are good enough to routinely win their one on one matchups.

While the defense gave up a ton of yards, at the point where we scored 50 UNC had only earned about 20 points worth from their offense... about 2 TDs and 2 FGs if you give them credit for their miss. I find it hard to blame the defense for scores that were gift wrapped by offensive mistakes.

And there are only two offenses left that are better than UNC.

Ya'll let your highs get too high and your lows get too low.

ND loses this type of game in the past. Post-Stanford, sluggish start, start the game down 14-0... And you still get a win, and your extremely young defense PLAYING THEIR SIXTH GAME under a new d-coordinator is still lining up and playing aggressive, despite tempo they hadn't seen before, and they still made enough plays late when UNC had chances to get ahead.

One bad game doesn't justify the general testiness on this board lol.
