Even Faust would have exceeded those win totals, given time. Not saying BK is Faust by any stretch, but they both have the same number of NCs.

So what are saying here phork, Clemson will be a step and a half better than mediocre? Who are the 50 to 60 better teams?

You’re typical over the top hyperbole is as dumb as you knowledge of Faust's ineptitude.

Faust won't have exceeded anything. Newsflash, he was fired for lack of performance. He couldn’t even exceed anything at Akron. In the 4th quarter of one losing ND game, Faust turned to an assistant and exclaimed, “ We need a bomb here! Do we have a bomb play?”

He didn't know what was in his own playbook.

Please read what I wrote. Faust was 30-26-1 in 5 years. If given enough time he would have got 100 wins. Even if it was 20+ years of coaching 5-6 ND teams.
Over the top hyperbole lol.

Are we really comparing Faust to Kelly or vice-versa? If my memory serves me correctly, Faust was hired fresh out of coaching a high school in Ohio. He won multiple championships there and was very successful. His only tie to ND was that he sent several quality players to the program and by all accounts a super guy. I never understood the hire when it happened and I don't compare him in any way to Kelly. Crazy depressing thread.

No we aren't. Read closer.

Anyone who lived (and died) through the Faust debacle would never see any correlation with the CBK era. The guy was clueless, as were those who hired him.
I've said it before, CBK was a pretty good hire given the reality of what the ND program was/is. He has gotten them to a NC game and a 4 team playoff, and has us in a decent position going forward. Still an uphill battle to get to the top, but at least we're on the trail to get there (which we haven't been since early 90's).

I was making no co-relation to BK and Faust. Please read again, quote included to make it easier.

I would say a step above mediocre, haven't really beaten anyone of substance. Clemson loses a ton of talent next year and I expect this game to be very competitive. Again I don't expect to win, their talent still exceeds NDs by a wide margin. But a blowout loss will just add to the Big Game Flop list.

Faust (insert joke here).

Except for you perfectionists who will never be convinced, BK is doing just fine. We're knocking on the door. If we keep knocking, it will eventually be answered.

We are a top team in the 2nd tier, right now. We've consistently hung around in the top 10 in the last three years. That's not mediocre and it's not a step above mediocre. We are a great team. We are not an elite team, yet.

I won't argue with anyone who says that BK is not the guy to get us there, that could definitely be the case. But we are not mediocre or settling for mediocrity.

Pretty much sums it up.

There are a handful of guys here that will bitch no matter what. BK could win the NC and they will complain he passed too much or he didn’t dominate. Or worse, they will say whoever we beat was having a down year.

Not sure why this thread was bumped but very much disagree on the bolded. Some doors never open unless you have the right key.

The reason Kelly fails to win it all is that he:
1) has yet to have a "championship level" QB
2) he has yet to have a team loaded at all position groups in the same year like an Ohio State

Here are the units I consider "good enough to win a championship" in the latter part of the BK era:
OL (2015, 2017)
TE (most years)
RB (never, but 2015 & 2017 at least had a combo of NFL caliber players)
WR (2015... sorta)
QB (never)
S (2018, 2019)
CB (2018)
LB (2018)
DL (2018, 2019)

I'm a firm believer that you either need a Heisman level QB paired with a "good" defense, or a team that is elite at at least 6 of the other 8 positions group with a "good" QB to have a legitimate shot at a title.

Kelly's "coaching" is not the problem, IMO. It's always been inconsistent recruiting for offense and a lack of production on that side of the ball. The one year we had a "good" QB with an NFL OL, NFL WR, and NFL RB the offense was good enough to compete with anyone. Haven't had that since, and it shows in big games.

I'm very encouraged by this most recent class and what looks to be incoming with Buchner in '21. That's why I think it's totally fruitless to even talk about replacing Kelly unless you're willing to punt on that talent or have some sort of transition plan to a "sure thing".

Also: It is remarkable - for a coach who is generally thought of more as an offensive guy - how good Kelly's defenses have been in the years when he did not have Brian Van Gorder as a defensive coordinator. Diaco's defenses, most years, and the Elko/Lea defenses of the last few have been, by and large, good enough.

Add:

2017 RB's & OL, 2015 WR's, ('10 & '11 too) plus...

Kizer on his better days OR...

Pre-ASU Golson in '14. ASU on... hide the women and children.

to last year and you have a legit contender.

I saw Ryan Day signed a contract extension this week, and details came out about Franklin's at Penn State. Has there been any news/rumors on the BK extension front?

I think he's picking his brain on how to undergo pretty radical changes...but yes. I get the joke.

CBK has made Notre Dame....a bit sexy again. Recruiting sure seems to have changed.

I have a sneaky suspicion that we might be back.

I can just see Herman watching BK from a distance go from 4-8 to 33-6 over the past three seasons with a CFP berth. Then the icing on the cake is the 2021 crootin' class sitting pretty with the likes of Buchner, Fisher, Colzie and Styles Jr. etc.

Picks up his phone: "Hey Bri! Long time no chat. Got a sec?"

I'm failing to see how this is a bad thing, Herman wanting to talk to Kelly about a staff overhaul.

Hopefully they set up another series. Any room on the schedule over next few years?
(edit: wow just looked at 2023. We play Ohio State, USC and Clemson in the first 4 weeks).

So under rona2020 I have been going back and watching all games that are on youtube since 1988. I have a couple thoughts.

1. Rocket is still my favorite Irish player ever. Not only did he have great speed, but was really hard to bring down.

2. In the 1991 Orange bowl against Colorado, there was no clip...anywhere. Irish were robbed in a 10-9 loss. Another awesome return by Rocket.

3. Joe Moore's lines were awesome.

4. The 1993 Florida State game was awesome.

5. Nobody was a better "big game" coach than Coach Holtz.

6. The 2012 defense was so much fun to watch.

7. Coach Kelly is easily the best coach we have had since Lou. The next time somebody wants to post about getting rid of Kelly, go back and watch the Davie, Willingham years before you press Post.

8. I liked the play calling under Kelly better too. We used to run straight ahead instead of this side to side junk. Hopefully we get back to the aggressive playcalling under Tommy.

Been fun to walk down memory lane. Go Irish!
